Evility -> RE: Practicing what we preach (10/13/2008 7:43:22 AM)

I follow my own advice but I limit advice on such matters to "use your own common sense". That is what I do and that is what I think everyone should do. I have broken all the standard rules and lived to tell about it just as you have. So yes, I do follow my own advice - it just doesn't mirror the advice given by 95% of the rest of the crowd.

I do but then I give advice that many dont agree with, I dont avise people to wait to meet or to play. In fact the advice I give isnt ever really advice more just a simple discription of what I have done in similar situations.

JewAndCelt -> RE: Practicing what we preach (10/13/2008 11:26:29 AM)

I simply try not to give advice. After all, it's free - and you oftentimes get what you pay for.

What might be beneficial for me and mine might be harmful to another.

For those looking for advice, all I can tell them is to learn and study - not all knowledge can be put to a screen or on paper. It's what I've done for the most part, after discarding roughly half of what I've been told throughout the years.

How can anyone be truthful, honest, sincere if what they say is not what they do.

No.... the advice I give comes from my experience, heart and mind...if I didnt follow my own advice or be able to stand by my opinion...I'd be a number one friggin hypocrite.

Edited to add: Speaking of common sense....  I get irritated when people dont use it and come to places like this and
ask questions that are rather benignly silly or stupid and I wonder how these people make decisions as adults.

IvyMorgan -> RE: Practicing what we preach (10/13/2008 2:59:39 PM)

The first thing I learnt counselling was not to give advice.  It's something I try to stick with, all the time.  I'll offer suggestions, ask questions, but won't say "why don't you do X" or "I think Y is a good idea" etc.

Do I always do what I think is sensible, no.  Life would be no fun if I played it safe all the time.

Yep, because I don't give the advice unless I have found it to be useful for myself.  Most often what I post isn't advice in the sense of "you should do this or shouldn't do that".  Most of what I post is "I did X when I was in a similar situation." or "this is what has worked for me".  The the person can decide whether they find anything useful in what I have said or not.

There are many here who give good, sound advice but i have to wonder........... how many people actually take their own advice?

What do you think I am nuts???  I don't have that high of an opinion on my advice.  I approach it like my cooking... get someone to try it... if they live.. that I will eat it too  *w*

Yes and no!

Yes, because I have a strong sense of integrity that drives me to live by and put into practice everything I say on these boards.

No, because I am still learning and growing and sometimes do things or make decisions that later in reflection I then realized were wrong or contrary to my own ideas and principles.

Yep, me too. I try to follow my own advice.  I imagine my best friend in the same situation and think of what I would advise her to do in that situation.  Not always the easiest thing to do because, well, she's not me and wouldn't be in the same situations, but I do the best I can.

stella41b -> RE: Practicing what we preach (10/13/2008 7:26:14 PM)

Being somewhat artistic with a feline nature tends to preclude any opportunity I have of taking my own advice. I follow my instincts, hunches and generally just make it up as I go along.

I can give advice, share an experience, give an insight, make a suggestion or even pull your leg - you have to work it out for yourself.

Someone asking how long they should wait before meeting someone from cm. I would advise getting to know them as best as they can before jumping into a meet. Do i follow that advice? Hell no.
Someone asking about play on a first date. I would advise not playing on a first date. Do i follow that advice? Hell no again.

I take my advice a lot! [:D]

In fact, I am very selective about whom I ask and take advice, FROM.
I often don't  take advice from people who I don't feel are credible to GIVE me advice.
It is like the poor person telling me how to be rich, or the fat person trying to tell me how to be
thin, etc. sort of thing.

I often tell people to not be so hard on themselves, and
to try to go with the flow!

I try not to be so hard on myself.
The way I feel it, if you are on your side and I am on your side, who
the hell is on my side?
I am always on my side.
[:D]
Live and let live.
To each his/her own.

I really try to live this way.

WhiplashSmile2 -> RE: Practicing what we preach (10/13/2008 8:36:45 PM)

I've been using this message board for around two years now.  There has been some really great advice posted on here from other users.  A lot of great insight and different perspectives.  Like anything else in life, there are Pro's and Con's to everything though.

One piece of advice I have often tossed out at people to remember that first and foremost that we are human beings, and not to fall into the trappings of stereotype labels and mindsets.

Now dare I express this, I find at the moment, I myself need to follow my own device.
