Ginger loves to lick my blankets and sheets and she'll do so till there's a huge wet spot, and it drives me batty. And no she's not licking at a sex cum stain, or anything particular, the sheets and blankets are clean.

Okay, this is soooooooo not what I thought it would be about.

Long, long ago and far away, back when I had a dog, my vet told me that the activity you're describing is most often a reaction to being bored or being anxious.  I don't know if that is still the current thinking.

I figured maybe she liked the taste or texture of what she was licking.

Now you're making me stretch way deep into those seldom-used memory cells of my brain.  I think if it's a taste issue, the dog licks AND tries to chew.  If it's an anxiety/stress issue, it's just licking.  But I'm not positive.

More signs of stress/anxiety, but can also be because it's become a habit.  Talk to your vet or google the words DOG, STRESS, LICKING and you'll see what I mean.

In cats they call it "wool sucking" even though the fabric may not be wool.  If it is done in excess it is most likely a reaction to stress.  I saw a show on it on the Animal Channel, and they said to distract the animal from doing it by playing a game with them (like chasing a toy) or making sure that there are plenty of things around for them to play with.

In the case of my kitten, he was fully weaned when I got him but within about three weeks he started nursing at my neck.  (Still called wool sucking.)  The vet couldn't stop laughing when I told him I had to get up in the middle of the night and put a scarf around my neck to get back to sleep because I couldn't get the kitten to stop.  (Punishment is never suggested.)  Three months later my kitten still does the "nursey thing", as I've come to call it, at least once a day but now it is normally just a few licks and less than a minute of sucking.  He tends to do it most intensely if I have had to leave him alone for more than 8 hours.  The vet told me that he simply sees me as his mother and it is his way of being comforted.

My dog liked to lick other dogs ears. My daughters poor cocker's ears would be dripping wet.

When we were at a shelter looking to adopt a cat, there was an adult tabby there who was OBSESSED with ears. There was a note on her cage about it, and while we were there two different volunteers who were working there asked to make sure we'd seen her "perform". The second you took her out of the cage, she was climbing up your shirt like crazy to start licking at your earlobe. Male, female, earrings, no earrings, didn't matter. It was freaky.

One of my kitties is a huge licker; she licks herself, others, inanimate objects.  She's grooming right next to me right now.  I think she does it as a matter of comfort and sometimes, I suspect, she was weaned too early.
I understand the person who said she needs to put a scarf around her neck at night.  Sometimes I have tohide, head andall, under sheets to evade the licking.
They all have their interesting personality traits, don't they?!  :>
