To help them heal quickly, take some plain baking soda. Wet your fingertip and press it into the baking soda so that you get a decent amount, and then press that onto the sore spot. Let it sit about 30 seconds without letting the powder touch the rest of the inside of the mouth. It helps to hold the mouth open and press the tip of the tongue behind the front teeth, to cut down on salivation. This lets the sore dry out a little. Then spit and swish until the powder is gone. It will taste quite salty; try not to swallow any. This works especially well on the nasty persistent ones that won't seem to go away, especially on the almost-unreachable places on the back of the tongue or the roof of the mouth. Common causes are anything from a mild abrasion or cut on the inside of the mouth to a burn, whether caused by temperature or acidity. A particularly sharp potato chip can do it, for example, or biting one's tongue.
