I've had about 3 in the last month and a half (yes I'm seeing my doc ASAP) and I'm on the pill and have a weakened immune system. So it makes sense that I'm getting them quite a bit. Does anyone know if there are certain forms of the pill that are more likely to cause yeast infections? I really don't want to get off of it, but if it means I'll be dealing with those damn infections as much as I am, I really have no other choice. Any help is much appreciated! Oh and does yogurt really work as well as people say?
Thanks,
~fp

I had the same problem when I was on the pill - constant yeast infections. I was on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen, Ortho-Cyclen, Yasmin and one other I can't remember the name of, and had problems with all four.

Do you take a lot of antibiotics because of your weakened immune system? I noticed that whenever I went on antibiotics while on the pill, I would immediately get a yeast infection. When off the pill, antibiotics only rarely give me yeast infections.

I would religiously eat yogurt, drink cranberry juice, take acidopholis pills and none of it ever seemed to make a difference, but that might have just been me.

Good luck! I know what a pain these things can be. I hope your doctor can help you find a good solution.

Eat yogurt, drink LOTS of cranberry juice...those two combined I have found work wonders. I never got them while on the pill though, I had yeast infections throughout my whole pregnancy. Those two worked at getting rid of them faster than anything else did.

I use to get yeast infections every time I was on antibiotics. The treatment for the yeast infection would give me a bacterial infection. The antibiotics for the bacterial infection would give me a yeast infection. Round and round I would go until I started to eat yougurt. I now eat yogurt everyday and when on antibiotics I eat two things of yogurt everyday. I have not had to deal with a yeast infection since I started to do this.

Eating yogurt, taking acidophilus, drinking cranberry jiuce, wear cotton underwear (if you wear any), allow that area to be open to air as much as possible is best, blowdry it with a cool setting after bathing, and a rare vinegar/water douche. Going to your doctor and getting one of the one dose pills to help get rid of it, combined with the other should help keep the infections away. Bathing after sexual play, when you have gotten very lubricated is also a great idea.

Not to get all gross here, but you may want to have a gyno check it. If you have a bacterial infection, it requires different treatment from yeast. But usually, if you have yeast, ick, you know it.

those little diflucan pills can do wonders, and are so much nicer to deal with than the alternatives. all the cranberry juice in the world won't prevent urinary tract infections and yeast infections in all people, especially if, as you mentioned, your immune system is weakened. i'd speak to your doctor about how the various forms of the pill might affect you while you're getting that diflucan prescription. also know that male partners can reinfect you.

hope this helps. i wish you well.

I discontinued the pill several different times because of persistant yeast infections. A friend of mine swears by soft gel tabs of garlic inserted at night and says it cures the problem after a few days. Also, you can try acidophilis tablets, with one inserted in the morning and one in the evening. It boosts the benign and supresses destructive bacteria, allowing the body to maintain a healthy bacterial balance. That is what did it for me! I wish you the best of luck with this...

hi fp- I used to get yeast infections all the damn time when I was on the pill. It was one of the (many) reasons I stopped using hormonal BC, actually.
However, what worked for me, eventually, was:
I cut out sugar and alcohol as much as possible from my diet. Took six acidophilus pills every day. Used those garlic pills- or if I couldn't use them, a clove of garlic with a few lines scored into it with a knife works too, pop it on overnight but tie a string through it so you'll be able to get it out the next morning! However, that can sting like crazy when you're already really sore, so if it's that bad, I'll mix a few drops of tea tree oil with some olive oil. You can soak a tampon in it and leave it in overnight, or else, if you have a cup like a mooncup or a divacup (which is better, anyway- tampons can aggravate YIs no end) pour the oil mix into that and insert the cup overnight. It won't aggravate it and it'll help a bunch. I tend to d that once or twice a month, anyway, just as a preventative measure, and I haven't gotten a YI in almost a year.
Oh, and if it's really driving you crazy, really salty water will help soothe it- try half filling a bath with warm (not hot) water and add a packet or two of salt.

