Amazing how animals show more compassion than people do.

Lucylastic -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 3:07:35 PM)

I watched I am Legend last night... and bawled like a baby, my booo came up and buried her head in my shoulder cos I cried.
I cant watch animals get hurt by humans, it affects me deep down and angers me in a way that isnt healthy. So Im going to give the clip a miss.
Human suffering is bad enough,  people getting hurt by their own lack of safety is one thing. Cruelty is another..altho Im a evil bitch Im not vicious or vindictive.
My dogs are my furbabies, and if you want to hurt  them you are gonna end up worse than they are.

i totally agree with BlackPhx :) animals are so much more THERE than alot of humans are willing to admit. as long as we keep the divide betwen "us" and "them" as wide as possible, we feel better about ourselves. or something silly like that.
my dog learns things VERY fast. he's a bit neurotic because now that his friend has died, i've sort of turned into a smothering mother hen =p but i taught him to high-five in about 5 minutes over thanksgiving =p he knows my rats' names and if they get out of their cage, he'll follow them and tell me where they are =p if i notice one is out and ask him "where is suchnsuch?" he'll perk up and help me look. =p
he can't TALK, but he can communicate in any number of ways that i understand. and getting his point across IS communication, whether it's using a human language or not.

and getting into the subject of rats, most people HATE the little things, but if you watch them without bias for a few minutes, you'll find that they're far more remarkable than people think. if a cagemate is sick or dying, the others will huddle with it to keep it warm. they'll bring food closer, especially things containting liquids. one of my rats went into a depression and died when his best friend died. =p he stopped eating and spent most of his time curled up in a ball until one day he was gone.
once i was bitten by a rat i had who was terrified of baths. =p his cagemates tried to keep him out of the cage altogether, and one of them took it upon himself to punish the biter. they wouldn't huddle with him, they wouldn't associate him. when the biter came towards them, they'd move away. they'd understood that he'd done something "not good." i wasn't really mad at him because i understood he was afraid of water, but had to be washed because he was gross beyond belief. =p the other rats were the ones who made a big deal out of it. =p eventually they accepted him again into their group but it was VERY interesting to watch. =p and ironically, after that, that rat, who'd always had a weird chip on his shoulder, became the biggest lap pet of them all. =p

and EVERYBODY knows about meerkats. =p and elephant moms who mourn their dead calves and remain at their graves until they almost starve to death, etc etc etc
what about that lioness featured on Mutual of Omaha that adopted a baby gazelle whose mother had been killed by another lion? =p
animals are capable of alot of things that are only 'impressive' because we have a tendency to devalue them.

I am continuously amazed at the depth of understanding and empathy show by critters of every size and shape.  Canines, being such highly social animals, will show their pack loyalty by being very brave in dangerous circumstances.

you see a video like that ....then read an article like this : http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/dekalb/stories/2008/12/03/dog_beat_sledgehammer.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab   No wonder I like my dog so much!

I wish I hadn't seen that video.

Kittin, thanks, I won't watch it then.
I actually like watching videos on YouTube of armed robbers in stores getting shot to death and hit with baseball bats by the clerks but I don't think I could watch this video either.
I'm an animal lover and you never see cats and dogs trying to rob or kill people.
My big tomcat "Bubba" is very affectionate with children and adults.

kittinSol -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 5:07:06 PM)

Whilst I hate seeing images of animals suffering at the hands of civilisation (the video was really sad), I'm weary of over-sentimentalising animals and their behaviour. Nature is brutal, and domesticated dogs sometimes attack human beings viciously. So, while it's touching to see dogs behave in what we perceive as a caring way, I also think it's important to keep things in perspective... human beings do not have the exclusivity on cruelty.

popeye1250 -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 5:21:46 PM)

Kittin, that's true and in the wild, animals (and that includes cats and dogs)
tear each other to pieces! That's just "nature."
I've seen Bubba tear into another tomcat in "his" territory and I mean they fought!
People just become very attached to their pets.

You should see what my wonderfully loving cat Cyrus does to the local wildlife... I shudder to think what he'd do to me were he a little bigger than he is :-) .

Not exactly true Popeye...

I have had a cat who stole jewelry and an African Grey Parrot with an earring fetish. Dogs will seal food if they think they can get away with it and haven't been taught better. One I knew used to steal clothes off  clotheslines and out of yards in my old neighborhood.

As for attacking and killing people..that sadly happens as well. Getting insurance in Florida if you have a Pit bull and several other breeds is nigh unto impossible. In some cases I know the person provoked the attack, but that is not always. Instinct can be strong in some animals and puppy mills turn out more insane, neurotic and genetically dangerous dogs than we would like to think with indiscriminate breeding. The Akita Rescue where we are interviewing potential additions to our family has a few that are biters. The breed is protective and very family oriented, but the ones who are biters are all puppy mill bred for the most part or badly abused. Adoption prospects for them are very low..and my heart breaks for them. I would take one of them in , in a heart beat, but Komodo won't tolerate another Male in the house...

Now if there is someone out there who would love a sweet white female Akita they have one there who is blind since birth. If I was not losing my own vision I would open my home to her, but two of us bumbling around the house might be too much of a comedy of errors for Master. They have another there who is champion bloodlines and perfect, but the person who owned her literally kicked every tooth out of her head. I would love to get my hands on that person for about 3 days..it would SOOO satisfy my sadistic need for a time.

http://www.arsf.org/ to add one of this noble breed to your heart and home...they need a strong person they can respect and love forever.

BlackPhx, well my Bubba wouldn't do any of that stuff, he knows I'd give him a good fuckin' beating if he did.
He HATES the clothes dryer!

RainydayNE -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/4/2008 10:28:20 AM)

i'm not "oversentimentalising" animals, just acknowledging aspects of them that people often don't.
just as nature can be "brutal," it can be other things. and pigeonholing nature as ANY one thing is just silly =p
my dogs have killed tons of rabbits, cats, squirrels, armadillos, whatever
that's just how they are. and i don't flip out and attempt to write excuses for that. but that's something that generally people UNDERSTAND about them. people like to play down the times when animals DON'T act like what we expect them to, because it's contrary to what we "know" about them. blah blah blah, etc etc etc

i get weary of that, as well.
nature is brutal, life is brutal, but it can be OTHER things. and refusing to acknowledge that is just as bad as only talking about the cute side of everything.

BlackPhx -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/4/2008 8:33:06 PM)

News 6 tonight showed the clip (after the hit not during it) and said that the dog had saved it's companions life. the dog that was hit is still alive and the locale is Chili. They ALSO put the dogs actions down to INSTINCT.

Instinct tells a dog not to go out there and potentially get hit or killed itself, it doesn't tell it how to avoid cars ( note how many are hit each year) or to drag the injured animal to the side of the road where it will be safe. THAT in my opinion is intelligence, loyalty and compassion.

Why do people have to put down other life forms actions to instinct instead of recognizing intelligence. We have been breeding dogs for intelligence and companionship as well as work for centuries...why the HECK should we deny they have gotten smarter ( well except for one grown collie I had who couldn't figure out how to go downstairs or downhill without it being ass over tea kettle).
