I can make made-to-measure fully boned period corsets (latest one being a late 1880's corset for myself) and was just wondering if there was any sort of market for them, or if everyone buys them ready-made. I'd love to make a living from it but they take so much time!

As someone who adores corsets, even more so those that are extremely unique.

I would suggest setting up a store on Ebay and test the waters for say 6 months and see what it is like. If you get a good following of your designs, then I would highly suggest that you begin designing a website with a store.

I look forward to viewing some photos of your creations. The best of luck to you!!!

I'm sure there's a market for it. I know if I had the money, I'd get one for my pet. (yay being a broke college student) :(

I might be a bit wary of ebay being overseas and all, but it is relatively easy to set up a webpage

There of course is a niche market for them. . .however I'd think the key is making something very unique (because there are already shops out there that make custom corsets,) establish a reputation of producing a good quality item, and finally to be able to undrcut the other stores in price. Otherwise, there really is not incentive for the buyer to come to you.

would it be concidered exceptable to purchase a corset or other like wear for a Mistress? is it possible for a regular person to construct one on their own?

That would depend on your Mistress.

michaelGA -> RE: Hand made corsets (12/23/2005 8:32:43 AM)

i no longer have a Mistress, and finding one locally has turned into a major project. i've found one here in town that actually talks to me on occaission, the others live out of town. go figure.

I do know there is a market for large sizes. They will pay money for something that fits well and is very well made. Making them for specific measurments is the only way to go. If I could afford one, I would have a dozen. I know someone here that makes them and she will do in any material..but I know she is not at all commercial. She does this for folks she knows..I have learned how to make a corset pattern from her..Custom is the way to go...quality..

Respectfully,
sultry

BigEyes -> RE: Hand made corsets (12/28/2005 7:40:54 PM)

As I work from exact personal measurements, it doesn't matter what size or shape someone is. And my last corset was leatherette (a synthetic leather) which was a bitch to sew, so I can work with most fabrics.

Another worry that is stopping me - in my opinion, a corset should be fitted fairly regularly throught the making process, to make crucial changes (let darts out etc) - but this surely wouldn't be possible in most cases!

On an extra note;

I'd love to make corsets for larger women. I'm quite slim myself but very chesty and understand the problems we have with regular sizes. I would love to make one for a big woman, as long as she was prepared to undress for me for fittings.

Ladies - there is NOTHING quite like a corset made to your size once you have been laced into it!! I talk from experience!

newflowers -> RE: Hand made corsets (12/29/2005 8:09:09 PM)

Sign me up - I'd love to have one. Actually, I'd love to have more than one. Please send me an email - I will email you. If you're local (i should have checked) let's make a deal. My birthday is next week!

I've replied to your message as I'm sure you know! If only I was closer we could have sorted something out... ah well.

These folks might be helpful if you need a corset in a larger size, or for TV/TG.

I've had good luck with them, as a woman generously gifted by the Universe, though I wore out the corset I purchased a decade ago from them (I should have purchased 2 when I had the opportunity!).

There is a huge market for handmade corsets. Heck, I'm always looking for great corsets!!!

Start by taking some pictures of what you have made and put them up for auction on eBay.

Look into going to fetish conventions and setting up a booth or getting in with someone that has a booth.

Renissance Fairs are also a great place to sell corsets.

Another idea is to find a small lady's boutique that specializes in novelties and novelty clothing. They may order some ready made corsets, or ask for a photo book with pictures and pricing. They can collect half up front to cover your costs and their profit, then the remainder collected upon delivery of the finished product. (Aphrodite's Closet is one here in Atlanta I know does this.)

You could also set up a website online with pictures and see about getting links on places like collarme and other bdsm websites.

Good luck!!!

I like the eBay suggstion, above.

When I visited Columbus, Ohio, I noticed a couple of store in an area the call the 'Short North', an arty section not far from the OSU campus. Of course Columbus is a bit of a kinky town anyway.

Get this: I hadn't paid a lot of attention to corsetry until a gf showed me an episode of Martha Stewart with featured corsets. Who would have thought!

CrymzonKajira -> RE: Hand made corsets (12/30/2005 6:32:59 PM)

Yes, I am most definately interested in your designs, could you please contact me directly to work something out. Thank you kindly.
