Soyokaze -> residuel effects of pneumonia? (10/31/2008 9:56:13 AM)

I had pneumonia almost two years ago.  Haven't really been exposed to cold since then.  Lately, I ride my bike to work and it has been getting cold.  For a few hours after I finish riding, I have a slight pain in my chest and it's just a little hard to breath.  It reminds me of when I had pneumonia (nowhere near as bad obviously).  Is it possibly just mental because of the cold weather(I got sick just after being overexposed to the cold)?  Or is it more likely I have some damage to my lungs or am I getting sick with something : (

Have you made an appt to see a doctor?

No, it's only slightly annoying right now, and doesn't really bother me.  If it gets even a little worse though I'm going to.

I know personally if i do any walking when the weather is cold it affects my chest. Makes it feel kind of burning down my throat. I have asthma though so this is probably why. Have mentioned it to the doctor but she didnt seem to bothered. Currently suffering from acute bronchitis. I cant see that there should be any long term affect from pneumonia. But it is always worth talking to your doctor about it if you are worried.

talk to the doctor, breathing is nothing to mess with, it's kinda essential!  best to nip whatever in the bud before it gets out of hand and becomes debilitating.  we have 3 athsmatics in the house, we kinda get antsy if someone has a problem with breathing.

don't put off and get to your doctor asap  ....one on the affects of pneumonia can be heart problems  a condition called supraventricular tachycardia    or SVThttp://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/tc/supraventricular-tachycardia-overview
. symptoms can include chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness , sweating , fast heart beat .....which is what I am currently dealing with  and like you I kept putting off a visit to the doctor thinking the symptoms was no big deal for 9 months and was lucky I did not die from  .. I have just spending 4 days in and out of hospital  with episodes  this past week   with all sorts of testing going on trying the find out  the cause and to determine if there is structural damage to the heart itself..... and my chest x ray does show a mass/shadow in the right lung which they are hoping is pneumonia   even though I am not sick from could be walking pneumonia  and not cancer but it also could have originate from a flu I had a few years ago that I complications from ..normally this condition affects people between ages 20 to 30  so  you are also in the right age range

It sounds like asthma.  A variety of things can trigger an asthma attack  (difficulty breathing, and an aching chest, an overall feeling of tightness in your torso), cold can be one of these things.  If it is asthma you may be able to remedy these effects by pre-medicating with an inhaler before you start your bike ride.

It could also be pleurisy which feels similar to the description given.

OP go see a doctor is the best advice.

I would suggest a pulmonologist, especially considering that the OP has had pneumonia.

Once you have pneumonia or any other major lung issue, it leaves scarr tissue.  Cold air (any air if clean) is good for ya, it only hurts when your body tries to warm it or if the cold air hits a scarred area.

Get a chest x-ray.

Allergies can do the same.  Indoor or out.  Did you change office buildings, get a new carpet, pet, sweater, even change teas? Do you buy non-organic (god knows what dirty farm/factory/chemicals added place came from) meats? Have you ever been tested for TB?

Could be many various things, but at all costs do avoid babying it too much by stopping all cardio/lung excercize. A stretched lung is a happy, healthy lung.

I supose I'll have to get it checked out : (  My enviroment hasn't changed except the temperatures in the morning getting cold enough for frost on the ground, and I've been tested for TB numerous times including pretty recently.  I haven't let it stop me from exercising regularly : )

DesFIP -> RE: residuel effects of pneumonia? (11/2/2008 8:29:21 PM)

Did it happen when you rode while the weather was warmer? Is it only in cold weather? Because I think you could find a scarf like item that pulls up over the nose/mouth and allows the incoming air to be warmed. If you try that, and that helps then I'd assume you have developed a form of exercise induced asthma, one that is triggered by cold air. But I would get it checked out, just in case.

If it is asthma, please DO NOT use Primatene Mist Inhalor which is sold over the counter.  That spray is really harsh & will cause more damage than good.

I was writing under the assumption that she would seek medical attention to diagnose the condition.  Also, I'm talking about albuterol, which should be used per doc's instructions, and which is often prescribed not only to combat symptoms but as a pre-medication when the patient knows they will be in triggering situations.

Sounds like reactive airway disease - one version of which is asthma - and cold air could irritate the aveoli of your lungs, causing strictures - hence the shortness of breath and tightness in your chest.

Its not exactly a big deal - but you need to see your doctor, get it diagnosed and get it treated. You'll be a lot more comfortable knowing what is going on. [:)]

and i'm not a doctor - but i slept in a holiday inn select last night [:D]
