I think everyone is sort of overlooking an important fact mentioned in the original post..."between stress, worry..." anxiety is an obvious sleep killer because you have to relax to rest well. This probably isn't as simple as taking some supplements and purchasing some oils. I don't personally know what the root is (bills, income, not enough hours in the day), but doing whatever you can to reduce the cause of stress and worry should significantly increase your ability to "turn off" at night. The mind is a powerful tool, and certainly there are some things you can take and do to help you cope with stress and worry. I know a bunch of you will rip me for saying this, but being on the computer close to bedtime can cause you heightened delta wave activity from the optic stimulation. Maybe try avoiding the computer for an hour or so before bed, deal with the root of stress and worry, and then stick with your tea (valerian root is a natural relaxer as I think someone mentioned). Melatonin is okay, but remember with supplements like that that you are changing your body's natural chemical balance. Taking too much of that can cause you adverse effects when you don't take it, or hinder your ability to produce it naturally would be my main concern.

Another thought is doing gentle stretches prior to getting into bed or maybe an easy yoga tape an hour before bed.  Sometimes I take a hot shower, avoiding washing my hair, just letting the hot water relax me.  And if you go on amazon you can find relaxation tapes or sleep tapes to help you drop off.

I am a single mom. I live with my mother and her new (since september) husband, who both really just want me out of thier house.  I don't drive, and was given an ultamatum (sp) that if I don't get my lisence by the end of the month, they will no longer pay for my car that I baught.  I don't really get along with my son's father, though I still love Him.  My own father drinks like a fish, and was told that if he doesn't stop, he will die.  I don't have a job because I don't drive.  I need to get my cosmetology lisence, though I forgot EVERYTHING to take my test.  My best friend (other than my Sweets) told me 3 days ago that He wants to kill himself.  My boyfriend lives 45 minutes away, has a crappy job that He hates, has a car that doesn't run right, and I never get to see Him.  I worry about my friends, I worry about my family.  I worry that the weather is going to stay like it is now, and I will never learn to drive because I can't take my car out in 6 inches of snow.  Plus, I can't drive my car (like i planned this weekend) because it doesn't have tags on it, because my stepdad let them run out.  That's basically it.  There's other things too.... But You get the idea.  Thanks for asking! Hehehe! {that was a joke. I promise.}

I know that stress and worry are a big part of it.  Which is why I want to know about the aromatherapy.  I really don't want to TAKE anything, or I would have.  I want to find a safe, natural way to try and fall asleep.    As for the computer, I get on here to talk to my friends that live in other states (and in some cases other countries), becuase everyone needs a shrink. It helps me when I get things off of my chest.  And I'm addicted. I seriously had no idea that it was almost 130 in the morning! {holy shit!}

Wyld, Thank you hun. I am going to check in the health food stores, next time I am out, and see what I can find.  I have been reading up on the stuff here on the net.

I can feel you on sleep issues. I have had to take an Ativan to help me get to sleep for the past few months. I have anxiety issues though mostly due to my multitude of health problems right now  Candles really do work though for relaxation. I have used them in the past, and I find it's not really the scent that relaxes me but just the calming effect in general, if that makes sense. Anyway what i am trying to say is it does not have to be lavender scented to work, IMHO.

I take a valerian based sleeping remedy from the health shop and find it way strong. Had to half the dose to avoid 'next day stoned' which isn't always practical.
Dried flower petals infused with your desired essences are a milder hit. The wheaty bags that one warms in the micro are also very good. Hold to warm your hands, place under your pillow or even wrap around your neck as a soothing pad.
Try and take on fewer of the worries of those around you Fannie.

Try Melatonin. It is the chemical the normal brain produces that induces sleep.

 Also..Lavender is wonderful. It is used as a night time baby wash for its calming effect. You can buy lavender candles (careful if you are taking Melatonin or any other sleep inducer) or one of those plug-in things. If money is an issue go to a discount store and buy the lavender scented bath soap/bath salts, put them in an old sock and put it on your pillow. Or (my trick here) lavender scented dryer sheets between the pillow and the pillow case..

Wel if lavender is out.

Here is what my sisters dr just told her which for a die hard insomnic it apprears imposible.

If there is a herbal or otherswise you can take take ti 3 mintues prior to bed. Set you bed time (this is the hard part) to 8:30 and no later than 9:00 taking a suppliment before hand.  After taking the medication set a schedule to turn the tv off, shut off the computer, do ritual things, brush teeth, clean you your face, ect....just make sure it a routine set for bed time.   Then stick to those hours, I know its like missing the whole night. Dont allow yourself to sleep any longer than 8 hours, no more no less. I have been using this with my sister though before it was a tad earlier.

