Well I have been on Depo for over a year and I have found that it caused me very large migrained and weight loss(which wasnt bad). I could not figure out the weight loss until I looked at the side effects. My cycle did become more heavy and longer than before. I had to finally get a prescription to stop it. I realized that when I asked my doctor about the side effects, he didnt know what he was doing. It took my own research to see all of my side effects.

Hey Suz!!

Yes, hot flashes suck big time, but I found a way to get rid of them... I use progesterone cream, it helps with the flashes and mood swings!!

I used depo after the birth of my last child for only 3 months.....and I only used it for 3 months...becasue i sepnt all of those 3 month bleeding...I ended up having to use estrogen on top of the depo to avoid just bleeding out....I also had been using the patch for the past 3 years...to keep my hormones in line...I had suffered from profound pelvic pain for the past 6 years. and i wore the pateches back to back for 13 weeks....the only thing with those types of hormonal birth control products is that one drawback is that one doesnt miss a period and may be preggers and not even realize it.... nothing is 100% they all have at least a 1 % failure rate!!!!

becareful and have fun

Depo is great if it works for you, however, keep in mind that there is a reason that you have a period - and general consensus of every doctor that I've talked to around here, and heard about from other areas says that you should not be on it for more than a two year period. Most doctors around here suggest that you are on it for a year, then on bc pills for at least 6 months. The one and only doctor in this area who has kept anyone on it for more than 2 years is now being sued for malpractice because 4 of his patients that he kept on it for 5+ years straight had some serious serious side effects (cramping beyond "normal", spontanious and continuous bleeding, and one of them had to have a 4 lb clot removed from her uterus). It does suck to flip back and forth, but as I said, there is a reason that we have periods, so just be aware of your body and what it is telling you.

BeachMystress -> RE: Depo (2/21/2005 4:26:15 PM)

Never trust a Dr to know the side effects or the drug interactions. My pharmacist has caught several that would have had a bad interaction. These were prescribed by the same Dr on the same day. *sighs* Remember, some of the people we call Dr graduated at the top of their class. others at the bottom. Their diploma doesn't tell us which.

i have heard other that had these experiences, also. However, i was on Depo for seven years before getting off of it a few months ago and have had no problems. Well, besides the fact that i'd gotten spoiled by having no periods. [;)] They started right back up in the second month i was off of the Depo.

i guess i was one of the lucky ones!

I am just curious, what dose of Depo did you recieve and how often?

craftywulf -> RE: Depo (2/23/2005 10:37:57 AM)

Chris i recived a shot once a month 150 mil and i loved having controal of my body for a change.Nice thing about this is you can stop whenever you like and things will return to normal in time

stephaniet -> RE: Depo (2/23/2005 11:11:26 AM)

I was on depo for a little over two years. I had no periods[:)], but A LOT of weight gain, about 40 lbs[:(]. It was not due to any other changes in my life because I am an active person. But here is what did happen to me on depo. I got pregnant. Not just a baby but twins. So here is my advice, no birth control is 100% so use percaution at all times.

Yes, I imagine it would be very relaxing.

Just to compare experiences, the standard birth control dose is 150 mg given every three months... so you were getting three times as much depo. Did you have any side effects? A number of women here have mentioned weight gain.

craftywulf -> RE: Depo (2/23/2005 12:47:53 PM)

No Chris i didnt have a waight problem i think thats because i felt better about myself and took better care of myself.But your milage may very is the key to this as we are all diffrent and our bodies can act diffrent to meds with us where another person may have diffrent problems or sucesses.

Masterrsslave100 -> RE: Depo (2/28/2005 7:24:43 PM)

I am currently using Depo which I truely love. This is the seccond time around for me. The last time I used Depo was after childbirth in 1995. I have also used the pill with condoms, natural family planning, the sponge, and the diaphram throughout my reproductive history. Besides the occassional spotting and acne (which in my opinion now makes me look younger lol) this time around-I have had very little problems. The side benefits have included little to no cramping when I do have that small period during my third month right before I need that shot, a almost 100% decrease in migraines which effect me during that time of month, and my not so nice seizure problem that also effects me during that time of month. This also gave me the added benefit of my neuro being able to decrease my anti-seizure meds. For the bone loss issues, I take calcium and Vitamin D supplements. I guess in deciding if Depo is right for you-you need to look at your whole body and the big picture

Just my $.02 worth of advice

Sunriselady -> RE: Depo (3/5/2005 11:41:29 AM)

One of the side effect of depo is loss of sexual desire. In fact, it is one of the drugs often used in treatment of offenders. Just a thought I would research the drug very very carefully.

ILovePain13 -> RE: Depo (4/23/2005 6:51:09 PM)

I am on it and at the end of my first shot. But since no periods my cervix is large and tender. So I'm not doing my next shot until I have a period. I wish I had a uterine vaccuum and could avoid periods by just sucking out the lining. Don't think they have the home kits for that tho.

PenelopePitstop -> RE: Depo (4/24/2005 9:31:22 AM)

I was on Depo for 18 months and it did my head in. Many women have no problems at all though, so don't take my experience as a benchmark by any means.

My weight ballooned and there were always shortages in the national depo supply so it was a risky business: I couldn't always get my shot on the date it was due. It was lovely not having periods, but it took nine months for them to return after the shots stopped. This meant that I couldn't be sure of my fertility at any time, there were no periods to provide a clue and to be honest I felt out of touch with my body.

My libido utterly disappeared, so it's a brilliant contraceptive for that reason alone :) I found it so funny. I took it so I could have sex, and then found I didn't want any.

I don't think it's good to bombard one's system with too many hormones the way Depo does, but due to a health problem I can't use the pill as it doesn't stay in my system for long enough. I'll try implants next time around because they released a smaller more gradual dose into your bloodstream.

siamsa24 -> RE: Depo (4/24/2005 12:28:17 PM)

Another birth control that you could look into is the NuvaRing. It releases the hormones at a steady rate and I have had no problems with it. I don't know if it would work for you, but it may be worth talking to your doctor about.

sexysubbunny -> RE: Depo (4/24/2005 1:22:58 PM)

ahhhhhhh the Depo, such a wonderful amazing thing!
i have been on it for nearly 3 yrs now and its been great, no more periods of course and "luckily" i am one out of thousands in which it has "increased" my SEX DRIVE, a big tenfold, in most women, it usually does the opposite, but for me, i am a lucky one! Wow!
it has also kept my weight down considerably another "lucky" statistic for me.. as in most women, you usually gain weight.
so all in all, its been great for me.........and maybe if your the other one in a thousand, you might get to share what i do!
Good luck !!

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Depo (4/24/2005 2:36:14 PM)

The impants leave scars because they cut a lil slit into the skin to isnert them. plus you ca see them under the skin and in sever cases implants have been known to migrate.

My periods stoped almost imediatly but eveeeeeeeeeery weird once in a while I spot. not blood blood but a rusty tinge to normal wiping

My sex drive never was there except as a kid which is a totaly inapropriate board topic so I am not going there.

So I have no ezxperince with depo making me horny less or libido less. And it has not made me gain weight. My laziness has and my unawareness of nutrition. Once I pay attention to nutirtion I am loosing weight.

Sweeticing -> RE: Depo (4/26/2005 2:50:47 PM)

I had to stop taking the depo it put helped me put on 50lb in one year and i started losing my hair. and i dont mean a little here or there it was by the handfuls thankfuly i have thick hair. It also made my b/p go up so anyhow i have never been able to get the weight off but my b/p is normal now and my hair is also
