FelinePersuasion -> What goes on scientifically when items reach experation date? (12/22/2005 10:18:12 PM)

We have mylanta around and wouldn't you know it you have it for ever and don't need it but when you do it expired years ago lol. our last bottle expired 3- 04

What happens to the ingrediants and stuff after experation, do they begin to break down?

the simple answer is yes they break down, and lose effectiveness over a given period of time (each product has its own determined time based on the ingredients). today is my first day of xmas break from teaching high school science kids, so i am not much in the mood to go into scientific details right now...it's bedtime.

really depends what it is.

Some things break down or deactivate, things like vitamins and medication tend to do that. Liquids will also begin to seperate. Also a lot of times the dates are a sell by not use by and lots of products can saftly be used after the sell by date.

Though many medications stay good long after there exp date, they will break down. Not only do they break down and loose effectivness but some may also change chemicaly and become toxic. So why risk it? Just make a quick run to the nearest gas station or store for simple OTC stuff.

thank you for the link; i always knew most medications were safe for quite some time after the pharmacy label typed expiration date (and often at odds with the date on the container if it was the original factory one), but i've not had time to search for this link. now, i have backup. thank you again.
