For underfloor heat, look at a aquahot system. It uses diesel to fire a boiler and you can run the hot antifreeze in pipes under the floor. It is used in boats and rvs all the time. I think the company is called vehicle systems but it has been used by a couple of friends who are off the grid that way too. Or you could go with a large solar array and a large collection tank and use that hot water too. For cold you could look at geothermal. I have friends who use that for both but I am not sure of the power drain it will take.

Here is something I always thought about doing.  Never quite had the guts to do it.
1.  Paint at least one entire wall with magnetic paint (http://www.magnamagic.com/start.html)
2.  Get a nice hook with one of those super strong magnets.  (http://www.emovendo.net/magnets/hooks/?gclid=CIrOmLiAsJcCFQxKGgodwTkBjg)
3.  Put it anywhere you want on the wall.

If you do this, I would love to see a picture of how it worked out.

if the OP is using short logs and river rock to build his cabin, why go to the trouble of carting in diesel, stove fuel or kerosene? He has all that wood and if the OP understand the concept of creating charcoal and there is sand nearby with tree roots within, digging a hole beneath, placing hot embers within and sealing up the hole trapping the heat, the OP can create briskets for BBQing. Not to mention aging it so that it could be used in the furnace for the purpose of blacksmithing.
Diesel is a dirty fuel. Natural gas and propane are not an option either as they create acidics and there is quite enough of that in our environment. The OP really should use what is available around him, less reliant on outside sources ensures privacy for the dungeon that he wishes to build within his cabin.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Sub4hire – I don’t keep a lot of valuables around and I have a gun safe to put things I really don’t want to lose in. But, I will watch for theft. (I wonder if I could get away with peppering a thief’s butt with rock salt? That would so hurt!)

Okay Okay – heat will be provided. NO sub-sicles! [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m27.gif[/image]

If I do go off grid then I will use either a groundheat and wind generator system, a compost or methane digester (I’ve built a couple of them before just for fun) heat system, or a thermal mass fireplace (not made out of river rock).
