temptressofsouls -> Shingles and Impact play (12/6/2008 11:27:04 AM)

Before anyone says anything: I HAVE BEEN TO THE DR.

Okay, so right now, i've got this itchy, painful, achey, throbbing rash on the right side of my back thats curving around to my front. Had it for about 5 days, progressively worse and progressively more painful by the day. Doc tells me its probably dermatitis, puts me on enough steroids to choke a small pony and says if it doesnt clear up in 5 days to come back because if it hasnt by then, its probably shingles. Ive had chicken pox, Im under a ton of stress, and I work in health care. Im almost convinced its shingles.

My question is, have any of you subs/slaves had shingles, or does anyone know/own/played with a sub/slave who has? Im not talking about an active case, but they say shingles can reappear due to stress or injury, and im wondering if heavy impact play (flogging, caning, etc) would cause an outbreak of shingles once someone who has had it previously?

Thanks for your help.

sirsholly -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/6/2008 12:09:07 PM)

i seriously doubt impact play will bring on a case of shingles without other factors involved such as a compromised immune system, but it is hard to say for sure.

I will tell you that you have my total sympathy. I have never had them but have been around others who have and i know it is agony.

Please take care and let us know how you are doing.

((((a very gentle hug)))))

MasterSgiandubh -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/6/2008 12:41:28 PM)

Not very likely.  When healthcare professionals mention stress, we usually mean when the body comes under severe conditions.  A good Dom or Master can certainly induce severe body stressors but it pales in comparison to the human body succumbing to a streptococcus infection (i.e. strep throat) or staph infection.  Emotional stress has been linked but only in as an adjunctive to other stressors in the system usually infections or autoimmune responses.  A good beating is unlikely to trigger an outbreak.
I agree with you that it certainly sounds like herpes zoster has come back to haunt you.

Thank you both for your input. Unfortunately last night I got clammy, the chills, the shivers, and just felt "off." Wish there was something I could take for the itchiness. He said benadryl of course but it makes me sleepy, so i cant take that while I work, and I work shifts like 9a-9p or 2:30p-12a. Im going out of my mind with the itchies :(

perhaps an oatmeal bath or an oatmeal hydrocortisone 1% cream? It is recommended for kids with Chicken Pox and Shingles is the same virus.

I cannot believe you are able to work. You are one tough woman!!!!

daddysliloneds -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/7/2008 7:52:48 AM)

it's my honest belief that shingles that are under the surface of the skin already, sometimes just need a little extra push to come to the surface, and that impact play could possibly be the cause of it coming to surface now.  why?  well because i have had basil skin cancer cut off of many parts of my body, and according to the doctor, when i was pregnant, and my belly stretched more, as well as other parts of my body, many of them came to the surface that would have otherwise not.  just as they do when i tend to do a lot more breast bondage, impact play or corseting.  sometimes things that are below the surface just need a little push to come out when they would normally never surface at all.

while the play is not the cause of the shingles, or in my case, the basil cell cancer, it can push these things to surface that under normal circumstances would have stayed below the surface and in a type of stagnant stage.

Herpes zoster, Herpes complex and Herpes simplex are easily exacerbated by any strong emotional experience.

It doesn't take a serious staph infection or some other exotic auto immune challenge to trigger an outbreak, regardless of what American Doctors and/or Nurses might tell you.

An emotional, physical or psychological climax of any kind can easily cause Herpes that are dormant to activate within 8 to 24 hours.

Even a vanilla orgasm that results in tears of emotion is sufficient to trigger an outbreak.

Feelings of depression, sadness, grief can do the same thing, as can feelings of euphoria and joy.

If an impact BDSM session results in a cathartic response that includes feelings of love, fear, tension, anticipation, drop, intense pain, orgasm, crying, release or any of the myriad of emotions that factor into WIITWD you can positively expect a herpetic outbreak almost overnight.

That includes lip blisters, skin blisters, canker sores, the eruption of subcutaneous lipomas that form from intramuscular herpes outbreaks, blisters or lesions that can erupt in the sinuses or bronchial tubes, and yes, shingles.

While steroids help reduce the inflammation post symptomatically, a preventive dose of Valtrex either daily or several days prior to a planned session can help stop the dormant virus from travelling along the nerves to the surface before they ever leave the axion of the nerve it's residing in - the proteins in Valtrex or acyclovir or similar anti virus treatments can stop the virus from reaching the nerve endings where it causes such excruciating pain.

Furthermore, contrary to popular opinion, you don't just 'catch Herpes once' and then 'have it anyway'.

While it is true that once infected, the virus remains in your body the rest of your life, it is also true that anytime a rash or canker results in fluid blisters that pop open, whether on a lip, or in the mouth, on the genitals, or on the skin, or on the cornea of the eye, tongue, gums, roof of the mouth - any mucous membrane or any nerve ending in the body can be the site of an eruptive lesion - anytime the virus erupts, thousands of active virus units erupt along with the body fluid from the blisters and those units can and do cause new cases to occurr over and over again between partners.

In other words, even though you already have the virus in your system, you can 'catch' newer forms of Herpes again, and again, and again, and again, every time you are exposed.

Shingles, for most people, do not erupt as easily, but they can be triggerd by the same conditions as any other Herpes virus.

While steroids help reduce the inflammation post symptomatically, a preventive dose of Valtrex* either daily or several days prior to a planned session can help stop the dormant virus from travelling along the nerves to the surface.

Valtrex/Famvir/Zovirax/acyclovir or similar anti virus treatments can stop the virus from reaching the nerve endings where it causes such excruciating pain - IF you have it in your bloodstream before the prodome, or erupting lesion, begins to form.

