KatyLied -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/9/2005 7:57:12 AM)

Thank you to everyone who responded with offers and ideas.

Drink a lot of really good coffee. That tends to not necessarily motivate me, but it does make it essential that I'm moving around, which usually achieves the same result. If all else fails, stop cleaning, throw confetti all over the house and claim you're having a "bohemian" holiday this year.

girl4you2 -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/9/2005 11:22:59 PM)

you've got snow!!! that is super motivation enough! well, it would be for me, but i don't usually see it. i heard they had school "snow days" today in the northeast. time for cocoa and decorating! let the munchkins do it!

i finally started doing it today myself; i'm a bit behind as well. not a motivated year. i wish you well with it.

KatyLied -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 5:20:33 AM)

Hey Girl4you2....we had a few closures, mainly 2 hour delays in my geography. Friday night is a big high school basketball night, and if the school has complete closure - no basketball games.

girl4you2 -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 6:22:20 AM)

it looked really bad and cold on the news. they had plows in the middle of major streets in nyc and also in front of the white house. someone said it's expected to be the coldest winter of the last 5 years. brrrrrrrr. have cocoa? if not, we'll have to gather up a care package to send out!

KatyLied -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 6:27:20 AM)

Yep, it's definitely brrr here. Lots of pretty snow. But we received about 5 inches of it (not the 10 as expected), others got pounded much worse.

As far as cocoa....I'd rather have hot chocolate milk, with tons of mini marshmallows. [;)]

MHOO314 -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 6:38:51 AM)

ok KatyLied---its time to face the music, we rushed to your side with hot cocoa, martinis, cherry bombs, chocolate, and friendship---have you started getting ready for the holiday? smiles

KatyLied -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 7:02:26 AM)

What's really bad here...no, I've done nothing.
But I've had thoughts. About decorating and wrapping gifts and doing more shopping.
I think I will tackle it this afternoon.

And you've all been very cool to me!

MizSuz -> RE: Xmas....Motivate Me! (12/10/2005 7:07:18 AM)

What??? You're not in the mood for an entire month (or more) of Merry Crass Commercialism followed by three months of indenture all for the joy of stressing so hard that when you do get with the people you love it's no fun?

I say "lets go skiing instead."

Well, I've never put on a pair of skis, so if nothing else, it would be quite amusing.
And the ski lodge, I can go there and drink, yes?

Oh YESSSSSS. And sit by a toasty fire. Or find an outdoor hot tub and sit in it in the evening when the snow is slowly falling in big fat flakes and the clouds occasionally open up to let the stars peek through.

I'm all for spending my money on some mom & pop b&b or cabin rental, spending the time with just a few close friends and enjoying each other. Fuck all that shopping and baking and cleaning and debt crap.

The best christmas I ever had - we (immediate family) decided to only get ONE present each. There was three of us so there was a total of three presents purchased - that's IT (it also required collaboration by the two buying for the one which was nice). We went to a wonderful restaurant for dinner (waiters in tux, cloth napkins, real silver ware, etc.) and refused to go and visit anyone. They were all told if they wanted to see us they were welcome to come and visit. The tree was a potted Norfolk pine that lived more than a decade after (and looked like a charlie brown tree with one small strand of lights on it that christmas). We woke up and had a nice breakfast, exchanged presents and walked the beach collecting shells. We went to an early dinner and came home and read and played video games together. My son was about 12 at that time and even he will tell you it was the best christmas we ever had. Writing the rent check on January 1 was actually a pleasure that year and we were able to carry the glow of love and togetherness into the next year seamlessly.

That was all the proof I needed that 'traditional' christmas as north america has come to see it is not for me. I opted out from then on and have never regretted it. My son will be 27 this month - so it's been working for me for 15 years.

Oh, MizSuz, I loved your last post! It reminds me of the Christmas we had when I was 15....Dad wasn't working and we were broke. So we all agreed that we had to make presents for each other, and also, the tree ornaments had to be handmade. Even though they were tin foil stars and paper chains, it was beautiful! I have always called it our best Christmas, even though the other years were much more prosperous.

I'm 47 now, and Dad is gone, but I still have the set of bookshelves he made me. It's one of my prize possessions.

Liz was going through a little xmas depression since this is her first one away from her family. So we went about getting the place all done up and to add a little bit of a kink touch to it, we found a reaf for the front door with santa sitting in it, and above the words "Ho Ho Ho" above it. Liz took an old barbie doll, sluttied it up in a pleather mini skirt and such, and hot glued her in Santa's Lap. Its definately a lot like Christmas around here [:)]

What a FABULOUS story! Thank you so much for sharing. I think abandoning the commercial and societal expectations we've allowed to be foisted upon us and reconnecting with what the holiday really means to us in personal ways is the only way to enjoy a holiday.

That's why I like easter the most. Whether you are a christian or not, the notion of resurrection - of the continuation of life and of transcending 'ends' - is very affirming for me. It's no surprise that it happens in spring, the season of rebirth. But I don't go to church or decorate or do eggs or do anything other than share a meal with folks I care for (if that). It's all an internal thing for me and is by far my favorite holiday time. Then I take my revitalized energy and positive outlook and try to share that with the world.

Besides, I hate to shop (she said as she logged out and went shopping for a snow blower).
