Vendaval -> The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/21/2009 8:55:58 PM)

Well, we just had the Golden Globes and the Oscars are coming soon but there is the opposite end of the spectrum, The Razzies!  What are your nominations and votes for the worst movies of 2008?

"Myers' 'Guru' up for year's worst"

"Which brings us back to Myers' "Love Guru," which followed his hugely profitable "Austin Powers" franchise. Myers' portrayal of "a platitude-spouting mystic" leads the Razzie list for worst picture, Wilson said.

It may also have been the biggest box office bomb: the film, expected to be a summer hit, lost $30 million, he said.

Other worst picture nominees include "Disaster Movie" and "Meet the Spartans" -- both featuring the same writer-directors and essentially the same cast. The latter film "somehow managed to work references to Britney Spears into an ancient Spartan 'plot,' " Wilson said.

Also competing for the top dishonor is "The Happening," which Wilson described as "an eco-disaster tale whose 'villain' drew more guffaws than gasps," and Paris Hilton's "The Hottie and the Nottie," which earned three Razzie nominations overall."

Great lines from the Yahoo Razzies article:

Eddie Murphy, named worst actor, supporting actor and supporting actress last year for multiple roles in "Norbit," has two nominations this time, as worst actor and worst screen couple alongside himself for dual roles in his sci-fi comedy dud "Meet Dave."

"In the Name of the King" filmmaker Uwe Boll had three nominations for 2008 movies, worst director for that flick and "1968: Tunnel Rats" and "Postal," worst supporting actor for playing himself in "Postal" and worst screen couple alongside "any actor, camera or screenplay."

I LOVED THE LOVE GURU!!!!

Seriously it was funny as hell. Ben Fucking Kingsley was in it.... SIR BEN KINGLEY. And who the hell else can have a line like.

"There is a Question, If your Uncle Jack Helps you off an Elephant, Whould you help your Uncle Jack off an elephant?"

And What about "Mariska Hargatay .......uh..... Mariska Hargatay"

This Movie was GREAT! That Sucks it is even Nominated.

...you are part of the problem.

Anyways, all of these films are well deserving of their nominations. Even though Tropic Thunder had it's high points (mainly Robert Downey Jr, Tom Cruise and Toby Maguire), Jack Black should have been nominated for his role...but that's true of most roles played by Jack Black. Also, anyone involved in "An American Carol" needs to be banned from filmmaking, immediately and forever. The same goes for Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. Nice guys, but they have no business making movies.

I'm mostly super excited for the Oscar nominations tomorrow :)

I see it's cause he's Canadian. You Racist.

Seriously, The problem is people who fail to see they although a movie may not appeal to them there are many that it will. The Real Problem is that some people take it far to seriously.

....but I'm Canadian. Mike Myers is a blight on my otherwise fantastic country haha

The reason I take it seriously is because movies like this make it a lot harder for people writing good things to get funding. Mindless, racist wastes of celluloid are more profitable. Seriously, the best scripts circulating right now will probably never get made. It's really depressing to read a script and think, "Wow, that was really good. It's too bad that no one will ever get to see it."

Anyways, back to the Razzies!

I hope that The Happening finally gets Hollywood to stop Shyamalan. Yeah, he did the Sixth Sense, but how many horrible, pretentious  movies will he be permitted to make before he's stopped?

I saw the commercials for The Love Guru.  If anyone saw the movie after those, I assume they know what they were looking at.  You couldn't have dragged me there.

"Hot or Not"

O god... I thought that was a joke! I didn't think the movie actually got made...

Wow. I'm guessing daddy paid for the making of that one... there's no way anyone else would have.

You guys ever read MrCranky's movie reviews ? He hates everything, but he sure is funny...and often right, imo.

What about the movies "Speed Racer" and "The Spirt" there are to movies that did not last a week and did not make money.  It is said "Speed Racer" only made 50 million and they spent 200 million.  "The Spirt" did not make I think 20 million.   I saw both and saddly was disappointed.

Vendaval -> RE: The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/22/2009 11:21:54 AM)

Yeah, either that or she saved up her monthly allowance.

Speed Racer looked bad in the trailers and The Spirit had poor reviews.  I will be checking both out on DVD in a few months out of morbid curiosity.

AFAIK daddy doesn't pay for much of anything Paris nowadays.  I know she flies commercial, not on the Hilton private jet.  Plus he's not listed in the credits as a producer.

As near as I can tell, it was financed by one Hadeel Reda (his only movie to date), in conjunction with Summit Entertainment, the company that made "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" among many others.  No telling how much each contributed, but he's listed first, so his share was likely more than 50%.

Remember this was made during a bout of media Paris-mania, so he might have thought that millions of teenage girls would go see it.  Bad investment decision, obviously--in its opening weekend it grossed approx.$249 per screen, or roughly 30 people per theater for the entire weekend.  So about 4 or 5 people per showing in its opening weekend.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/22/2009 1:31:47 PM)

Honestly, pan what you want, but sometimes, "stupid" is the point. If we can't laugh at ourselves and laugh at some genuinely hokey stuff... well... those folks just don't have a broad enough sense of humor for me. Then again, I sometimes sit with my darlings and offspring and re-create Mystery Science Theater 3000, just because it's DAMNED FUN... For a while, I had a quote from Love Guru on my tags here. (It's since been replaced with the True Blood quote... but we got a hell of a laugh out of it while it lasted).

I think that my favorite thing about the Razzies is the occasional really cool recipient who just hams it up and has a blast with being panned. Heck, if you can't take criticism, you don't belong in the Arts.

A friend of mine is a film critic, and had to go see an advanced screening of The Spirit (he saw Notorious the same day and said it was amazing. He hates rap but said it was a fantastic film, so you should go check it out :) ). Afterwards I asked what he thought of the Spirit, and his exact words were, "If it was a baby, I would abort it. If it was a toddler, I would still try to abort it." Which made me laugh harder than almost anything else ever has.

Everyone I know who saw Speedracer described it in terms of having things injected into their eyes( skittles, melted starbursts, lsd, rainbows, etc)

Oh yeah, MST3000 is a great way to spend cold winter nights.  [sm=popcorn.gif]

slaveboyforyou -> RE: The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/22/2009 4:12:36 PM)

I love MST3K!  I also miss Joe Bob Brigg's shows that he hosted; his rating system for bad flicks was hillarious.

Vendaval -> RE: The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/22/2009 6:51:04 PM)

Didn't Joe Bob call his show "Trailer Trash" or something like that?
I miss Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, as a hostess for horror flicks.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: The Razzies, 2008's worst movies! (1/22/2009 6:56:02 PM)

Nope, he had a couple of shows.  Joe Bob's Drive-In Theater and Monstervision.  Yeah, I liked Elvira too.  I remember when every little UHF station would air B-movies on Friday nights, and they were hosted by someone in a vampire outfit or the like.
