Several practices mentioned involve pH balance - of the hair, the scalp, and your hair products. For example, the higher the pH balance of a shampoo is, above the natural level of you scalp, the more detergent it is. The more detergent it is, the more likely it is to make your scalp compensate by producing more oil. Conditioner that's too low in pH, is likely to be heavy. Apple cider vinegar has about the same pH balance as is healthy to your scalp - you may have heard of the acid mantle, on your hair and skin. If you use products that have been properly pH balanced, and/or if you restore the acid mantle right away, with a diluted apple cider vinegar (not white vinegar) rinse, it has a good effect on your scalp and hair. Some people maintain that it doesn't matter whether you strip the acid mantle, when you wash your hair or skin, because within minutes, your body's restoring it. But it has definitely been my experience that the long term effects are different, between using well-pH balanced products and using those that are not.
