When I was 20 I was dating this guy who made a huge fuss about how I should spend Christmas with him and not my family because it would show everyone how serious we were as a couple and blah blah blah. I finally gave in but on one condition; we would each pick one tradition from our respective families and follow it to the letter.

He chose to have the biggest, ugliest, most absurd tree ever. I hated that tree but you would never have guessed by my reaction. I played it up like it was the bestest tree I had ever seen in my entire life. I chose to have a Christmas stocking because as a kid it seemed like all the best stuff came in the stocking. The stocking was a HUGE deal. I teased him endlessly about how awesome his stocking was going to be. The man had never had one before. He teased me too and so I was pretty hyped up. On Christmas morning he has me sit on the couch with my eyes closed while he places this ridiculously heavy stocking in my lap.

The stocking was so heavy because he'd "stuffed" it with a 2 liter bottle of Coke.

An early christmas gift, this year... an electric knife...  I mean, yeah, I need one, but, that's like saying, "Here honey, have a vaccuum for christmas.  And a brand new broom too!"  I appreciate having it, as they are awesome for carving the turkey or ham, but come on...  as a christmas gift?  *HEADDESK*  After springing for the shit I got for the others here, and actually putting thought behind it, there better be something pretty fucking awesome (and not even necessarily expensive) in my stocking this year...

Best gift ever, as a kid, it sucks, but as an adult, I WANT SOCKS!  I hardly have a foot fetish, in fact, more of a phobia, but new socks are just so damned nice, soft, comfy, and something I like NEVER remember to buy.  I mean, they're just socks, not often on my mind, but when I get that gift from my partner's mom, and there's a package of socks in it, YAY!

That and, whenever someone asks what I want for birthday/christmas/whatever, I just tell them, 'How about we all just go out to chinese?'  They don't seem to believe me.  To me there's nothing I could really want more (aside from that new Audi R8) than to sit around with all the people I care about over some good food, and just eat and talk and forget about life outside of the table for a couple hours.  THAT is what I fucking want!  When I say I want that, there's a reason!

I have given socks to fashionably challenged male acquaintences who wore white gym socks with black dress pants and black dress shoes before.  Just because.

Hahaha, they sound as bad as me!  I'll wear my black Chuck Taylors with everything, even a tuxedo, just because they're comfy, and, really, basic black goes with everything anyway, yes?

Finances being what they are, and us all being adults with stuff...we decided to exchange only books or CDs, or other things we already had that the other person would like.  I carefully located a 1944 Oxford Dictionary - a miniature one - in my collection and wrapped it for Mom...and so on and so forth until I had chosen a very special something for Mom and Bro and Frenchy had chosen something for each of them, and we wrapped them elaborately.  We got to the place where we were to meet, and an hour late, mother and brother show up, and what they have is bags of random crap neither of us could ever want - outdated philosophy text books...murder mysteries with coffee stains on the covers.  Nothing was wrapped and they didn't really have in mind who each thing was for - they just foisted off what should have been donated to the library.  It made me feel even broker and poorer and more screwed up than I had before I got there.  It had been such a pain in the ass to even plan this get-together, drive all that way, and have it feel like a slap in the face.

Frenchy and I have pared it down to just filling eachother's stockings.  We each try to make it fun and kooky and some of the best things I have ever gotten came that way.  I pick-up something small and fun for a couple people I love when I can afford it.

I happen to like that type of Punk Rock look.  In my closet are 2 pairs of black Chuck Taylors, 1 in cloth for summer and 1in leather for winter.  (As a typical female if a shoe style fits well I get more than one pair!)

this is a tradition in my family.  anyone under 18?  socks and underwear.  automatically.  normally white athletic socks, and then the silliest boxers i can find or christmas themed sleep pants.  wolf got silk boxers....which lived in his drawer.  he decided he'd rather go commando.

Oh...nice socks or those super-fluffy booties for winter.  They keep the toes and feet toasty warm and cozy.

Even better, one bottle of baileys and one of kahlua, put one bottle in each slipper :)  I'd think that was an amazing gift!

I can understand the childhood disappointments, and some of the adult ones, but some of these seem a bit nit-picky to me. (and perhaps a bit ungrateful) I'd rather receive the corny calendar, and the itchy sweaters and know my family is still here, and really mean well...

Oh good grief blushes lets not start judging anyone........... the post is about the worst gifts..... not about how some don't value being thought of even though they were given the worst gifts.

Sorry.
Can't help it.
I have a very small family, and it's quite possible (probable even) that I could lose my dad, my uncle, and my grandmother (who raised me as her own) over the next year.
Sooner, rather than later, for my dad and my uncle.
There will only be a few of us left after that.
I would love to have them here next year to give and receive corny or silly gifts.

Blushes, I understand that your personal loss is painful to you. We have ALL been through holidays that were not ideal due to family issues. We have all whined, in our time, and felt that the commercial crap of the holidays was shallow and rediculous.

But yanno, thats really not what this thread is about. It wasn't meant to try and solve the world problems or even make a crappy pair of shoes any more important than it was. It's just a bit of fun and laughter at the past.

And, the reality is that for some of us......cold hearted as it is.....losing a few family members would not be a grand tragedy. So, it can be a bit difficult to empathize.

Racquelle books are an awesome gift and can be so personal. My best friend and I of twenty plus years always include some kind of book in our gift giving to each other. My mom always sends me cookbooks (I love to cook)but more importantly she always personalizes each book by writing something to me in it or next to a recipe. I often don't find the notes until I'm using the cookbook and it's like a surprise all over again.

Not mine but worth a mention. One year someone got my Uncle a can of Zippo lighter fluid. He got a chuckle and said that he has a butane.

OK I know it's the thought that counts, but what kind of thought was that ?

I have never received a bad gift.

Any gift, when given with the best of intentions; is a gift worth cherishing.

Then I must be seriously ungrateful: to this day, and nearly twenty years later, I still haven't forgiven my oldest friend for giving me a pair of these cheesy monster slippers , you know, the acrylic ones with the stupid faces in the toe area, the ones that give you static and are really uncomfortable?

I don't usually bear grudges, but this one took the biscuit  .
