I found this on the news this morning and found it interesting. It's always been one of my favourites, very addicting.

Computer puzzle may ease post-traumatic stress Thu Jan 8, 1:03 PM LONDON (Reuters) - Playing Tetris, rated one of the greatest video games of all time, immediately after traumatic events appears to reduce flashbacks that plague sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a British study.
The preliminary findings could lead to new treatments to prevent or cut flashbacks that are a hallmark of the condition, also known as PTSD, Oxford University researchers said.
"This is only a first step in showing that this might be a viable approach to preventing post traumatic stress disorder," Emily Holmes, a psychologist who led the study, said.

Not sure that would work for Indiana Jones after experiencing the temple of doom or other numerous incidents where people have been trapped in a small room with the walls moving in on them. Those people may want to try scrabble instead perhaps.

In a related story:

Computer game may reduce automotive deaths Thu Jan 15, 1:03 PM PACOIMA (Reuters) - Playing World of Warcraft, rated one of the greatest video games of all time, appears to significantly reduce the likelihood of being involved in an automobile accident, according to some guy.

The preliminary findings revealed that the rate of incidence among raiding guild members was 55% less than the general population, researchers said. Other findings showed that players with over 90 hours of playtime logged per week had a probability of less than 0.01% or being involved in an automobile accident.  The single fatality case involved a player hurrying home from work for a raid, carrying 4 Happy Meals  with him into his car as he left work.  Researchers noted that the studied population generally didn't have jobs or cars, and many didn't yet have their licenses either.  Approximately 48% were living at home with their parents, and 7% couldn't finish the survey because one of their parents were coming up the stairs so they had to minimize the window.

"This is only a first step in showing that this might be a viable approach to vastly improving highway safety," Abony Deathstalker, a lvl 55 Deathknight who led the study, said.

You can't make this stuff up...

Haha, before I caught on I was about to suggest that.

Re: The original post, I read it a few days ago and the research seems pretty promising, I personally play tetris to wind down sometimes but after a longer session I'll still see blocks falling when I close my eyes. It doesn't surprise me that much that it triggers similar areas in the brain, but it's still pretty odd.
