lostgirl83 -> Headaches after eating? (11/14/2008 8:04:45 PM)

Hey, thanks for reading my post... let me start this off by saying I do have a doctors appointment already, its just not until after Thanksgiving due to "overbooking" at my doctors office. I just thought Id see if anyone else has this problem or has any ideas as to what it may be in the meantime...

For about the past two weeks I've been getting severe headaches... I do get migraines which I take Imitrex for as needed, these headaches are not migraines. These seem to come on suddenly without the usual symptoms that I would get with migraines. At first I blamed it on the dry winter air and all the heaters being on, but its not sinus either. When I made the doctors appointment the nurse suggested that I try to keep track of the onset... It seems to be just after I eat. Today I had instant oatmeal for breakfast and within half an hour of finishing my head hurt so bad I couldn't focus on the computer screen at work. I was dizzy and sick to my stomach I took some tylenol and also two motrin and finally it was manageable. At lunch I had chinese food (bad I know) it was tofu in garlic sauce with some asparagus... same thing again only this time it was so bad I had to go out to my car and just close my eyes for a bit until the motrin and tylenol kicked in. By the time dinner came around I was scared to eat lol... now that I've made the connection as to when Im getting the headaches I didn't want to aggravate things anymore. I did end up having a chicken breast with just a little pepper and some steamed broccoli... and I did get a mild headache but nothing compared to what I have had.

Any clues? Anyone have this problem? Again, I'm not looking for an online diagnoses, I do have my appointment, Im just looking for possible ideas as to what it may be and how to help it until then because I'm miserable!

Are you watching your salt intake?  High content of salt can push the blood pressure way up thus causing headache.

Is the meat you are eating organic?  If not, you could be allergic to the meat industry injected hormones.  Is there msg in the meat?

Are you allergic to soy?

Are you pregnant? lol

Sugar or sodium intake maybe?  Both can cause problems resulting in headaches!

I would advise getting tested to see if you have any allergies or food intolerances. goodluck, headaches are no good!

Well I hadn't thought of salt intake or blood pressure, mostly because unless there's salt already in something I really don't use it, and historically when going to the doctors my blood pressure has always been low. Although I suppose enough salt to make my blood pressure normal or just slightly above normal could be just enough to give me problems...

Typically I do buy organic produce and meat b/c I have a child and don't want to expose him to the hormones and chemicals. Although I can't say 100% that everything I eat is organic so I suppose that could also be a possibility.

Soy allergies? I hope not b/c I love chocolate soy milk!! I do eat a ton of soy products... maybe Ill stay away from those for a while and see if it makes a difference.

pregnancy?! I hadn't thought of that either... now Im paranoid... i don't think i am....

Im off to figure out what I can eat for breakfast with no salt no sugar and no soy....

I'm going to take a different approach and start off very simple..    When is the last time you've been to a dentist? Dental issues can manifest this way, and any hot/cold/sweet would bring that out, which speaks for everything you mentioned eating.

I hope you get taken care of soon.

I too will take a different approach......When was the last time you when to a chiropractor or to a massage therapist? Are you under stress?Headaches come for a miriad of reasons.I am in a pain management clinic right now, partially for headaches and in one week have learned more about why or how we get pain and how to manage it with simple techniques.Headaches are a product of the blood vessels in our neck and head constricting due to some think specific and when the constriction turns to relaxation ~~~~> bingo headache,http://www.medicinenet.com/headache/article.htmTry learning about headaches so that when you do get into see the MD you know exactly what to ask.

It could be allergy related or as somebody mentioned a dental problem...

Though the dizzy feeling and feeling sick is something I usually have when my blood pressure drops (which is also quite low), so taking a layman approach, it could be that your blood pressure does drop and that might give you the dizzy spells and headaches?

It could also be hormonally related, there is certain food I can't eat shortly before my period because for some odd reason I'll react allergic while any other time I have no problem with it...

Does the headache come on when you stand up? I have low blood pressure and one thing I am experiencing
is a headache when standing after sitting for a  time. The doctor said and I try to remember to take a couple of
deep breaths before standing. For the migraines, you might try adding 800 mg of Magnesium to your daily
vitamin routine. My doctor told me especially for females they find that migraines in females need more
magnesium in their diet than even the the official RDA recommendations.

You might also think low blood sugar - i find it interesting that the oatmeal gave you a severe headache, where chicken breast and broccoli gave you mild headache.  I would think the sugar content in oatmeal would be higher than chicken and broccoli.  It would seem to be an odd presentation, but some people do have atypical presentations.

You might track sugar content as well.

Hi Lostgirl,

How long are you going between meals? Perhaps your headaches are low-blood sugar related..
I have to watch what I eat and how often as my blood sugar tends to be low. Especially when I'm stressed out. There have been times I've gotten bad headaches after eating but that's only when I've gone too long between meals. For a while there, it was happening all the time.. I'd eat and right afterwards i'd be sick with a headache.. I realized pretty fast what was happening and I just adjusted my eating habits and it's all good now.. I still get headaches but they're hormonal and I know exactly when it's coming and how to manage it.

Eat a little somein-somein between meals.. Even if it's some soda crackers, a peice of cheese or an apple. Apples are good.

Maybe try Advil? Only if you can tolerate it as some can't. Also, Excedrin Migraine works well too.. Tylenol doesn't do squat for me.. I wish you well girl.. Only those who've suffered with dibilitating headaches can relate.. It's like a secret club that no one wants to belong to..
