YourhandMyAss -> My new internal hard drive came today! (12/4/2008 2:41:16 AM)

I am so fucking happy my old drive was so fucked up and full and junky that my pc just got to where it was so slow and it wouldn't shut down or run properly.

I am vowing here, today, not to junk this new one up with tons of useless stuff, and even if the stuff is usefull a lot of it will be stored soley on my external or my thumb drive and accessed from there.

What did you do with the old one?

Did you know you can format it and use it as a secondary drive?

It's a slaves slave drive* hehehe*

I've replaced hard drives twice now, the old one became the slave drive and the new one a master, and now the master drive is now the second slave drive.

It'll stay in my tower as a back up and as storage.

I download as few programs as possible.  AOL is the worst for jamming up your computer...and Yahoo isn't much better.  I refuse to download either of them to my machine.  Instead, I go to aol.com to check my mail....you can also access aim chat through that, or use meebo.com to chat via yahoo, aol, msn, and a couple of others.

Also, run a defrag on your computer every so often, and clean out temporary internet files.  I find that combination always speeds things up.

Yup yup yup. I failed to do that regularly with my old pc's but I am going to try to be vigilant about dumping all my stored cookies every week at the end of the week, even though that means remembering passwords for everything and manually logging back in , but that's ok.

I use yahoo instant messenger infact Ip ositivly love it. Used to use aim to and msn, but aim got really screwed up one time and I never could fix it and I haven't missed it since. And actually I would probably refuse to get it back on my pc now if any one ever asked me to use it.

Was free space the problem ? If not you did not need a drive really. You could have done what I call a sidestep install. Before you start, make a new folder right in C, and get everything out of my documents.

Then when windows asks what directory, I just chop it off from windows to window. You can then import your entire desktop and my documents into the new account. Just don't forget to put it all in a public directory, if you don't, you probably won't be able to access the files.

After that you can go to progam files and find the right exe files. Some of the programs will still run, some won't. Those that will, just put shortcuts either on the new desktop or in the start menu. The ones that won't run will need to be reinstalled. All the accounts will be in a directory called documents and settings. That is where you have to get them out of before reinstalling windows.

Unfortunately I am one who really needs a new drive, it runs fine, but is running out of space. I could simply clone it to a bigger drive, a reinstall would only make the problem worse. Actually once that's done, I can download again.

Defrag is overrated for increasing speed. My OS is in the middle of the drive, and I have never defraged, yet this ol 433 celeron runs the pants off of quite a few P4s I have seen. Somethines it is not so much what you put into a PC, it's what you put on it.

Defragging is however beneficial to the drive itself, it doesn't have to work as hard. I have never noticed a big difference in speed after defragging. Same with the internet cache.  I used to do it, but found that there was very little difference. Perhaps other drives are not as fast as the Diamondmaxes I use, so I guess as with anything alse, YMMV.

Nope, someone got a virus onto my system and it was crashing and very very slow and my ocmputer no longer functioned like it was supposed to, it wouldn't shut off and I had to lean on the power button and force it to shut down  to even be able to shut it off everything I did to try to fix it including virus clean up and unburdening my har d drive a bit failed to help and in fact made it worse.

I tend to get external HDDs and computers with small internal HDDs thus I can move from one PC to another with ease.

I don't like moving about, this computer sits on my desk and is always on my desk, since it's a desk top. I like having everything I need in one simple place with everything else.
