I've yet to see a phone that performed most of those features as well as the stand-alone devices do. My digital camera has a 10x optical zoom and auto-compensates for shaky hands. My MP3 player can be operated with gloves on through my jacket pocket, plugs into my PC with no adapters when I want to add songs, and runs off of AAA batteries so I don't have to screw with a charger when I'm taking a trip on the bike. I never owned a PDA.

The landline phone is a fair cop, tho.

LMAO!  That is one of the best reasons I have ever heard for giving cell phones to family members.  Have you considered a radar tracking device or walkie talkies?

One of the great things about having a cell phone is keeping up with family and friends when you're out in public and you get separated. My Mom has a bad habit of getting lost at the Mall, at the Ren. Faire, the State Fair, the craft fair, or any other kind of Fair or outdoor place where there are lots of people and lots of shiny things to look at. So now when we got anywhere with Mom, the cell phone must go with her or I don't go. I get tired of her complaining about how we keep losing her.

I have a Blackberry and use it regularly - Phone, email, internet, text messaging (no my thumbs are not sore), alarm clock, calendar, notes, etc.. It doesn't have a camera on it, which is fine with me because I prefer the options my personal camera has, as well as the photo quality.

I got my mom a cell phone and put it on my plan. Now she can call her friends & family without paying long distance.

I have an iPod and prefer to keep phone & MP3 separate, so I can dock the iPod and play music while doing other things and keeping my phone nearby and handy.

My land line is only used for a fax machine now, and for my DSL connection.

The arrangement works for me. Can't really see it any other way right now.
