mskatrinaj -> A PR issue/question (11/18/2008 12:53:03 PM)

It has been brought up that our current barrier rule might help us with public relations in showing that we are a SSC club. Some say that without this rule, we may be looked at as simply a sex club (even though in the state of AZ we already are listed as a sex club).

What are everyone's thoughts on the public relations effect of having a barrier rule or not?

I'mnot sure waht a barrier rule is.  Please explain.
Rather than SSC, I prefer RACK; it's a more recent and more accurate acronym.

What exactly is a barrier rule please??

ooh .. good question.  It's a rule about fluid exchange - mainly that condoms, gloves, dental dams must be used whenever there is contact with body fluids .. or mucus membranes etc.  (that's a shortened version).

Do you really think it would make a difference?  It's not like the state has a designation for it (SSC Club, I mean), and I wouldn't think barriers=SSC anyway, I would think barriers=arbitrary rules.

Personally, I find barrier rules rather, well, silly.  After all, you allow mouth-to-mouth kissing, right?  That's a fluid exchange.  So it comes down to perceived risk (which is not the same as actual risk)... the perceived riskier activities get the barrier.

I prefer to decide for myself how I play, and as long as I'm not flinging body fluids on someone else (non-consensually), why should it matter to anyone else whether I use a barrier or not?

Most German BDSM clubs have that as a guideline (not enforced) and hand out free condoms, signs everywhere to use them etc. Makes a lot of sense, somebody told me that the same is true in swinger clubs, but since I never really ventured into one, I wouldn't know.

I think it is a great idea and from a PR point of view stressing the health/responsible behaviour factor is a great idea

Ms. Katrina,

Upon reflection, my answer may seem a bit flippant and/or harsh.  That isn't the way I intended it.  Our local dungeon has the barrier rule as well, and as a DM, I enforce it, whether I agree with it or not.  It applies to all players, regardless of relationship status, so fluid-bound partners have to go by it too.  That's one of the reasons I find it silly... people in a fluid-bound relationship must use the same barriers in a club as everyone else... but there is nothing inherently SSC about it... it just makes it easier to apply the rule to everyone than to have the DMs try to keep straight who has to use a barrier and who does not.

There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to use barriers, and as long as they clean up after themselves, I feel it should be between the two people involved.
