It seems that you have a different question in mind than the one I actually answered, which is why are people obsessed with the points thing. I thought my answer was pretty obvious and unobjectionable. If you have a different question you'd like to ask, I'd be happy to take a crack at it.

My question was getting at the underlying reason you gave for why the points have any value (which is hilarious, considering I'm an existential nihilist).

Odd. I don't think I suggested an underlying reason the points have value. At best, I suggested that the points could be perceived by a newcomer as a status thing but that I didn't think such impressions of "status" had any real power over one's ability to enjoy the board other than what power the individual gives it. (that was the part about being secure and interested enough to carry on without letting the points affect your contributions)

quote:

Either I'm intentionally trying to garner adulation and, apparently, have succeeding and was reaping benefit from the points thread specifically for that reason: in which case I'm guilty of being successful but having a suspicious motive (like, the universal human desire for reciprocal attention).

This is funny to me. When I wrote of posters appearing credentialed or favored, I was actually thinking of the people who you assigned points to. This would be another way in which our minds work differently... I don't approach all matters thinking "what does this mean to Nihilus Zero?" From my perspective, your going from my comment about forum dynamics to this analysis of whether or not you are, let's go ahead and say it, an attention whore is a pretty big leap. It's not what I was thinking about at all and there's something delicious in how you keep pulling subjects back that way. I don't want to call you an attention whore NZ, you just keep pulling me back in!

quote:

Or I'm garnering this adulation purely on passive elements that are inherent to my person: in which case I'm guilty of earning the willingly given attention of others honestly and the thread is just a fun game like any of the hundreds of others. Like that FelineFae chick! Where she claims to be the keeper of the "win" in that 'last person to post' thread. Devious chick. It must be us felines.

As usual, I can't agree with your either/or framing. But I am curious why you feel the need to have these musings in response to me after I wrote this:

I now realize the points have fairly innocent origins and the whole enterprise is meant to be good fun.

quote:

I digress, however. My question or curious musing, however, is whether any accusations of doing anything for ego/arrogance purposes online actually have any logical merit based on what the person is doing, or whether it all invariably comes down to personal interpretations of actions that, oddly, have to be successful in order to garner the suspicion.

That is a messy and tedious question. Short answer: yes, an accusation of doing something for ego purposes online can have actual logical merit based on what the person is doing.

I was referring to your comment where you said:

I don't know that people are obsessed. He has a strong presence on the forum, so it's not surprising that people paying attention to forum dynamics would pay attention to him.

And was actually curious what the mechanisms behind being presumed to have a "strong presence" are. I was actually speaking objectively, about anyone, potentially.

This is a bit of a disingenuous angle to take. It's obvious that the brunt of the recent pages here are specifically to do with me (I asked for none of the attention, mind you; plus, your quoted excerpt above specifically related to me). If I was asking a question that reflected the view of someone in my position, it's not a non sequitur. It would make sense. It's how people normally respond. As I mentioned above, though, I was asking about how the dynamics happen, irrelevant of who they are related to.

I'm not interested in making this about me and genuinely thought you were approaching the discussion with an honest tone. If, however, due to our previous clashes in the past you're still walking into this with the intent of posing questions/comments that invariably lead to a point where you can make the subtle suggestion that this, too, is for attention-whoring purposes, then at least please be honest about it so I will know not to give you the benefit of the doubt that you aren't just baiting me because you continue to think I'm "full of shit".

Because it appears I was under the mistaken impression that you understood I was not defensively arguing or heckling you for the sake of it, but actually interested in discussing the cogwork of the phenomenon with someone who appeared to be offering a sincere angle into that part of the topic.

Gotcha. I'll leave it at that.

Edit. Oops. My mistake.

I suppose my error in presuming the last poster was talking about me when she clearly was replying to the OP is just another testament to my self-centeredness.

Ugh.  I feel a bit responsible for starting this train rolling downhill.

She's a brand new poster, responding to the OP.  She wasn't getting in your face, NZ.  Please be nice.

And, Scheherazade67?  I liked your post.  I hereby award you 25 KittinSol points.  You'll have to ask her what they're good for; I can only dreammmmmmmmm.

I just noticed. I didn't write anything bad.

And I've changed my reply to reflect the fact that I realized she was replying to the OP.

Apologies, Scheherazade, if my error upset you at all.

I'd be tempted to offer you points for a cool name, but...

Overly dramatic, much?

0 NZ points.

Oh come on, sexyred.  The very existence of "NZ points" is proof of the cliquish nature of message boards.  Back when he first started handing them out, he gave me 100 (mostly due to a post I made he thought was worth 80), but I never acknowledged receipt of them, and he hasn't awarded me any for a long time.  (I prefer it that way, in case anyone is interested.)  It's a way of demonstrating status within a particular group, by playing a particular social game.  I didn't play the game, so I stopped getting points.  (Again, I prefer it that way -- for the same reason I don't have friends on my profile.  I want my words to be judged on their own, and by me alone, not by who I happen to be buddies with.)

To people uncomfortable about expressing themselves, these social circles can seem imposing.  It helps to remember that this is JUST THE INTERNET.  This relates directly to the OP as well.  Not enough responses, or not enough polite responses?  Don't sweat it too much.  This is only online.  It's not as though someone you know in real life just blew you off.

Ok come on Red & red... seriously?!? I love the cute NZ points. You guys are making more of this than needs to be. I'm sure this whole thing started because NZ is so warm and approachable and people appreciated his approval. :)

As for cliques, they will often form in groups. The more diverse and larger the group, the more there will be chances of cliques. They are inherently subgroups gone a little wrong...

Subgroups are natural occurencess within groups and as a person who has been studying group and community dynamics academically for over 7 years, it's not always a bad thing. It permits microdiscussions within a larger setting.

The danger is when we start seeing those subgroups as "cliques". I refuse to see it that way. I tend to try to ignore alliances that have been developed here and get along with those who show me respect.

I got my first NZ points the other day. I actually emailed him jokingly and told him I thought I deserved them! The nerve of me!! ;-) I think NZ is a brilliant individual, as brilliant as the 2 of you. And believe it or not, you all have more in common than you think. Sensibilities, open minds, acceptance of others and then some. Oh yeah, and you are all admired by me. Come on! Am I going to need to start giving out LA Seals of Approval ;-)

Honest. It's time to move beyond all this and see each other as a community and see our similiarities rather than cliques.

Agreed? Oh, so the NZ points are immature but you and Jeff derailing threads with your Ward and June jokes aren't?

I actually don't mind any of it to be honest. :) I think it all brings us closer together and creates a bond.

I am okay with that. Seriously.

Some people I do not WANT to be closer to, bonded with. I accept that there are people that feel the same way about me.

Well I'm not over it. I came home from work early with a head cold and am waiting for this %#$!@ sinus medication to take effect. I hate taking drugs :-(

But when I see a whole bunch of people I admire bickering over small things, it makes me sad. Come on... all of you... stop bickering and tend to a sick Dommie :)

DG points are all of the rage of the kids today.

NZ points went out with collecting pokemon cards.

I didn't have time to read this thread but I am fairly confident that I would have reached the just conclusion that the majority of the people that have participated in it are rather cunty.

Although bitchy will do in a pinch.
