I think it'd be neat to learn to blow glass, I've also been told that you can go to college and do things to do with arts and stuff, liberal arts, maybe get a degree in that, as i do no have plans for a carrer like a doctor or a vet tech oranything techincally way high up there, that demands a colledge degree and there for see no need for college. I do however think maybe it'd be fun to get a job where my focus was on teaching arts and crafts, not a school teacher but maybe an enrichment assistant at an adult group home, or at a day care or something.

I see the ARC website says you have to take placement tests, and other tests to see if you'll fit in well enough to go to their college, and what if you test so poorly they say you're to stupid to go? I mean I know they wouldn't use the word stupid, but still, what if you don;t test high enough for placement?

If you wouldn't fit in with one school, they will know where you would do better. I'm not familiar with all of the schools in that system, but there is a spot for someone at any level, somewhere.

I suspect it would be possible...if they test then it is conceivable that somebody might fail the test.

They have night time adult education classes that are not for college credit and there just for adults to learn anything from ballrroom dancing, to skydiving to yoga to glassblowing.

Also you can try a 2 year college. there is no placement test.

i also.. would love to learn to blow glass..
and it kinda sucks.. but most of the time when you go to college, you cant pick and choose fun classes like that, noooooo.. they expect you to take placement tests.. and then stick ya into classes that you have no interest in studying further.. like Alegebra.. english...

It would be nice to walk into a college and say... "Hi!... i'd like to learn to blow glass, take a photography class, and chef cooking classes. but no they decide that there is a basic part you work through, BEFORE you get to take the fun courses.

Thing is.. i have been thinking... lately...that i might start college, and will have to deal with the required courses first.. but better watch out.. once im done with THAT part... cause i have such a huge list of interests... i'd likely spend many many many years in college..lol

If it's a community college, they'll still take you, but they'll put you in classes to bring you up to par.

I was thinking that too, but apon veiwing all the classes offered at ARC, there wasn't one class in the whole catalog that would interest me, so I'm kind of again thinking what the hells the point.

I agree that it doesn't make sense to have to slog through classes that have little to no bearing on the subject. When my dad wanted to be an enngineer, he had to take a bunch of political science classes that had nothing to do with the course, but we required to qualify for the course he really wanted.

If you want to be an enrichment assistant at a group home or day care that could probably be done with just a high school diploma or GED (disclaimer - I don't know requirements in all states).

I would call the Crucible in Oakland. They do glass blowing and seem to have networking friends everywhere.

UC Davis offers adult ed classes in working and blowing glass. They have a wonderful facility, I used to teach woodworking there and some of the students turn out some amazing art work.

ARC has placement tests to make sure that they place you in the right level of math and writing class. You would be surpriced how many people have to go to below college level classes in writing and math, before even thinking of learning college level. When working with veterans we had alot of this, because many of them hadn't been in a math class for quite sometime. I was a strainght A student in math, and still had to take a couple below college level classes. I also had a writing class. I am so glad I did, because I have been able to better express myself.

If you are looking at teaching an art form you might want to look into more education just because having at least an associates degree looks good on a resume.

But please never think it is because they are trying to see if you are smart enough. You are smart enough. They just want you to learn at your level, so you aren't overwhelmed and scared off.
