In the craft department there's a product for setting grommets, You cut a small hole with sizzors, feed the male part of it through the whole line up the female part and use a special tool to whack them together, and you've got your hole.

Can you add more holes to a collar?  It depends on if it is too large for you or too small for you.  If it is too large for you, can easily add more holes but if too small may or may not because you get too close to the end and that hole will tear the collar apart if it breaks.  Most companies make the same collar in different sizes, might help to try to find them online and check their website or write and see if they have the design you want in a different size.

An leather hole puncher might give you a cleaner hole to work with.

mstrj69, It's indeed because it's to small. It goes up to a  size 18, and it is just one or two holes to small to close. This is as big as this particular one gets I think.

Well a lot of people around here find it fun to follow others around and hijack their thread if they don't like you.

I didn't know if you was being sarcastic or not lol.

If you honestly don't know, I'll explain.

I know now..afther several posts..what is is about...collar size and how to modify them :)

You can go to a shoe repair shop..and they can punch in some extra holes . The holes need to be punched "clean" else the leather will crack on the bad spots in time., happens easily when you do it yourself.

JustDarkness, these are nylon doggy collars I want to hole punch, but it's a good tip. You wouldn't want a pretty leather collar to get ruined just cause the holes were not punched right.

For modifying collars that are too large, you can get a leather punch set and all the tools and parts necessary to add grommets from Tandy Leather. Google them for their website. They offer a shopping cart system for online ordering.

That's exactly the term I needed to know to google it, I was googling Gromit setters. And I found a result, but it was a huge bulky item that cost 75 dollars.

The dog collars I have seen are generally set to specific inches with out much room left on the end to add more holes.I have seen many cute dog collars that are made up to 15 and 16 inches and you might not have to add holes.

  • Purchase that collar at PetSmart = $16
  • Buy small pack of 10 grommets/washers with setter = $5
  • Total (gasoline and/or shipping not included) = $21

Add a few curse words for when you mess up a few grommets. Go find flat nose cutters to remove fubar grommet. Add new grommet. Get a bit pissed off when you put on the collar and discover that the buckle now does not line up at the back of the neck 'cause you added grommets.

Sigh when you realize that custom made items really are often good value.

I bought my grommets and grommet setter at a fabric store.  I was making a corset top at the time to wear to my son's pirate themed wedding.  I found it was more difficult to use than I thought it would be.  Unless you were dead straight on and used just the right pressure with the hammer, the grommet would be cockeyed or smashed too much or not enough.  The item eventually turned out okay, but took hours longer than expected to make.

15 and 16 inches are smaller than 18 inches, so there for wouldn't fit. It's not to big it's to small..

There is that consideration, so Obviously one would want to practice before doing the collar they had their heart set on.

There's also machines, that do them too, but like I mentioned they can be 75 dollars or more.

I sold all my late husband's leather tools, so dont recall the name of it. They have a variety of leather hole punchers though and anyone would do. We never used them for collars, but did for belts.
