I was just thinking. Certain cities are well known because they have very high gay populations.

Are there any cities out there that have unusually high bdsm populations? Where do people think the largest and most active bdsm communities in America are?

I would guess that larger cities like New York and LA would, by default probably also have the largest bdsm communities, but that is not necessarily the case.

What has been your experience of the particular city you live in and it's bdsm scene?

My only experience has been NYC and SF, where both seem to have well established play spaces for BDSM, e.g., Paddles or the Power Exchange.

It would be interesting to see what other cities around the world have to offer the D/s aficionados!

I understand that both London (England) and Berlin (Germany) have a large and well established BDSM population and are very active. I did hear also that Copenhagen in Danmark is good too but not sure as yet.

I dare say that our ideas and form of BDSM is different from yours too.. Doesn't make the answer invalid just not in the USA or the OP's location.

For me, NC has what I would consider a disproportionately active kink scene and I was quite surprised at how busy Austin's scene is.  In the US major kink points are NYC, DC/Baltimore, Boston, LA, SF, Chicago with slightly smaller points in Dallas, St. Louis, N Florida, Atlanta, Portland, Phoenix and Sacramento.  And more growing all the time.  I am surprised at how Philadelphia and San Antonio do not seem to get a real solid sustaining kink community yet.

I'm from Seattle, Washington and I thought they have an amazing community up there.   www.sexpositiveculture.org   or  www.triskeli.org

Also, Portland, Oregon has a fun group too.  http://www.rcdc.org/

I live in Phoenix, Arizona now and there is a great community that is getting larger throughout the state.  www.arizonapowerexchange.org  or  www.desertdominion.org

I would say Toronto, they have several kink clubs, there are dungeons , multiple BDSM groups, leathermen  groups, gay/lesbian communities, swinger clubs and groups. a goth community  and you also have the stores geared  toward such as Northbound Leather which hosts fetish parties and fashion shows

I have family in NC.  I used to live there.  I have been increasingly happy to learn how many groups there are there now.  I have open invitations to go munches and parties when I go home in a number of cities.  Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greenville are ones that show promise!   Also here in Fresno, CA we are getting a good name for ourselves.  We just had a fetish ball, we have a tent area at Fulsom every year, and we have demo people going out to other groups to present.

OMG. What is this world coming to?

An icon, such as the PE closing? How can that be. What did they do wrong? Not pay the bribes in these tough economic times?

Nothing near where I live.  LOL.  But I live out in the country and the big cities is where there would be an active community.

This one may be a bit of a surprise but....Utah.
Now given, I haven't done as much traveling as I'd like to so I'm not super familiar with what the community is like in other states, but Mormonville USA surprisingly has a really wonderful local scene.
There are things lacking as far as actual clubs, but still a good number of well-run play parties and groups.
I love the people in the community out here, because I feel that they really stress the importance of education, knowing proper protocol IF you do decide to go to more formal leather events, and there's a great balance of playing safely and yet being supportive of many kinds of edge play.
I'd really like to travel and see what the bdsm community is like in other states and even countries, see how it compares and contrasts to the local community here and hopefully gain some new experiences.

Kink is dead in SF. There are zero big fetish events this holiday season. Power Exchange just closed (they jumped the shark ten years ago anyway). The Citadel is still operating, and BAGG goes on, but that's about it.

London still has a good fetish scene. NYC's scene has declined. In LA, the kinker events seem to be in Orange County, of all places.

I wonder where I've been. I didn't even know PE closed, and, worse, yet, I had never heard the term "jump the shark" before. ....

Jumping the shark is a colloquialism used by TV critics and fans to denote that point in a TV show or movie series' history where the plot veers off into absurd story lines or out-of-the-ordinary characterizations, particularly for a show with falling ratings apparently becoming more desperate to draw viewers in. In the process of undergoing these changes, the TV or movie series loses its original appeal. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak.
