This is really not a bdsm related health/safety question but I have always been one to bend the rules.

Today I went to the gym and decided to get a little 15 min chair massage before working out. There is a chiropractic office that sets up sometimes and does them there. I am a massage-slut and I take it where I can get it.

Anyway, the girl and I were chatting as she rubbed and she commented several times I was really tight, etc. She was rubbing up by a shoulder blade and I suddenly got very light headed. I waited for it to pass, but then informed her I was a little light headed and she stopped. She said that happens sometimes and it has to do with lactic acid that is built up being released into the body. As she was explaining this I passed out cold. It just came crashing in on me.

I came to a few minutes later, drenched in sweat, very disoriented and hearing people talk to me. I couldn't quite answer for another minute or so. I drank some water, rested a bit longer and eventually sat up slowly....only to black out again. Whoa. I have been yucky and headache-y all day.

The therapist reassured me lightheadedness and even fainting it is not unusual with accupressure and although she was not using accupressure techniques at the time, a rubbing massage can trigger a similar reaction. I am still just a little bothered though as I frequently get massages (professional and otherwise) and never had that type of reaction. Now I am also a little distressed about my favorite relaxing activity being tainted - life is so cruel!

Anyone else ever had a similar reaction during a normal, simple massage? I googled it but did not come up with much except a summary of a session presented on it at some massage therapist convention.

I know it can make you lightheaded. But I didn't know you could pass out from it. I know you are supposed to drink a ton of water after a massage.

One of the best feelings in the world is the afterglow after a full body massage. omg

i recently just taught my high school science class about the process of lactic acid fermentation and how it works...

lactic acid fermentation basically occurs when the body does not have enough oxygen. this is why runners, and other athletes after strenuous exercise tend to get cramps.

perhaps when you were being massaged you were not able to breathe fully, or had done strenuous things prior to it? i can't say much beyond that, because passing out for any reason when you are healthy is not normal. please be safe and if it happens again please seek medical help. something much more upsetting may be occuring.... best wishes.

I used to be office manager in a physical therapy clinic and had REALLY tight shoulder muscles. As one of the therapists would give me a quick "desk" massage, I'd always get this big rush to the head.....dizzy, "buzzed" feeling. He told me that when the muscles are tight, blood and oxygen are restricted in their attempt to flow to the head. When they start relaxing via the massage, you do get a big blood rush to the head.

I never heard of passing out from it, though. Especially repeatedly. Low blood pressure, maybe? Had you eaten that day? Low blood sugar combined with lactic acid rush? I agree that if it happens again, I'd look into it.

I had eaten breakfast, had not worked out yet, and could breathe fine.

Being slightly obsessive, I did find some information online after all. I feel reassured. vasovagal nerve reflex

Of course, anonymous message board posts are a way funner way to try and find information as opposed to professional journals.

Good article! Thanks for coming back and posting the link!

(At least I was in the ball park with the low blood pressure theory!lol)

There can be other causes of fainting besides the Vaso-Vagal effect.
The best thing to do is discuss it with your physician.

I have had times where I get so relaxed and off into the void that I forget to breathe and my mind in relaxation also sometimes forgets. I've passed out a couple times. My massage therapist has to be warned ahead of time to remind me to breathe. New ones will actually laugh when I tell them but soon realize the why.

Thanks for this post and the link. I am one of those who faints easily; I'll keep that in mind if I ever get a chair massage.

Its hard to be conclusive with these puzzles, although i would suspect pressure on the artery supplying the head, either manually through pressure too close to the carotid... or muscles spasming causing this pressure...
i've never heard of lightheadedness or fainting with acupressure...fainting is a lack of blood to the head yeah? lack of oxygen...the only thing that should happen is an increase in blood to the head...not a decrease.
You have to remember massage poorly applied can cause injury...
Bottom line in this case is...assuming there is no prior medical history of fainting...never see that therapist again!!!

Besides that, have you had your blood pressure checked recently?