According to the sleep specialist these hours are prime sleeping time that not only do you sleep better but its the most restorataive of general health and mental health.

On the down side she take perscribed medications which give her no choise to sleep.   I have my own to help but since Pye passed I have not slept all the way through a full night, I do see my dr on Monday and will go over this wth him, as between my normal depression, the cripling anxiety and insomnia which I do have to say except when stress related this works pretty well. Tho getting 8 hours doesnt work so well, Im awake between 5-8 hours.

But the dr swear that this time is prime sleeping to to be of course adjusted with DST.

Girlfriend msg me if I can help and I will call ya, and be sure and charge that dang phone LOL

Insomnia as been a horrible problem for me as long as I remember and the best sleep I have had is on this routine.

Lifelong insomniac here.  Early memories of my mother telling me that the reason I can't get to sleep is that I'm "not trying"!!  How the fuck does one "try" to sleep???

I've used various tricks over the years.  I have had depression & anxiety for as long as I can remember.  Sometimes that interferes with my sleep.  For a few years, I slept with ear plugs in, which I bought by the case.  If I heard any noise at all on my way to sleep, I would wake up & be up for another few hours.  For a time, I did the get-up-and-do-something-else method, which was a pretty productive method.  I got lots done.  When I was a young housewife, TV would go off after the late news, so I would clean house after that.  One time I made Chelsea a new outfit to wear to school the next day.

What has worked the most consistently for me is to fool myself or lie to myself--I'm just gullible enough to believe my own lies.  I will tell myself that I can call in sick the next day to work since I can't get to sleep.  I fall for that one every time & fall right to sleep & sleep till the alarm & go to work like always.  If I'm too hot, I will tell myself that it's really cool & that I'm comfortable & can sleep.  I will count my breaths most nights.  The deal I have with myself is that if I get up to 200 I'm allowed to turn on the light & read some more.  Never have gotten past 150.  I have read myself to sleep every night for the last 50 years or so.

I try not to take any sleep aids for more than 3 nights in a row because those create a dependency & stop working after awhile & make you need more, etc. etc.  Women have a more difficult time turning their brains off than men do.  This is why I choose the distraction methods.  If I can force my brain to concentrate on counting my breaths, other worrisome thoughts will go out of my head long enough to fall asleep.

I've walked on hot coals, once for 8 feet & once for 40 feet.  I figure if I can fool myself into believing that they weren't hot & therefore wouldn't burn my feet, I can convince myself of anything!!!!!

And one side effect I've got from taking sleep aids of ANY kind is that they seem to give me Restless Leg Syndrome, although, one night I actually got it in my arms......OMG!!!! I thought I was going to go nutso!

Something no one's mentioned....go get a sleep study done......they are covered by insurance, at least your doc will have some info to work with.  I've been meaning to have one done, but I know why I wake up...I twitch in my sleep
Good luck in finding something that works.....and pass it on if you find anything, 'k?

There are many types of sleep disorders...if you have a sleep study done it will likely reveal the cause of the twitching (which might be somewhat related to your RLS btw)

Mad, right.  Yeah.  I can just STOP worrying about my friends.  (especially when they say that they are doing things that I "wouldn't approve and would probably rant about", But not tell me what those things are.)  Hmmm.. Easier said than done I think.

Sageling, I understand that I should try and go to sleep, that I should go to bed earlier.  But I have tired.  All it has done for me, is make me lay awake longer.  My dad told me the same thing.  {oh, and my phone WAS charged.  It stays on the charger too much, and it dies too quickly.}

daddysgoodgirl, I love candles, and they do help sometimes. but then, I tend to fall asleep watching them.  I would rather be awake all night worrying about things, than to actually fall asleep with the candles burning, and burn the house down.  lol

Holly, you have mail.

Linnaea, I should try counting my breaths.  I used to have a serious problem counting.  I would count EVERYTHING.  I would count the steps I would take when walking home from work.  I would count the number of times I would chew my food.  I would count the number of times I could crack my knuckles, I would count how many times I pushed the button changing the channel, how many times I stirred my gravy I was making, how many times I would reach into the washing mashine.  I counted how many steps there were in the flight that I was on, no matter where I was, or how many times I woalked up and down them (Made it easier in the dark though.  There's 5 steps at my dad's before a landing, and 10 after that to get to the top.  Mimi's- 9-4, Mom's- 6-7, ex's gram's-3-10.... It doesn't matter  I knew them all.).  So the counting thing would come natural. I will deffinatly need to try that.  I have pretty much forced myself to stop counting so much (it was annoying) and might pick up my bad habit again. But It would be worth it to be able to sleep again.

Thank you all again for your help.
