FR--Anytime I get shots in my arm...use a warm compress and take some tylenol to help with the bumps and swelling.

My sister says to ask them to get them in the arm that you use the most.
If you are right handed get them in that arm since using the arm will help reduce the swelling and such things.

Many injections, the medication is not isotonic, and irritates the nerves, giving the burning sensation. Certain medications cause an antigen response by the body, resulting in inflammation and discomfort, quite common with vaccines. Some medications are not quite liquid (as anyone who ever received a gamma globulin shot in the ass in the military knows) and take time for the body to absorb.  The injection itself should be administered swiftly, like throwing a dart, which practically eliminates any feeling of the puncture.  Needles hitting the bone are painful simply because lance has been damaged, even if microscopically, and when pulled out causes trauma and inflammation.  Bones themselves are not innervated, so the pain isn't actually from the strike of the bone, however, you know that it HAS hit the bone, and it's a psychologically unappealing feel. Using too large of a gauge of needle causes trauma. Many intramuscular shots end up never being deposited into the muscle tissue, and those types of medication are very irritating if not delivered properly.  Subcutaneous injections into areas with little adipose tissue also are quite irritating.

Shiver, nice to know there's an upside to having more than adequate adipose tissue. [:D]

That explains why the steroid shots into my hips were not the most comfortable in the world.  I wouldn't say horribly painful . . . it is JUST a shot after all. . . but less pleasant than a flu shot.  LOL

Also does any one else develop tiny raised pink dots at the injection site?

In my position of amateur doctor I diagnose you with haemorrhoids and give you two days to live.[8|]

Rachard, hemorrhoids affect your asshole and your ability to poop, not your arm loo.

Ok, I think I should call the advice nurse, I developed a very painful and hot swollen dime size lump from the injection.

The nurse at my new doctors office is magical, I have had blood drawn twice and have got a flu shot.  Not only do I not even feel them when she does it, I mean zero feeling but there is no after affect.

Now when I was a young one after my second um was born I had severe bleeding at delivery and was nursing (bear in mind this was in 79 so alot of precautions were taken due to the aids discovery. Therefore even tho I needed a transfusion they didnt do one. I had to go in twice ( yes thats 2) a day to the dr and get iron shots in my rear.....that chiti s like pushing liver through a needle painful to get and painful after.   So my WHOLE nether area was in sad shape, one due to about 100 internal stitches and two due to those damn iron shots.  Course delivering a 9 lb newborn um while only being 4'9" and weighing 89 pounds all natural meaning zero medication wasnt that fun but well worth it.   They didnt have the loverly epidurals pack then.
