pawsie -> Sick kitten (11/24/2008 11:40:54 PM)

I know this is off topic and all but this is the off topic thread, my kitten had to have a operation now she's crying nad sickie and it breaks my heart to see her like this and I dunno what to do...sigh

eri -> RE: Sick kitten (11/24/2008 11:42:06 PM)

Call the vet who did the operation and ask them if her behaviour is normal. It could just be that she will be miserable for a day or so.

What kind of operation?  Is she eating?  Drinking?  Look at her gums and see if they are pink - if they are white it is a bad sign and she needs to go to the kitty ER now.

Get back to the vet, if only for something for the pain

The pain meds could be what is making her "sickie" ... (I assume this means she's throwing up.)

The vet who did the surgery can give you more and better information than any of us possibly could do.

This is so very true, but it is difficult in my experience to reach a vet at 2 am.

poor kitty, it could be that the pain meds are wearing off and she is hurting. Best bet is calling the vet, but I agree check for things like pink gums and just try to keep her in a dark quiet environment

Hold her and comfort her if you can.  Mine recently had surgery and they told me to cuddle him as much as he wanted.  He had teeth pulled, was declawed, was spade, and they had to open his abdomen to get to the testicle that hadn't descended so he had four major sore spots.  They cry because they are not used to the pain and don't understand it.  Like a baby they need to be soothed and reassured.  To eat he wanted to lay on the bed next to me and eat from a can on the bed while laying down.  I would put small amount of things like cottage cheese on my finger and let him lick it off.

They tend to bounce back quickly.  If the pain and discomfort are too severe definitely call the vet.  Otherwise just give extra TLC for the next few days and that should help.  It will also strengthen the bond between you.

Call the vet if they are not open, some towns have emergency vet clinics that you can call. Look in the phone book.
