Why Aunt Pashe is an uncle Today where I work the students were reading Upfront Magazine a New York Times publication. They read 2 main articles for discussion and then choose a third - also for class discussion. Today one of the classes chose Why Aunt Pashe became an Uncle by Dan Bilefsky. "By Tradition, when a family in Albania lost all its men, a woman could swap gender roles and become the family patriarch" It later states "They were not ridiculed but accepted in public life, even revered". Thought it was an interesting article to share - but the link at www.upfrontmagazine.com only allows the online readers to see the current issue. The issue this article is published in is the December 1 & 15, 2008. The class discussion was divided by students who thought it was interesting but confusing and the others that thought it was wrong. When I pushed in discussion why they thought it was wrong, they didn't spout religion - but sited that a person shouldn't be limited to certain jobs based on gender. ( A point made about many of these Albanian F2M) I just thought I would share - and perhaps trigger a conversation - let the collarme world know to perhaps mark the site for a quick but interesting read. thanks, jani
