Status: offline 		I saw the Ob/Gyn doctor this morning. What I found interesting is the following she told me:
 
A woman enter's menopause between 48 and is finished by the time she is 55. She said if a woman is still bleeding at the age of 55, then she had better be talking to her doctor and get them to investigate why that is.
 
Loose stools on the day of bleeding -- Is caused by something called prostaglandin

-- which I think she says increases during menopause..but not sure since she was asking lots of other questions and giving answers when she said the word.
 
Fat stores female hormones. So...one more reason it is better to get your weight down so that you don't have as much trouble when you start to go through menopause.
 
Menstrual Migraines -- There is no help. Other than trying a variety of prescription drugs until you finish with up with menopause.
 
According to her, the only way to find out if you are menopausal or in peri-menopause is to do a cervical biospy where they clean you with iodine, then use a local to numb you, and then diliate you, and then scrape and cut lining out which gives you cramping and additional bleeding. Now the wait for two weeks to find out if I am or not and if not, then what else might be going on.

Status: offline 		I call bull shit on that one!  Who is this woman?  God?  Oh no, if she were god she wouldn't need to do some expensive stuff to check for menopause.  Bull shit on her ages.  Bull shit on the migraines. Bull shit on her testing.  I would get a second opinion and wouldn't let her scrape my shoe.

I did let her do the biospy. I am not sure about all the other things she said. I know that my menstrual migraines I haven't found anything that has helped. Taking magnesium seems to help with them but doesn't eliminate them.
The other symptoms I am going through I haven't found good answers to though I continue to search for things that will help.

Only SOME are so lucky. 
 I was. 
My sister got caught up in breast cancer during menopause which continued the menopause period.  My other sister had liver shapes of blood draining from her and she must have worn pads  7/24/352 x 2yrs before she has a hysterectomy at the same time they excised a basketball size fibroid, attached to all her girly parts ~ ovaries, tubes, uterus and vagina.  
My mom?  HRT and hysterectomy and still she has  problems.  She's 80.
 
Now I will NM.

Status: offline 		califsue, I have a disease that causes migraines.  I had to go to the hospital all the time with them.  I haven't been since 911 when I discovered that coffee... strong coffee helped me.  At the start and I do mean the start of a headache, I get the coffee.  I am in menopause and was at the time I found the coffee.  I am still going through it all.  I am fifty one now.  I had a hysterectomy when I was 29.  There is an old time medication they used to use for migraines called caffergot.  I hope I have the spelling right.  It was 100mg of caffiene and asprin.

I have also found that red or pink lense glasses help instantly to relieve just a bit.  Not the tinted lenses, but the actual lense being pink or red.  Get them on as soon as you detect a headache and they help.

I suffered migraines since my early twenties and the coffee was the only thing I could use including the caffergot because it made me sick.  At first Starbucks made about six dollars on me every day and now I have learned to just put ten cups of water in the pot and fill the basket full. 

Give it a try.  You never know.  It used to help my daughter, but doesn't now.  If it doesn't help fully add asprin and see if the two will work together.  I have never heard of what your doctor said, but had a doc decide I needed a test with scraping there and he was a quack and later lost his liscence.  You might want to check into what she said.  I am no expert by far, but that is something I am sure I would have read about in my multiple researches trying to help myself, not to mention the many, many doctors I have the pleasure to get to see so often.  Good luck!

The only way that would happen in my universe was if the doc thought there was cancer going on.  I think there are easier ways to determine hormone levels.  I know that blood tests over a 4 week period can help determine whether a woman is in menopause.  What you were through seems like an odd choice for diagnostic purposes.

I have had migraines since in my young 20's. I have had the brain scans, tried all sorts of different types of medication and nothing I have ever tried has truly helped other than letting them run their course. Aspirin tends to make my stomach upset. I am currently on prescription Midrin and 600 mg Motrin. In general that combination, along with taking 800 mg daily of magnesium I have seen a great deal of relief in their frequency and length and intensity. However, in November the first day I started bleeding it started and nothing but nothing would take care of it and actually called in sick to work, which I hate doing. A little over 24 hours from when it started, it finally started to subside. This month the week before they have already started so likely to be bad again this month.
 
I have looked up information on menopause and the information I read said a woman usually doesn't finish up until her late 50's..around 58.
 
It was the second visit to this office but the first time I have actually seen her. I was surprised by some of the information she gave me.
 
