mozartsfuneral -> Masters broken back (12/9/2008 12:41:49 PM)

greetings everyone,

Master was in a car accident three years ago, and got a broken back as a result...He never got surgery because His job requires Him to do heavy lifting and where the break is afraid of ending up in a wheelchair. What can i do to make Him more comfortable when the weather effects Him? it breaks my heart to see Him in pain, and i want to ease it for Him, is there any other alternative?

I have a very hard time believing that he broke his back in a place where surgery would put him in a wheelchair, yet he's still able to do a job which requires heavy lifting. That makes no sense whatsoever. Aside from that...alternate ice and heat, and massage.

No no, i said He's afraid that if He gets surgery He'll end up in a wheelchair. It's one of His biggest fears...i suppose 50 - 60lbs isn't heavy lifting but it's heavy enough to aggravate his back
esp. during weather changes...but i'll suggest it to Him, and prod Him nicely to see a doctor.

aromatherapy does wonders at times, though I agree with porcelain that I am a bit puzzled about the situation as such...

probably needs to have that surgery the longer he goes with out it the more of a chance he will become wheelchair bound.

i am desperately trying to get Him to think that surgery is a good idea, and i promised that we will get Him the best surgeon, but He's still being stubborn.

Men.

Can you look into who the best doctors are that specialize in this?
Back surgery is nothing to mess around with, and I don't blame him for holding it off. (I used to work for a chiropractor)
If you want help with research, contact me, and I will help you.
Good luck.

Thank you Christina,
i will be looking into it and i'll help Him any way i can...i've seen what not doing back surgery can do to a person and He's so young to be in this state...( He's 26 ) of pain.
:-) Tomorrow, i will do a search!!!

warmest regards,

jayelle

Are you kidding me?  Wait.. what IS he doing to treat his condition besides avoiding surgery?  Is he seeing any doc for this at all?  Is he going to therapy?  Is he consulting with someone on what his options are?

I'm sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine, because I see this kind of thing every day.  I work in a chiropractor's office.  First of all, let your guy know there may be alternatives besides surgery, but he needs to SEE A PROFESSIONAL to find out what options may be available to him based on his condition.  I recommend at least considering chiropractic as an option, not because I am biased but because I've SEEN the results.  It may not be the solution for everyone, but it's certainly worth checking into.

Go in for a consultation(often, they are free) and find out what course of treatment they suggest. Ask questions.  And look for someone who does physical therapy or rehab as part of the services they provide.  Personally I would suggest avoiding chiro's who are strongly pushing supplements(we dont'), as I think he needs *rehab*, not vitamins.

Otherwise, get him to the family doc to consult on the condition and what options he suggests.  Ask for referrals.

Sorry, but ignoring this type of problem is just stupid.  :-(   I wish you both luck.

cookie slave,
i know!! i know! i've only known Him a year, and every chance i get i bug Him about it. i didn't know that
chiropractors could help a broken back, but that's a good idea...and i'm going to drug Him and club Him
and then drag Him to the doctors if i have to...

I had back surgery.  I had been in a car accident and my pelvic bone was broken in 5 places.  What no one realized right away is that the spinal cord actually broke away from the pelvic bone and when it healed it did so at an angle.  After 20 years of increasing pain, which had been diagnosed as arthritis, it was finally discovered that my back had healed incorrectly.  I needed to have the spine broken and reset.

I talked to my doctor about my fear of not being able to walk if I had back surgery.  He made a funny noise and said that he doesn't understand why so many people worry about that because there is only a 2% of that happening.

I had the surgery and I am walking better than I have since my accident.  I chose a doctor who had done many similar surgeries and a hospital where they had patients come in beforehand and would talk with them about how to get around once they got home.  As long as he chooses a good doctor and hospital then things should go smoothly.  I have not had to take pain pills in over five years now when at one point I assumed it was the only way to get through life.  Based on my own experience I would definitely recommend getting it looked at and getting a good opinion, then a second opinion if he is concerned with the first one.

