I don't have a problem with a 50 cal. rifle, but the machine gun part is different.  I don't know where to draw the line at where the 2nd amendment stops, but banning a semi automatic rifle because you dont like the name or the way it looks is where I personally draw the line.

You actually hunt with an assault weapon?....
I am not a gun enthusiast I never knew that anyone used them to hunt. I just wanted to know why someone would own one. If you hunt with one then that is a legitimate answer.

Aneirin -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:04:49 PM)

Many assault rifles have a machine gun like feature where by the flick of the safety catch, one can just hold the trigger and the thing will self load and fire until the mag is empty. A bit overkill for varmints isn't it, machine gun the bugger for want of accurate marksmanship.

Anybody, anybody at all, think that just maybe the gun manufacturers and their lobby see the opportunity to exploit "fears" to increase sales?

Not that an American corporation would do such a thing, mind you.....

Also, the term "assault rifle" is one I wish would change due to negative conotations.  I believe many in the industry call them sporting rifles now.

Thank you. The anti-gunners take that word and use IT like a weapon....and most of them don't have a clue what one even is or what differentiates them from your average hunting rifle.

Here's the basics.  Regardless of what gun control measures that are put in place, criminals will always have weapons available.  If they are going to commit various crimes up to and including murder, they just don't care about the possess charges and other menial penalties.  It will produce a black market effect as well.  Anything that is in demand and made illegal will produce some level of this effect.  Now the bad guys have the guns, the government has guns, but the rest are without unless they wish to deal in the dark underbelly of society.

I don't personally own guns, nor do I particularly want or need to, but that amendment was meant to protect law abiding, good citizens from their government, the very people now try to remove that right.  The rest such as personal protection and property security are just added benefits.  Do we need protection from our government?  Who knows until it is too late.  I may not like guns particularly, but I will defend the rights of the everyday person to own one.  I am not paranoid about governments or crime.  It is just giving folks equal footing.

Why are the gun sales rising?  Who knows?  Does it really matter?  Let the boys and girls have their toys and hope they know how to play with them responsibly and safely.

Actually, any gun that with "a flick of a switch" can go fully automatic and unload a magazine is a machine gun, and therefore is not what we are talkign about here.  A semi-automatic gun of any kind will expend one round for every individual time you sqeeze the trigger.  The ATF is very serious on this point.

Yup, believe it or not it was designed for military purposes....cost effective and accurate.

Imagine the headline--

"Economic Recovery led by Obama Gun Sales"

Yep, all of benefit to the arms industry, perhaps sales to citizens is a sideline to the military sales, the same industries that profit from war. Could it be that the American citizen is bred to fight  in wars for the profit of the arms manufacturers?

I said need or desire.  I don't have to justify anyone's choice in wanting one.  For the record, I own one, and will own more before Jan.
Also, the term "assault rifle" is one I wish would change due to negative conotations.  I believe many in the industry call them sporting rifles now.  I do know that many people enjoy target shooting and varmit shooting, with them.
Joe I did not ask you to justify anything, you made a statement I just asked you to expandon it.I am very curious as to why a private citizen would need an assault rifle. You made the statement,I am just trying to understand it
BTW changing the name from assault rifle to sporting rifle is probably helpful.....sort of like changing Inheritance tax....to Death tax...puts a whole different spin on something that remains the same...cute.

Thank you though I am sure it will bring debate.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:14:23 PM)

Just how is the industry driving up these sales?  I really want to know that.  The people I know who are buying guns are not saying anything about the industry, but are concerned primarily about guns and ammo being taxed to oblivion.  If the industry makes more money because of demand from the consumer end, then I say the market is functionsing well.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:14:29 PM)

The constitution gives us the right.  However...that particular document was written well before assault weapons hit the scene.   If your'e loading a musket after each shot, repeat firing takes on new meaning.

When the right to bear arms was penned....I doubt they were thinking of Uzi's.

Just a thought.

Aneirin -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:15:53 PM)

Oops, then the assault rifle I used was different then, safety, single shot and continuous, the L1A1 SLR.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:17:36 PM)

sort of like when liberals started calling themselves progressives huh?

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:19:55 PM)

Right.  semi autos have two positions, safe and fire, with fire being semi-auto.  Guns like the military use, have three positions...safe, semi, and full auto.
