yes 49 and hit full menapause this year. Been in peri menopause for about 6-7 years having the hot flashes and night sweats. So based on that I figured if I can handle six years of that taking supplements would be my best option.

My body has turned into a freaking sadistic furnace that turns on with the slightest movement, getting something out of the kitchen means hurry back to the chair I sit in with the fan blowing on me.

I really wanted to avoid hrt drugs if possible but Im having second thoughts. I know soy and black cohash is said to be affective and I have been trying tho but still get tremendously overheated.

Im really trying to contain my medication intake, with the exception of my mental health drugs and zyrtec for year round allergies. Thats about it except for excredrin for tension headaches which if the best I have found to reliever those headaches caused by my neck locking up most of the time due to an old injury.

Also in the Nat'l thead I was seeking holisitc way to make tomorrow more successful. Im down to the minumum of 3 a day and do not want to rely on nic replacement to me that just changing the method. See my details on that thread I would really appreciate input on both. And yes any supplement would be reported to my drs to check for interactions that I may not have found on the internet.

Any input would be appreciated on both thread.

Thanking you in advance

You need your hormone levels assessed by an alternative md.  He/she can then prescribe hormones and the proper dosage.  These will not be synthetics like the pills the traditional drs will give you, hence fewer if any side effects.  Still you must manage them properly and keep all appointments for tests and follow up.  I recommend this avenue as it has been effective for me in treating other gynecological issues.  I have horrible side effects from birth control pills (synthetic hormones with extra kick to prevent pregnancy, though I was prescribed them to treat other conditions).  The natural hormones cleared up most of my symptoms and improved the others.  Once I had a handle on dosage I had NO side effects whatsoever.  I am not a dr and can only speak from my own experience, but this is a common next step when supplements are no longer enough.

Only YOU can decide what is going to be right for you.  Wish you the best!

I found that one bowl of cereal daily with soy milk controlled the hot flashes. Unfortunately the soy also blocked my ability to absorb Synthroid so I had to stop using it. If you have low thyroid you want to keep an eye out for it getting significantly worse if you try the soy.

It has been suggested ........Try a complex Vit B supplement. So I did ...  from just a few like B6 and B12 to all the VitB's including B3...........http://www.vitacost.com/This site is great.  Not only are supplements available but there is a library of information. Each supplement comes with a full disclosure label of ingredients.Black Cohash is not recommended for those with cardiac problems.Soy milk, soy snacks, soy flour instead of white....  don't need a pill to get your soy. I am just hitting my last month of one year of no periods..... my fingers are crossed.I have fans in every room.   Good luck.

~the answer could be not just soy but also vitamin E. I ran across an article on hot flashes and vita E a few years ago and it said that 4000 IU's daily made a huge difference for most women. I would also make sure my Omega 3's were high also.

An excellent source for information for natural menopause is Susun Weed's website on herbals and natural medicinals. She is the author of some of the best herbal books on the planet; I have always used them in my midwifery practice.

Speaking for myself - i went through surgical menopause at 40, and went straight on HR . For the most part, it has been fine, and now, being in my early 50's, i have become one hot momma!   ...   and not ina good way.  I am lucky that my Sir likes a cold house, because if the temp is over 70, i cook! My doctor put me on estratest (has testosterone in it), and that worked well - but my hair started to thin in front. I talked to him and he put me on estratest half strength.  This lowered the thermostat down a bit (thank goddess!) and now my head doesn't sweat any more. I still get hot, but i can live with that - and loosing a few pound also helped.

anyway, how your body reacts to hormones is very individual, so you and your doc will have to play it by ear.           good luck.

Menopause can start anywhere between 30 and 60 and (in my estimation) last wayyyyyyyyyy too long. I tolerated the side effects of Premarin for awhile then stopped taking it.

Keep in mind ~ there is nothing undignified about standing in the kitchen with one's head in the freezer :)

I went through menopause without a blip.  I expected a tsunami, and I didnt even realize I was "done" til my annual exam.  Both my mom and older sister had hot flashes, night sweats and heavy bleeding.  This is my reasoning for why I am different:

I  am lactose intolerant and have used soymilk since 1990.  I dont eat any red meat.  How might that help?  because I am not getting the hormones that dairy cows are fed to increase milk production.  I think this is an issue that bears examining.

I know I also just may be lucky.
