so, i came home last night and my kitchen is just COVERED in ants...

they even made a visible path on the carpet all the way to the linen closet.  it was like a moving line, 3 ants wide, all the way from the kitchen to the closet...

anyway... i cleaned up what i could of the ants, threw away anything they'd been in/on/around that was food related... washed the countertops and vacuumed up the trail of them. 

they came back!!!

i cleaned them up again thismorning before i left... vacuumed up the trail, and sprayed where i thought they were coming from with the only liquid cleaning product I had-- windex.

I came back tonight and yet again they have graced me with their presence. 

WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THESE CREATURES TO GO AWAY??? I can't afford bug spray, because I haven't gotten my unemployment check yet. 

Is there anything I can do in the mean time?

Please help...

Sprinkle Bay Leaves around whatever it is that is attracting them. When you get your check there is a product called Teer-O that works really well, doesn't smell and is pretty cheap.

i think they got pushed inside because of the rain...

i'm not sure what's attracting them, because everything was clean when i left, and i removed anything opened and exposed (like cereal and stuff) after the first swarm. 

but if i figure it out, i will do just that.

and as soon as i get my check, you can bet i will be buying some kind of spray...

Baby powder or talc powder. They inhale it and it drys them out from the inside out. There is little cost, use it where they are coming in. I have yet not seen it work. Its cheap and non chemical.

Until you can get some bug spray, anything with amonia in it will keep them at bay. It wont kill them, but will turn them around, and look for another way in. Spray a very broad area in morning and again at night (My bug man told me this trick when we were invaded with ants at work)

I had the same problem at my last house. A friend recommended mixing equal parts water and vinegar, then adding two teaspoons of chile powder or red pepper. It works, but I'd suggest finding where they are getting in and spraying OUTSIDE the house! LOL, I sprayed all in my house with it, and the smell just would not go away!

Cayenne Pepper also works well with ants as it irritates and burns their thorax as that is where they breathe. It is also non-poisonous to household pets being curious.

I think you need to figure out what kind of ants they are. Different poisons work for different types of ants, depending on what they do for a living. Sweet-eating ants will call for one type of poison, grease-eating ants won;t be affcted by that kind of poison because the won't be attracted to it, some ants I think you have to spray for.... here, check out this website and see if you can spot your ant there -

You live in an apartment. Call your landlord, it is his responibility.

If you don't have a dog or a cat - sprinkle Borax powder ( Its a detergent) around the borders of your house - either inside or out... wait a  few days and if you sprinkled on the inside -vac it up.

I don't know why it works - other than it does...

Go with the Ter-O mentioned in an earlier post. It's VERY effective, it's cheap, it has no odors, it is VERY easy to use, it has no limitations except, to keep away from pets, and wash your hands after. Put it closest to where they are going in and out of the interior structure of the house (usually along a mopboard). Keep it well supplied to them (a couple drops) for a couple days and usually within a week they will be gone.

One also needs to mention that Tar-O is also exceptionally poisonous ... even for humans. Handle this product with exteam care.

Double sided tape: then you can watch them pull their own legs off. If you are into that kind of sick visual entertainment.
 
Poor ants I love them ants, they work so hard.

Ants HATE chalk
Caterers will use spray chalk in green on grass around buffet tables.  or crumbled up pieces works too

It's abrasive.  It cuts into the insect's thoarax and leads to fatal dehydration.

I'm Surprized no one said it yet.

Cinnamon.

Grandma used that stuff everywhere. It works best on Sugar Ants and The really Small one and will force a colony of Aermy Ants to vacate thier own home if you get it in thier openeing hole.

Also you need to make sure they are not finding a new home in your house Seriously If they are in that large a quanity you should be able to follow them about and figure out what they want and what they are doing.

The BEST advice is to call your landlord as it was acurately stated it is their responsibility unles they can prove that you were responsible due to neglegence for leaving something out. Usually they will call in an Exterminator.

If you have Pets I am sorry but MOST Ant Killer is Very Harmful to Animals.
