The problem of course is that this guy does carry some clout in many parts of the world. And those parts of the world are often places where education and awareness of the human condition is sorely lacking. How many homosexuals and transgender people will die in such places, as a result of his words?

And thats no overreaction; many die every year in such places, being accused of witchcraft and such other sins as we might find rather odd notions and ill justification.

But even here in what we like to think of as the educated and aware west, comments like this do not help. Rather like the racist joke - which is funny and to first glance innocent humour, adds to the problem of racism and lends support to those who fulfil its natural conclusion, comments like these merely add to homophobia and transphobia and support harassment and violence.

Although it would never happen, in theory the Pope could be arrested in the UK for comments like these, falling into the category of inspiring others to crime driven by hatred. If a prominent Muslim had so broadcasted his thoughts in this way on the matter, the police would be taking an interest I'd wager.

teh catholic church isnt known for its ability to tolerate any deviance from its teachings- witness the inquisition. although there are some good furniture ideas there... i find it significant that the pharisees whipped themselves publicly for their sins, but the pope wont comment on that...

How can you respect a man who publicly calls for mankind to love each other and help each other, and then singles out a particular group who are behaving 'unnaturally' as the exception? Can't be bothered to target murderers, or paedophiles...no, let's go for the soft target.

Surely it's more unnatural for a healthy male to abstain from sex?

As always, an edict from the pope is usually accompanied by a strong smell of bullshit...

So if you follow the 'thinking'...God makes man in his image, ergo he creates homosexuals.

He then denies them the joys that everyone else has - love, partners, fulfilling sex lives. Instead, he reckons they should be ashamed of the way he made them, and live a life of loneliness and misery.

Total bollocks, if you ask me!

But hey, what do I know? Apparently I'm going to the 'warm place' when I fall off me twig...

long ago i gave up any hope of getting anything worthwhile out of the catholic church in terms of spiritual guidance. nice to see that a decision i made 30 years ago has proved to be one of the best i could have made. a hitler youth veteran in charge of one of the largest religions on earth, condemming homosexuals? where have i heard this kind of bs before?? oh yeah, seems he's carrying on the party line and now has the power to back it up. anyone else thinking antichrist? it would be ironic, wouldn't it?

Very anti-Christ in terms of his message, and on the eve of Christmas - if they stopped to think about it - insulting and offensive to humanity. Not that you would expect any charity from the Catholic Church (institution) because that only extends as far as its own hierarchy in the crudest and oldest form of globalization.

Such a statement sexualizes the sacrament of marriage, negates the most fundamental teaching of Christ, and in preaching divisiveness, hatred and bigotry to people serves far more Satan than God.

Well, I never had any respect for the pope, any pope, I just could not understand the role of a pope, and me from a catholic upbringing, something which I left as soon as I could, as it limited growth. Besides, my beliefs were totally heretical to the teachings of the catholic faith, my local priest told me that at age nine. Bollocks to them, I left.

Ratzinger just has to be their worst choice yet, there is something just not right about that guy, never mind his past, it's the present and future we should be concerned about. Yes, arrest his ass as soon as he steps foot in civilised countries, he is an abomination to mankind and world peace, he seeks to make enemies where there was none before, prick.
