Queen?! A more representative figure of national character is this man:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bull

As a literary figure, John Bull is well-intentioned, frustrated, full of common sense, and entirely of native country stock. Unlike Uncle Sam later, he is not a figure of authority but rather a yeoman who prefers his small beer and domestic peace, possessed of neither patriarchal power nor heroic defiance.

Oddly enough my greatgreat grandfather and his brothers were yeoman farmers, and also owned three inns ( In a small village ! ) So I guess the part about small beer is correct.

I wish and hope Obama will have good presidency. The key for Obama success will be how honest and open he will be and what kind of leadership he will show when US economy will get much worse. The last will inevitably happen.

If I were you, I'd be worried by his 'change' slogan. I'm fundamentally liberal, but I thought McCain's 'these jobs aren't coming back' comment was first class. He had the bollocks to tell it how he saw it, rather than promise the earth.

the US was once the best in the world at everything and being that again would be nice.  we were not number one by accident.

It's so funny. Every country I've lived in cultivates the same belief about itself that it is the best, most beautiful, developed, perfect country on the planet. When you ask the people who make these grandiose claims what they are referring to, however, you are usually met with a blank stare and a mumble. So keep up the touristic slogans, baby: it won't give you a career in PR, but I just know it makes you feel so much better [8D] .

you obviously have alot to learn!  if you find this country so repulsive, please do not let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
i was born here and this is my home.  i see not one damn thing wrong with loving my country.  i am not the only US citizen that feels this way.
if this place you now call home is so bad, find a better place to land young lady.

yoohoo...bestbaby...KittinSol is not a US citizen

tell me how in the hell i am supposed to support our new president surrounded by negative people like you?

Alriiighty...

-you support what you believe in in spite of negativity

-as an adult, you make up your own mind and do not bend to the opinion of others

-stop inviting negativity by presenting an arguementive nature

-stop getting frustrated when others do not bend to your way of thinking

and finally:

-think for yourself.

You must know that we are the first to point and laugh at our failings.......it comes with being comfortable in your own skin.

Yes, self-derision is a strength, NorthernGent, but we are just as capable of jingoism and self-congratulation as any parochial French person or proud American citizen. Even the Swiss do this sort of thing. That's why nationalism makes me laugh: and notice how each time you point this out to a nationalistic non-thinker, they take it as if you were slamming their country? Pathetic.

We invented the double oval shaped paperclip so stick that in ya pipe and smoke it.[8|]

Need I also remind you heathens that James Starley the highly respected British engineer invented the highly practical Penny Farthing. Why is it people don't ride these anymore I demand a resurgence?

Don't speak too soon. We have Boris Johnson as London Mayor and he recently announced changes for Transport for London.

Boris Johnson, penny farthing, traffic...excellent

kittinSol -> RE: my hope for President Obama and this country (11/8/2008 9:11:56 AM)

Let's not forget tepid beer and pork scratchings. Throw them in the pot too. And hey presto: the best nation on earth [&:] .

stella41b -> RE: my hope for President Obama and this country (11/8/2008 9:15:03 AM)

I just hope that Americans can work together and with the rest of the world and find it within themselves to do so in the same spirit as they did after Katrina, and that the new administration leads the way to recovery, prosperity and lasting peace.

windchymes -> RE: my hope for President Obama and this country (11/8/2008 9:23:22 AM)

Just for the record, until Jan. 20, it's President-"Elect" Obama.

And I agree with the comments about nationalism....here we call it patriotism.  It all goes along with thinking our sports team is the best, our religion is the best, and our BDSM is the "one twue way".

exactly
what country assisted in rebuilding Europe post WW2?

Having not been bombed or invaded, we had a manufacturing infrastructure left.  And note, that was 60 years ago.  Now folks seem perfectly happy to buy cheap crap from stores that drive prices so low the manufacturers have to outsource to the Chinese, Vietnamese, Bangladeshis, etc.

i so hope that President Obama succeeds in making this country the best that it can be.

the US was once the best in the world at everything and being that again would be nice.  we were not number one by accident.  it happened because every single citizen worked hard and took pride in their own successes which in turn made our country great.

if only President Obama will use his gift to inspire everyone to work hard, to conserve, to penny pinch, to knuckle down, roll up their sleeves and not pull our country down by running to the trothe everytime we experience a financial set back.  social programs should be reserved for the weak, the sick and the children.  wall street should bite the damn bullet, cut the unnecessary wasteful spending and tighten their damn belts like us working class will be doing.  it will take all of us, not just wall street and not just main street.

the tax and spend policies must end and now!  if our taxes must go up to pay our debt and to keep our country safe so be it.  but i beg President Obama to get rid of the deficits and balance the budget.  if this is not accomplished, i am so afraid our nation will be destroyed from within.  our suffering may be giving up our cell phones, gas guzzling vehicles, vacations, other play toys etc.  but we all have to be willing to sacrafice.

we are in a recession.  why keep sucking from the government money it doesn't have???

