It still doesn't change the fact we don't require a Howitzer to till the garden, nor should we need extreme range or power to kill a deer.

Apparently you missed my point. As I explained, the overkill military assault weapon that I use is not extreme in range or power and is on par with the very weapon that you suggested would "impress" you more....your grandfather's single shot. Hardly a Howitzer. I'm not some out of control psycho running through the woods playing Rambo as some of you would seem to be suggesting. I'm suggesting that it is more a case of some not understanding and overestimating what the term "assault" means.

There are many sporting rifles on the market that have MUCH more killing power round for round than the vast majority of assault rifles.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 9:31:09 PM)

An AR15 is a .223 caliber which is really small actually, and used mostly for varmits.  In Virginia, it is illegal to shoot deer with a round that small.  The bolt action rifles that many deer hunters use around here are easily twice the size in caliber and 3 times the weight of the .223

BamaD -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 9:46:08 PM)

When 20/20 did their hitpiece on assault weapons they "proved" that assault weapons were " too powerful" by shooting a watermelon with a AR-15.  They got no noticable results.  So on tv the showed the person firing the AR-15 and the results from a typical deer rifle (30-06) that being an exploding watermelon.  The truth being that the assault round (other than with the AK-47 and its clones) are wimp rounds designed to disable a person rather than kill.   The AK-47 round is still weaker than the 30-06, as pointed out comprable to a 30-30.  The last deer rifle I owned was a remengton 7400  30-06  4 (or 10) round semi-automatic.   The Ar15 is good for home defense though I personally prefer a 12 ga.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 9:50:13 PM)

The .223 round was preferred by the Defense Dept. for two reasons.  One, the round was more likely to wound a soldier as to kill.  It generally takes two soldiers to carry off a wounded soldier, thus taking three out of the fight, at least temporarily.  Second, the smaller, lighter round means that a soldier can carry more on his person into the field, and would likely not run out of ammo as fast.

Frothing at the mouth, then. If you check the facts as suggested, you'll see that you've been misled, at the very least. Certainly, you're coming across with tons of generalities and absolutely zilch facts on here. The truth is out there: look for it.

From "FactCheck".org:

"On the issue of urban policy, Obama says he favors "commonsense measures" to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children, and that he would bring back the expired "assault weapon" ban and make it permanent."

It sounds like you need to read your own sites as they disagree with your own statements. He has already stated that he will interfere with our rights. So it sounds like you have been misled, not those who have already educated themselves in the facts.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:15:45 PM)

"Commonsense measures" cannot be anything but restrictions on guns.  The sad fact is, the only people who are affected by gun laws are the law abiding citizenry.  The criminal element already has no qualms with breaking laws, so why on earth would one more little law mean anything to him?  Its not like with a new law, guns will suddenly disappear from the streets.  There are millions of guns out there, and they are not going away.  If you shut down every manufacturer and banned every single gun, there will still be guns on the streets.  The only problem with that little scenario is that you will be making criminals out of law abiding citizens who would chose to not turn in their guns, and the criminals would feel free to pilage at will.

This would be the "Brady Bill" pushed through congress by Sarah and Jim Brady...both of whom are very active republicrats. To characterize this as a demopub bill is to be less than accurate.

*cough* They are both registered Democrats...... It is entirely a democrat pushed bill, both sponsored and lobbied by them and a few RINOs signed on as well.

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:17:10 PM)

with my depression, it would not be a wise idea for me to own a firearm. too much of a temptation

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:20:50 PM)

I would have to agree with you if you are suffering from depression.  I hope you will better soon.

UmbraDomina -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:28:53 PM)

here is a fact, accept it if you want.

ANY law banning, or restricting guns or ammo, or over taxing it, to the point it can not be bought will NOT stop criminals from using firearms.
It will stop the people who follow the laws ..... which shock upon shock are not what most criminals do.
Make a law that everyone in the country must turn in their firearms...... guess what... only law abiding citizens would do so, the criminals would not....... make it so expensive people can't buy guns or ammo, guess what law abiding people won't.... criminals will simply steal them.
Criminals will always find a way to have a weapon. Honestly how many news stories do you see about a murder in TV? How many of them involve a assult rifle? How many involve a knife or a baseball bat? Maybe we should ban all knives or baseball bats instead? It seems to me the greatest crime commited against the American people was preformed with..... oh yes box cutters? We should certianly ban those.