She also gave me several website links and was specific about the one she felt had the best information.
 
I didn't post to get flamed but know that is always a possiblity. I also know that she is not GOD, and that like most medical things, there are varying opinions.
 
Unfortunately, my 81 yr old mother...never had female problems to contend with and was finished with menopause by the time she was 54 or earlier. My second oldest sister just finished and she is 62. My oldest sister had hers taken out. Neither of my older sisters had any of the problems with their periods like I have had nor the one that just finished has she had problems. My second oldest sister did confirm that the biopsy she did is pretty normal for checking to see if someone is menopausal and she had it done several years ago.

Status: offline 		My grandmother was not fully menopausal until age 58. I'm almost 54 and still spot every few months. And no, I'm not going in for that kind of invasive stuff with a family history like mine.

I wouldn't do that. I would find a new doctor. I think this is an unnecessary procedure with no purpose in this case except raising her income. Without other symptoms, I doubt the requirement of such an invasive procedure. Get a second opinion.

Status: offline 		With regard to ages, I began menopause when I was 42 and I last bled a year ago, so now am past menopause, I am 47. It all happened during a very difficult relationship and breakup, (yes it took that long...groans) so the physical and psychological problems were the lesser of the two evils.

Modern blood tests are now very sensitive and will show hormone levels to indicate what stage you are at, ie peri to post menopause. none of this probably helps you, but the age a woman goes through menopause varies, no hard and fast rules.

This is true, a simple blood test would work.  However it would not work if you were a money hungry doctor who just wants to perform tests to get money.  I've ran into too many of them in recent years.

Anyway, for what its worth I ran into a 70 something lady at the doctors office a few months back.  Asked her how long menopause lasted for her.  She told me 30 years.  She said hell ended 2 years ago.
I think there is something to be said for supplements..etc

Status: offline 		Just a note, all of this menopause stuff doesn't have to be hell. It can be pretty uneventful. Not minimalizing how difficult it is for some, just not all.

Aside from some hot flashes and moodiness, I pretty much skated right through it.

Cafergot was caffeine and ergotomine, which made for problems if you took too much; it can cut down your peripheral circulation (the cure is alcohol, believe it or not.)

old parents is not for the faint of heart. I have had a blood test last year which did not show
anything. As far as the doctor being money hungry, it did not cost me anything other than my co-pay.
She works for a HMO...so they very seldom like to perform anything additional. Hell..when I was in a car accident in April 2007 it took over six months before they would finally refer me to a hand specialist and almost a year before they finally would do an MRI on my hand/thumb and the complaint I had related to that which resulted in surgery to repair a torn tendon in my right thumb. Every woman's journey through this time of life varies person to person. I know someone at work who has been having problems and her doctor kept trying all sorts of meds, the doctor ignored her calls and she ended up in ER with an appendix problem that she related to her going through the change. I would have changed doctors but she refused and just lived with the pain and problem.

Status: offline 		The endometrial biopsy is to look for uterine cancer. It is worth a check in abnormal bleeding. Uterine cancer is awful. It happens and so the test. I had one and thought it hurt for a minute. Not anywhere near some of the other pain I endure for fun. Anyway, I wouldn't seek it out, but if you are having irregular periods, have one so you can stay here with us. I am going to get rid of the uterus soon. I cannot wait to have no period anymore. I am perimenopause and sick of wearing a pad,just in case the red sea decides to part that day.

Status: offline 		I am on the pill for my endometriosis, and can stay on it forever (or at least until I am done with menopause).  I am in utter ecstasy when I skip a period... but in my family, menopause finishes LATE.

I am adding my voice to the DITCH this doctor chorus.  The bloodwork for hormone levels is very simple indeed, and way cheaper than a biopsy.

Status: offline 		I had a total hysterectomy in my mid-40's. Thought i breezed through that, no hot flashes, etc, but it hit me 8 years later. My Dr. told me that happens occassionally. Now i am dealing with the migraines, hot flashes and everything that goes with it. I am 57.

Status: offline 		oceanwynds -- Sorry to hear you are now suffering 8 yrs later. I didn't know that could happen.
 
LadyH -- Actually because of my migraines I am not a candidate for the pill even the low dose. I had tried a low dose pill several years ago and went without a period for one year as I was on them all the time. The problem was after about 3 months my migraines got worse and worse. Finally I told the doctor and he took me off o them.
 
secretsub -- Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is true I have several different things going on which I chose not to share.
