My property no. Material things are replacable. Only my loved ones (including furry babies) get that sort of protection.

I would agree with that, with one provision - if they're in my house, they're dead. I don't know what their plans are, what they came in  there to do, and I'm taking no chances. I'm killing them. It was their misfortune to misinterpret the Grateful Dead bumper stickers  on the car in the driveway; they picked the wrong house.

And if you happen to live in one of the peoples republic's of New York, New Jersey or California, you're going to jail for a long time and upon leaving will be denied legal possession of a firearm.

First of all, I live in Minnesota, so that doesn't matter to  me. If I wake up in the middle of the night here in Minnesota and hear someone rummaging around in my house, I'm killing them. Unlike others posting in this thread, I certainly won't enjoy it, and I know enough cops that I'm not under any illusions that it'll be an easy thing to live with for the rest of my life, but at least I know I'll have a rest of my life.

Second, from what I understand of California law, that's not necessarily true at all. I don't know anything about New York or New Jersey law, because I have absolutely no interest in ever living or probably even visiting those two places again, but from what I know of California law, there is no duty to retreat, and a homeowner has the right to use whatever force is necessary to neutralize a threat, up to and including deadly force. Considering that my motivation would be a sincere and well-founded concern that my life is in danger, I'd be  willing to take my chances.
