CollaredChicklet -> scars.... :( ? (11/1/2008 9:45:34 PM)

a couple of years ago, I had an allergic reaction which resulted in sores and bumps all over my body..  Most of them went away on their own, but it took a long while for them to clear up.  now, two years later, I am left with scars over the parts of my body that didn't heal well, like the outsides of my hips and my back.  they're slowly going away, I just feel really self-conscious about them...  Does anyone know anything to help with scars, or should I let it run its course and hope they will fade?   I have light olive-colored skin, so any kind of cut will cause a scar.   any help would be greatly appreciated!

Pure vitamin E oil.  Put in on every day, at least once a day for as long as it takes.  It's kind of sticky, so you might want to just do it at bedtime.  You can put something over it like band aids, or gauze or something to keep it off your clothes etc.  It works really well.

May want to see if any cosmetic laser treatments are available.
Best wishes,

I agree.  After my hip surgery i used Vit. E for several months and a year later the 8" scar hardly shows.

I think it depends on what sort of scarring is involved, how long it's been forming, the skin of the individual, etc.

What can you do?  Well, I think a trip to the dermatologist will pretty much lay out your options.  Apparently at least with some types of scarring, quite a bit can be done and costs have been falling.

But until it is done, I'd urge you to treat the scarring as anyone else should a body image problem of any sort.  Those scars are not -- I repeat, not -- detracting from your attractiveness to others, but a poor body image might.

I'm very sorry you were so ill; I hope whatever it was is fully resolved and never comes back.

Vitamin E helped my imp after his chicken pox.  Here's a link from WebMD.  Hope it helps.  http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/guide/scars

Vit E or if you can purchase it, BioOil.  It rocks.

thanks you guys, for all of the help!  I'm definitely going to try the oil, and/or possibly the mederma.   Hopefully it will help!   I do have to say, I am still working on the body consciousness thing...  But it IS getting bette,r, and I have a wonderful Dom who is patient when he needs to be, and accepting of things I cannot change.    Hopefully this will help!   and again, thanks!

I have the olive skin that scars really easily as well.  For years as a teenager I had acne that was resistant to everything the dermatologist could throw at it.  My face ended up being so scarred that you couldn't even quite tell they actually used to be scars. I'll never forget my one friend going "what do you mean you don't have freckles?"

Like others mentioned, vitamin E can really help.  If you look on the bottle of mederma, its basicly all onion extract, a type of glyoxylic acid, sorbic acid, and Methylparaben an antibacterial agent.  A lot of the scar stuff contains some kind of acid, it helps soften and remove the skin gently... with the idea that eventually you'll remove the darkened skin that makes up the scar.

I've had a lot of serious results on my face and other areas just by exfoliating.  I've had some bouts with acne again, but for a few years I had actually managed to remove 99% of the scars on my face in about 3 months, just from exfoliating every day. I have a soft bristle face brush that I use (I love it because it cleans out the pores, but it also helps by exfoliating every time you use it.)  Before you try something like mederma, I would try using some vitamin E, and some exfoliating (how much would depend on how much your skin can handle.  (I don't know how big your spots are, but you could use a loofa, a comerical scrub, or a homemade scrub using sugar or salt.  )