Thank you chamberqueen,
so many people are misinformed that you can in fact live with a broken back...and do things you normally would...just have increased pain. i will with your permission tell Him your story and see if that changes His mind. :-)

well, I worked with a client who broke his back, yes, (have been with him to the x-ray and was told that his vertebrae had a fracture). But I also worked with spinal cord injured clients, who then were...quite in trouble and needed a hell of a lot of care..as far as I know (I might be wrong) if you can still walk or not depends on the fact if the spinal cord is damaged or not and not "just" the back. In addition to such spinal cord injuries I recently got to know a person who got a spinal cord compression during/after an operation on his back...he was severely paralised and given up by doctors...now he is having aroma therapy and can now eat by himself again, can lift up his legs again on his bed and is more and more keen now to start physiotherapy...therefore...as far as I know, the "spinal cord" is the tricky part in our backs to watch for...(and i never believed much on weird things such as aroma therapy but this example keeps leaving me speechless...when I continue to see his progress...)

If he agrees to the surgery, find out what hospital he wants to use, call the hospital and ask for the surgery co-ordinating nurse. Ask her if she was going to have back surgery who she would go to. Trust me, the OR nurses know who is a good practictioner, and who they wouldn't send their dead dogs to.  Just a hint.

It's amazing what the medical professional has thought up and used over the years.

But i think we made some progress, He said that He would check into a few doctors and ask their opinion.

DavanKael -> RE: Masters broken back (12/10/2008 8:37:32 PM)

Sorry that that happened to him!  I've seen the results of a lot of messed up back surgeries.  I understand his reluctancce.
Haven't read all of the replies, so some of this may be repetitious:
**Heat (I just got a heated blanket and it works wonders for less pain on cold nights)
**Hot bath/shower/compresses
**Chiropractor (Be verrrrrrrrrry careful about who you use)
**Massage
**Acupuncture
**Biofeedback
**Relaxation exercises
**Guided imagery
**Medication
Best wishes,
  Davan

Years ago I broke my back. After healing I did physical therapy for a few months and then got myself hooked up with a really good chiropractor. It doesn't give me much trouble except on a few rare bad weather days. When it starts bugging me I get back into the chiropractor and within a few adjustments I'm feeling like new again. Be careful who you choose. If you go to see an M.D. they will likely prescribe pain meds and maybe therapy...because that is what they know. If you go to see a surgeon, they are going to recommend surgery because that is what they know. If you go to see a good chiropractor they will look at other options...but if they really feel you need surgery they won't mess with you. Avoid any chiropractor who tells you that he will "cure" you in "x" amount of visits. There is no way for them to tell how many visits you will need....you may feel great after just one or two....or it may take a few more. Also, I wouldn't recommend one that is pushing supplements.

mistoferin,
thank you very much for your feedback, it helps alot! :-)

Lockit -> RE: Masters broken back (12/11/2008 12:58:40 PM)

I always said I would not have surgery.  Never... lol  Until I started standing or walking and going straight down, no warning, just on the ground.  Legs gone... no wings... ouch!  Went to the hospital, they said nothing was wrong... went again, nothing wrong again... went again... oh god, you really can't walk...  Now you have a choice after all these years of problems and no one doing much except wanting me to swim in a pool far too cold and causing me more problems... or chiropractors that wouldn't touch me... you either get surgery so you can walk.. with some risk or you don't walk.

If you don't get the treatment you need things will become more complicated.

I can now walk.  I did well for a while... but because of life circumstances and doing things I shouldn't have done, but had no one else to do, I am back there.  Pain meds, waiting for someone to help find a solution.  Now I can't even get the meds I need because I moved and no doctor will see me for two months and even then they don't want to see me because of all the health problems.

Tell him that if you don't do this, things can get worse and then there is a whole world of problem issues to deal with that might not have solutions. I would suggest a chiropractor first.  They are not quick to priscribe anything or to do surgery and they can do amazing things.  The other's are a last resort in my opinion, but sometimes a nescessary one.

mozartsfuneral -> RE: Masters broken back (12/11/2008 2:24:47 PM)

Thank you Lockit. It's good to know that i'm not the only one who thinks that waiting and not doing anything about it is crazy. :-)