Yeast thrives on sugar. Eliminating sugar and alcohol from the diet is very effective in reducing/eliminating yeast. A mild white vinegar/water douche will relieve the itching and discomfort (it actually kills yeast). Some anti-biotics/medications can encourage yeast by upsetting the natural balance and killing the "good" flora. Something else to consider is that yeast is in the air and seeks warm moist places on the body to live (ie the mouth and vagina). Like trichomoniasis it is also passed back and forth between you and your partner, so it is helpful if both partners are treated.

Note that yogurt contains sugar, so it is actually feeding the yeast infection, not killing it. Most cranberry juice also contains sugar. White Vinegar is actually the most effective home treatment. If the infection is advanced it is best to consult your doctor for treatment, as well as advising him/her as to the frequency of your experiences.

Some basic and very effective tips include washing/drying partner before intimate interaction (oral or vaginal), and after. A mild white vinegar rinse is effective following oral contact.

Ahh yes, yeast infections. Crotch rot. That burning itching dripping fungus that attacks the very area we hold most dear.

I never used to get yeast infections. Then after the birth of my first I got a series. Once a month, like clockwork.

I was never exactly sure the first day. I mean, I had a sort of itchy achy feeling radiating from between my legs. But then the burning began. The itching became unbearable, panties were an impossibility, and I was strongly motivated to get to a grocery store.

I could never decide if I wanted to lie back with my legs spread and shove an ice cube up there or floss with a burlap rope.

My pharmacist acquaintance cautioned me against continuing to use over the counter stuff like Monistat if I had so many infections in a short time. The basic premise was I could actually be using my vagina to breed my very own form of Super Yeast that would eventually be vulnerable only to kryptonite and the music of Barry Manilow. I couldn’t get into the doctor for at least a week. I asked for alternatives. He suggested yogurt as well.

Really?

Umm, how exactly would you get the yogurt in there?

I pondered this. I suggested I could make little yogurt popsicles and shove them inside. But PharmGuy wasn’t sure if freezing would kill the cultures. The other scenarios I came up with seemed very messy or involved fancy equipment I did not own. Also, how long would you leave it? It is sort of warm down there and experience has taught me if yogurt sits out too long it spoils.

He then suggested garlic, wrapping some open cloves in a cheese cloth and inserting overnight. Beautiful. This would have the added benefit of keeping vampires out from between my thighs while I slept. Always an issue. Add some tomatoes and pasta and you have a dining experience waiting to happen.

Then he gave me these tablets called Yeast-Ease or something similar. You took the entire huge bottle, multiple tablets a day, until it was gone and it was supposed to be a long term solution. I did, and have not had a yeast infection since. That was seven years ago.

I remember another thread about yeast infections and I think that Plantlady had some sort of tampon yogurt cure. Maybe she'll stop by and share it again.

All good ideas. I haven't had one in ages (knock wood). Garlic, acidophillis and the vinegar douche worked wonders for me. I've started eating garlic in almost everything I cook now, so that may have something to do with the lack of relapse. Also the fact that I haven't taken antibiotics in well over a year probably helped too.

Anytime I know I'm going to have to take any kind of medication that might upset my natural balance, I start supplementing with garlic capsules well ahead of time. They are pretty inexpensive and have other health benefits as well.

Another thing: try to catch it early - don't wait until you're full blown, otherwise you'll suffer longer. You probably know your body well enough to notice when stuff doesn't feel quite right down there. You might notice a different odor when you go to the bathroom or change clothes, or feel irritation when you wash. As always, check with your MD to make sure you're okay, but a lot of of the homeopathic solutions that others have mentioned typically won't hurt as a first line of defense.

Good luck!

Oh all great ideas! Thanks a bunch! I'll definitely have a go at some of em. Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried using boric acid filled tablets? That was also suggested to me and I'm wondering if you guys have had any luck with it. Thanks again for all the great responses!
Finally starting to feel some relief,
~fp

Make sure you treat your partner with anti-yeast cream at the same time, and abstain for another few days after your symptoms are gone:  they [any sex] can carry yeast and not know it, so it can ping-pong back and forth if you only treat yourself.

Clean your toys as directed.

Don't use recycled toilet paper, which is bleached and extremely harsh.  Until you feel better, use the softest paper with plenty of clean water.    Workplaces tend to use the cheapest, most industrial and yeast-friendly t-paper, so you might have to carry some of the right stuff with you.

Good luck