See your doctor about a prescription for Valtrex/Famvir/Zovirax/acyclovir or other anti viral treatment to help shorten the duration of your shingles outbreak.

Talk to your doctor about taking Zovirax or Valtrex for three to five days when you know you will be actively involved in impact play.

A daily dose of Valtrex/Zovirax for several months, several years, or life, may be in order for you.  See what your doctor recommends and then use your own best judgement based on the frequency of outbreaks.

If you talk to your doctor and you are given a one time prescription for a 5 to 10 day dose of acyclovir*, you don't have to silently accept your doctor's premise about your condition - remember your doctor doesn't know the stress you are subjected to by your activities.  You can ASK your doctor to prescribe the level of protection that best suits your needs.  I would suggest a 10 day dose to be taken 5 days prior to and after a session.  If that doesn't work or if you session actively all the time, you'll need daily doses to prevent outbreaks.

**Taking high doses of L-lysine can help mitigate an outbreak and can help shorten the duration of an outbreak BUT it CANNOT stop the virus from spreading and reproducing in your system.  Only acyclovir or similar anti viral prescription can do that for you.

In the case of shingles as opposed to herpetic blisters, talk to your doctor, take the Valtrex* (or whatever is prescribed) for the 15 to 30 day treatment they usually prescribe, and try another session.  If you have yet another outbreak of shingles - it's time to get serious about preventive doses on a regular basis.

Be proactive and take care of yourself.

All the best,

TexasMaam

Thank you all, again. Im still feeling like utter crap. Itchy, in pain, shivery. The doc was 80% sure it wasnt shingles, so I have to go back on thursday and convince him it is. He's an urgent care doc; I have no insurance right now but will be getting it in January, so if it is shingles, when I get a primary care doc i will talk to them about my activities and see if I might need to be on preventative outbreak meds.

I guess right now is just a waiting/toughing it out game...though truthfully I want to just crawl into bed and stay there til its over. [sm=goodnight.gif]

temptressofsouls...

have you ever heard of the old time method of using cooled human urine on your shingles?   I knew an old German woman who swore by it when her shingles re-occured every few years or so.  It not only numbs the pain (must be the amonia) but eases itching and rids of the rashes sooner.

temptressofsouls -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/12/2008 5:18:18 AM)

No, hadnt heard that-someone my gram knows mentioned mixing turpentine, camphor, and whiskey.

At any rate they swear its not shingles ("too young") but have no idea what it is or how to help me.

came4U -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/12/2008 5:53:35 AM)

Is it impetigo (Staphylococcus aureus)?? Since you work in healthcare, have you recieved any manditory vaccines recently (past few months) that could be giving you a delayed reaction?  Recent allergy shots?  Insulin injections?

I am just getting over a case of shingles.

I have had them, and unfortunatly chickenpox numberous times. *sighs*

Stress, heat, and things like flogging/caning can and will bring out a new set of the buggers.

Some notice that after hot baths the submerged parts sometimes will have them spring up along the nerve lines.

Stress makes this worse as the virus is more likely to come out then due to your body's immune system being lowered due to the stress.

You can not strike the area, or do any sort of play while you have an outbreak. they will pop open and spread. Not to mention it is so highly contagious that you can pass it on to anyone. Even if they do not get it.. it will carry on them, and onto people who can.

This is why the old medieval curse of " A pox apon you!" was such a dreaded one.

Good luck!

Gwyn

If you have insurance have your Dr. proscribe Valtrex 1 gm tablets 1 a day for 14 days.

It is a super drug that diminshes the time of infection from 2 weeks or more to just a few days.

Continue to take them even if it goes away.

A lovely ER Dr. showed me that these work on Shingles and Chicken pox and ever since then I have a standing order for them durring my shingles from hell times.

Good luck.

Also Calahist ( Clear lotion ) is your friend. As well as oatmeal baths. Take a container of oat meal.. ( the cheapo stuff) and grind down in a blender, or coffee grinder 1 cup at a time for your baths. take a warm but not hot bath with the 1 cup of oatmeal in it. It will do you wonders. Even if it is only dermititis.

nobody is too young for shingles, my ex hubby had them at 23.  that bs about it being only an old folks' ailment is pure bullshit.  sounds like your doc needs to go back and take a few classes, update his medical knowledge.  and as for the itchies, calamine lotion, maybe?  try caladryl, it has benedryl in the lotion.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/12/2008 5:18:06 PM)

I've seen kids as young as 7 with shingles, so unless you are 6, then it could be shingles - and frankly, sounds like it. [:'(]

porcelain26 -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/12/2008 8:02:58 PM)

Last I knew, steroids weren't prescribed for viral infections as it makes them worse. But perhaps my information is faulty.

mummyman321 -> RE: Shingles and Impact play (12/13/2008 10:09:53 AM)

I have had Shingles twice in the past. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes Chicken pox. which is Herpes Zoester. The #1 cause of Shingles is typically due to a weakened ammune system. I seriously doubt impact play caused your shingle to appear. I also would not do any impact play while you have the outbreak. Also, steriods are given to those who have bad outbreaks. The steriods reduce inflamation. Learn more at Webmd.com or the Mayoclinic.com.

No shots of any kind in over a year.

Im still convinced its shingles, and the pamplets for the meds they gave me said not to take/tell your doctor if you have shingles/chicken pox, but at the time it was the only course of action i had. They seem to be slightly better-they said if im not better in another week they'll run blood tests. They can kiss my ass-thats another $200 in Dr's visits plus extra money for the labs....

I'll be getting health insurance next month and going to a better doc-if the rash pops up again i'll explain my history and ask for Valtrex.
