Are you talking about antihistamines?  Have you tried Zrytec (available in generic)?  I find it to be so sedating that I can only take half a dose.

Only side effect i had after taking predinosone was severe gastritis that almost landed me in the hospital (thought it was a heart attack).  No personality changes and i am an insomniac anyway.

Aileen, if he ever goes on it again, would you please send him down to my house? I'll be happy to take him over for a few days; my garage is in a terrible mess! :)

Beware of using repeated doses of Prednisone.  There are a number of long term effects that are not all that pleasant.

Prednisone is a "magic" pill but requires caution when to use (but conversely should not be with held if needed).

Hi all and thanks for all the advice.

I have been off the Pred since friday and the swelling in my face has almost completly gone. Also last night I slept which has made me feel so much better I was starting to go up the wall.

The strange mental state wasnt the antihistimines as i noticed it on thursday (well rather my friend did when we were conversing online and i got it into my head someone else was there reading the convo and laughing at me) and pointed out that that sort of thinking was very unlike me. The thinking got worse pretty quick and friday afternoon i thought i was going nuts and so just planted myself on the sofa and stayed away from everything as the thoughts were running down the self loathing/self harm route so I decided that I knew it was the meds but didnt want to put myself in any potentially bad situations.

My head is now back to its normal state pretty much, no crazy thoughts or anything like that, my chest is still painfull but the horrible cough is now at least productive and i feel far more like a functioning human being.

I can see how bad it could be if someone reacted to the drugs as badly as I did and didnt realise something was wrong. I was almost watching myself having nuts thoughts from the outside and was so able to keep a grip on myself and NOT do anything bad or stupid but if I hadnt realised that it was something else producing those thoughts then I could have acted on them which is a scary thought.

My Fiance didnt end up coming home friday as he wasnt well himself but my friend in the states basically spent approx 8 hours on the phone to me on and off over the course of friday evening/night till my fiance showed up about 9 am yesterday.

I'm just so glad to be feeling better - weirdly enough i have NO energy now though i did when actually taking the steroids but i really dont care, I'm just glad to no longer feel like insanity has taken over my brain. I am never never taking that drug again. I am glad that it was pointed out it wasnt a normal reaction and that i sought for help because part of me was saying that i was being silly and best just to take the meds perscribed.

i am sure  Master would not mind His slave sharing this.  i had the exact meds given to me and more.  Yes, i had moon face before and it too can give you double chin and YES i am going though it now (as of today my last dose) i was on the ones that Your start with 6 a day and a shot and then slowly down to one, i take the last one tonight (thank goodness) ... it takes 1-2 months at most to get to normal.  lucky for me not too bad this time.  Goodluck. lass {S.L.}

Part of the crazy thoughts could also have been lack of sleep. When someone doesnt get enough REM sleep, they do start getting a little crazy. The one and only time I was on prednisone, I didnt sleep for 3 days. At all, Id lay down, give up and find something to keep busy. By the end of it I was hallucinating cross hairs when we played pool.
I also got all puffed up, my face and my hands so bad I couldnt even make a fist. The doctor thought it might have been an allergic reaction, but I have never touched it again since.
I am glad you are back to normal... drug stuff is scary ground

Yes, steroids like prednisolone will cause puffing of the face, hands, feet, and the back of the neck (what my mom used to call a 'dowager's hump'). Fortunately, when you come off of them, the puffiness goes away. For people who take corticosteroids on a regular basis (like me -- I take it for my MS and a congenital immune-system problem), there can be long-term weight gain that doesn't go away, but that is rarely an issue for short-term use in dealing with acute inflammation.

I have a love-hate relationship with Prednisone.

On one hand, in high doses, it DOES stop my hives for 24 hours (though as soon as that's up I get more).

On the other hand, last time I took it for an extended period (about 5 weeks on decreasing dosages every five days starting at 50mg) it caused...

insomnia
weight gain (20lbs!)
bloating
racing thoughts
extreme mood swings (added to my own mood swings already. It made my psychiatric medication completely ineffective)

and other random problems. I'm already pretty flushed, and have a chubby face so didn't get 'moon face' but I do NOT like being on it. I may have to go on it again, and soon, though. :(

I am also a lifelong asthma sufferer and have had many instances where I've had to take prolonged steroids to help treat this condition when it's been at its worst. The 'moon face' is associated with long-term usage, not short-term, it really does take time for this to take effect and what the OP describes is a classic allergic reaction to her medication, although having said that, when I am in hyper-allergy mode I tend to react to food items that I wouldn't normarily react to - onions, for instance. Prednisone weakens a person's general immune system.