If my visit to the county courthouse yesterday was any indication I'm guessing firearms license applications are on the rise, too. There wasn't any trend to the applicants I saw, either. Young and old, male and female. I wasn't the only person with concerns about the second amendment, so it seems.

Well said.  Funny,  I was given a box cutter at age 16 by my employer, without them running a background check on me or making me wait 5 days to cool off.  Things sure were lax back then.  I am surprised any of us are alive to tell about it.

DavanKael -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:37:44 PM)

I'm a proud many-weapon-owning (Including guns) American.  I prefer blades but each unto their own.
I think that there are a lot more important things that Obama is going to have on his plate besides going after guns, not to mention, the outcry would be immense if true illegalization were to be attempted.
Not to mention there's this document we often seem to forget about called the Constitution.
While it may get trampled on and bent sometimes, mostly it seems to endure.
I have the sincere hope that it continues to do so.

I think that there are a lot of factors that could be contributing to increased gun sales....and Obama certainly would not be at the top of my list.

obama's the top of my list.

Ok, I understand the right to own a weapon....someone please tell me why people need to own assault weapons? It's not a shot at anyone's Constitutional rights nor an editorial comment, it is just an honest inquiry.

um...because they want one?

how about this...is it overkill to own a car that can drive over 70 miles an hour in the US? Yes...

but, why should people buy cars that can go over 70?

because they want one.

I would love to own an FN FAL (beautiful rifle, shot one a few weeks ago). I just love the rifle and I love the round. Would I use it, perhaps. For home defense I'd use a shotgun. for concealed carry I'd use a .357. But why do I want an assault rifle? becuase I like them. It's kinda like how I want a Maserati - I think I want one and that is all the justification I need for my decision.

Not sure why anyone would want one of those, unless they have Rambo fantasies, but if everything goes pear shaped one thing is for sure, with all those guns in private hands, how long will the US population last ? Have gun, will kill, for whatever.

the US population would be fine if it's law abiding citizens had assault rifles. why would it not be fine?

look at switzerland, all males are issued assault rifles to be kept in their homes. is there nation errupting into chaotic mad max-esque scenarios? nope.

and let me tell you this, burglary is rare there.

Okay ,just for shits and giggles give me one example of a private citizens "need" for an assault rifle....

I'll be glad to.

I want one.

what is the difference between a want and a need? they are both subjective to the individual, are they not? if an individual thinks he needs one, he needs one.

is this difficult for you to grasp?

you may not think I need an 80/20 linen silk blend pair of pants. but I think I do need them. are you going to claim that I don't need them and shouldn't be allowed to buy them?

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 10:53:20 PM)

The thing is, a Chicago politician could pass things that affect Chicagoans only.  An Ilinios Senator can pass things that affect Illinois only.  As President, he could push for things that affect everyone, well, at least the law abiding ones of us.  The thing about a greater community good, or however he put it, could really allow one to apply any kind of gun control to any community.  Just because you have Dodge City in the southside of Chicago, does not mean that the whole of Chicago, or Illinois in general, has a problem.  Personally, if you want to reduce gun crime, make the punishment for using a gun in a crime not worth the benefit of being armed.  Double any sentence if a gun is involved, and do not allow one day off for good behavior on any sentence that's gun related.  While I am at it, let's start talking about hard labor for these violent types.  Oh wait, we can't do that, the ACLU won't like that too much.

Cool. I'll have a couple of H bombs please. No need to wrap them.

you do realize that all the h bombs in existence are in private hands, right? I mean, do you honestly think we have any control on how h bombs are used now?

I'm not more or less comfortable with private citizens having atomic weapons than I am governments having them.

You actually hunt with an assault weapon?....
I am not a gun enthusiast I never knew that anyone used them to hunt. I just wanted to know why someone would own one. If you hunt with one then that is a legitimate answer.

what answers are not legitimate and why are they not legitimate?