I'm confused what tax and spend policies are you speaking of.Certainly not anything that has take place over the last 8 years, what we had from the Bush administration was a cut-tax's and spend policy.Quite frankly it was government for the rich by the rich....so before you decry those looking to the publc trough, lets first redress the inequities of the Bush administration.
Suprising post from you bestbaby, after weeks of listening to you decry the prospects of an Obama Presidency, you now speak of his "gift" and plead him to use it in a responsible way.Have no fear though as Presient Elect said on election night he hears you too....I'm not sue though ,given your priorities and the repulsion you seem to feel for social government programs you are going to like the answer. One way or another he will tick you off, compassionate government does seem to strike conservative leaning people like yourself the wrong way.

tell me how in the hell am i supposed to support our new president surrounded by negative people like you?  if i am not mistaken i have expressed my disappointment in the bush administration many times in these forums.  i will not agree with or support the tax & spend policies of any administration.  social programs are necessary, but these programs should not drain an already broken economy.   i think we all agree our economy is on a downward spiral.  so, i was simply saying that i believe we can save our economy and ourselves by working together.  what is wrong with everyone making sacrifices to guarantee our future?  we should not lay down and wait for the damn train to run us over!
i am capable of admitting that i may have been mistaken.  this past week i watched President Elect Obama speak to millions.  all of those people seemed to look to him for a solution.  so it occurred to me that he has a chance to rescue our nation by inspiring each and every one of us to accept the responsibility of preventing or lessen the blow of this much predicted recession/depression.
yes it will repluse me to watch this country go broke while wall street and main street are sucking her dry!

If what you need to be supportive is the notion that we were once a perfect country and how wonderful it would be if someone could lead us back there, then you may have a problem.  We are an imperfect nation made up of  imperfect people.  But we can be better as a people, and individually, and I hope that Obama can lead us all in that direction.  I am an American, and I love my country.  I also see clearly the flaws in this country.  And if people like you believe I should leave because of it, well, that's not gonna happen, sweet thing.  I'm staying!

Strictly speaking then it was a continent. I thought you would have listed the moon landing as one of the better examples or perhaps July the 4th 1776. Come on we all hate those we love most.

bestbabync -> RE: my hope for President Obama and this country (11/8/2008 3:39:08 PM)

well damn!

obviously i believe this country is not perfect and we do have our flaws.  i never said the country is perfect.

President Elect Obama has even said partisianship is over!  President Elect Obama says he believes we as the greatest nation in the world should begin our work to become even greater!  he promised to reunite this nation and put party politics behind us.  President Elect Obama is willing to welcome all of us to join in his dream for this country.  all americans, no matter their party affliation have expectations and desires for the future of this country.   President Elect Obama promised "change and hope"!  was that for just the people that voted for him or for everyone?

i am proud of my country and believe with all my heart that we can recover from our economic problems.  my hope is that President Elect Obama brings prospertity to our country.

Rose, i never said that you should leave this country, so please go back and check out my post.  obviously it was not directed toward you.

good god. I am glad I was born here, but have never once believed america is the greatest place on earth. We've done some cool shit, had some good times, some bad. But anymore, despite what PE obama says, I fear the days of the republic are waning.

And you believe every word you're told? Hope and change...give me a fucking break. Disappointment and the same shit. Thats the motto for todays world, no matter how many people have hope. And I don't care who said it, its the sad sad fact of life.

What if we don't want any part of his dream? What if we want to keep what we earn and not have it stolen from us and passed to those who didn't earn it? What if we don't want universal "death" care? What if we want to maintain our Constitutional rights? What if we actually want him to take his presidential oath seriously and not pursue a private agenda?

What if we don't want to be dragged into this "dream?"

And what if he has lied all along? What if you don't want what his real dream is?

We can recover from our economic problems, but it will not happen by embracing socialism. Socialism will make things worse; they always do.
