The stuff was sold through a French retailer (Conforama, national purveyor of unstylish furniture).

I blame the French. Bloody frogs.

It's a terrible tale.  I tried to cushion the blow.

Certainly possible, When I first started importing I bought a really great selling Formal Dining set from Yugoslavia( this was long before China took over the industry) and we sold the hell out of them. Turns out the wood was infested with a wood bore that would lay dormant for 12-16 months, then wake up ravenous. People started finding little piles of wood dust under their tables and chairs....what a cluster fuck that turned out to be. Luckily I was buying for a large corporation at the time and we were able to absorb the loss. I learned a REALLY VALUABLE lesson early on and never made the mistake again. The certifications required now are much stronger here in the states than most places and I have yet to experience any more issues.

Second time I've heard about this, and the second time its been raised on CM for discussion (17/10/08 "toys, milk and now sofas"), following it being featured on BBC's Watchdog in October.

Luckily the problem is being resolved as we speak, although not because of any action taken by the manufacturers to make their products safe, but rather because no one can afford a half price suite with four years interest free credit and nothing to pay for twelve months.

Give it a year and the Chinese will be complaining about the deadly goods theyre importing from sweat shops in the west.

There does seem to be a uptrend however in goods from China. The most recent involves Baby formula here int he US http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/26/AR2008112600386.html?hpid=moreheadlines this after numerous deaths in China of infants due to the same product contaminants. Odd thought but perhaps we will actually start manufacturing the products we use here for children with home grown supplies. Might help the economy, but more, might keep our children safer.

Oh, what's the point?  All is woe.  Woe, woe and thrice woe, I say unto thee.  Come, friendly meteor and obliterate the earth; you'd be doing us a huge favour.

Would you stop with the meteor wishes, I mean, if the planet gets hit with big rock all my stocks in the winter sports industry will be worthless.

How bout a nice supervolcano eruption setting off a nice long lasting volcanic winter so that ski resorts could be built say, lower rock piles of the sahara?

Why should you wish a calamity that would punish those of us who had the foresight to invest in stocks that would increase 1000 fold given the right climatic circumstances?

This is why when I'm shopping if something says "Made in China" I just won't buy it!
I don't want that shit in my house!