As for the personality alterations, this can also happen with this medication (it is well documented if you search the internet), along with confusion due to it causing low potassium. My own skin is very thin in places (legs and face, for instance) due to prolonged steroid use.

The BEST thing I possibly did regarding this drug was THROW IT AWAY and allow my body's immune system to recover.

Glad  amaidiamond is feeling better.

lifelong asthma and chronic bronchitis has found me on many bouts of prednisone.. some lasting for as long as 6 mos at 80mgs/day.. ive never had the big amount of swelling that you did but yeah my face took on a much rounder shape than it had previously (although it took about 2 wks to develop).. i tend to gain wt. like crazy on the stuff, eat like mad and lose sleep which makes me very edgy... but the good news is, the stuff works and does what its supposed to do.. my main problem with it is that when i get done with course of treatment every joint in my body aches for about 3 days.. apparently this is a side effect after longer term usage, but i cant stand it.. definately not a good pain

Most of the side effects will disappear once you are off the steroid..HOWEVER...that Greenbay Packer Appetite will put weight on faster than you think possible. Suggestion..look around for Dreamfields Pasta http://www.dreamfieldsfoods.com/ can tell you what stores in your area carry it. 5 grams of usable carbs per 1/2 cup serving..it will satisfy the gotta eat cravings without packing on too many pounds. This stuff is great for anyone who goes through Prednisone regimen from time to time like I do for the asthma, especially since the steroids raise my blood sugars WITHOUT food getting in the act..

*moon face* is a common side effect of the sterioid which i think i can handle but what i cant find out is how long it lasts, the websites say the drug causes fat to redistribute - I'm so afraid it won't redistribute back and I'll look like this always - the rest of me is normal but my face looks like it belongs to someone else.

Also i got 2 hours sleep last night  - couldnt get anymore just tossing and turning.

Both problems are totally normal, trust me, i know. I've been living on steroids for almost a year now due to the RA.

When i was in the hospital over the summer for three days i was temporarily off of them. Guess what i lost 63 pounds in those few day. Went back to almost normal size.

The sleeping thing, take your pills early in the morning to avoid this. And this effect does eventually wear off.

Good luck, get well and my sympathy hon.

I just finished my third course (over 6 weeks total) for asthmatic bronchitis.

The moodiness nearly drives me bonkers and the spikes in sugar are disconcerting ( I am diabetic to start with) but the side effect that bothers me the most is it changes my vision.
What happens is that it changes the amount of fluid in the lenses of my eyes thereby completely changing my refraction...I can't get a new pair of glasses to fix it because there is no telling that it will be the same tomorrow or even in a few hours... grrrr!
So instead I wait till I am off them.

I have to keep reminding myself "Breathing is good!".

What I recall from being on prednisone:  eating constantly, not sleeping except for maybe 3 hours a night, being hyper as hell and having a red face and neck, I was in a constant flushed state.  It looked like I'd just had an orgasm.

That was me on the stuff.

*ugh*

I ate and ate and ate.. looked like I was a damn puffer fish.

I hated it.

That stinks :( I was on prednisone a lot last summer and I gained 50 lbs. I'm still trying to drop that weight. It also made me so mean and hateful, I would snap at the tiniest things and then lock myself in my bedroom and cry. Steroids are a tough one as far as side effects. I may be wrong, but I believe that local steroids, like the ones in inhalers don't have those type of side effects. They are intended for daily long-term use, though. Good luck!

The inhaled steroids are almost worse, for me... just on a shorter term (I have acute asthma attacks that need surveillance). I practically get severe ADHD and cycle like it's nobody's business. My one friend joked that I was practically pregnant on the stuff because I'd be screaming angry then crying from depression in the span of ten seconds (over the fact that I got a crumb on the floor, no less).

Those effects last for a few hours, at least, sometimes as long as an entire (waking) day and make it hard to sleep.

During winter I usually have to use it once a week at least. It's "fun" being completely unapproachable.

Sir had to go to hospital yesterday in an ambulance because He was having trouble breathing.  He has a chest infection with the bronchospasm (sp) which they are treating with ventolin in a nebuliser and also this drug.  They gave Him 50mg in the emergency room and two hours later His BSL was 25.9mmol/l (which is very high).  He refused the second dose this morning because it was STILL HIGH (over 32mmol/l).  They had to keep giving Him insulin and finally got it down late this afternoon.

He's going to try a reduced dose (20mg) and see what happens....they are keeping Him in for a few days while they try and get Him stable.
Hopefully now this will be the catalyst to get Him to stop smoking...He hasn't had any cigarettes for nearly a week and hoping He won't start again (is it very naughty of me to hide Sir's cigarettes??  )
