Does anyone know if seratonin-uptake inhibitors have the side effect of killing sexual response?

that one i used to get the following information:

"selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

Side Effects

The side effects of SSRIs are usually mild and manageable, although once in a while a sensitive person gets a severe reaction. Like most antidepressants, SSRIs may cause nausea, dizziness, or dry mouth, not to mention a range of sexual-function side effects, including decreased sexual interest (in men), increased sexual interest (in women), ejaculation problems, impotence, or menstrual changes.

During the first couple of weeks of taking them, you may feel sick and more anxious. Some of these tablets can produce nasty indigestion, but you can usually stop this by taking them with food. More seriously, as noted above, they may interfere with your sexual function. There have been reports of episodes of aggression, although these are rare."

also note that different people react differently to various medications. not all ssri have the same effects on each person. there are a few to try, as well as other types of medications to treat the synptoms this medication is prescribed for. again, consult with your doctor and pharmacist.

I usually do Google everything, but for some reason I didn't on this question.......brain dysfunction, maybe? LOL.

i took SSRI's for 6 months when i had PND with my last baby.

I couldnt orgasm for the entire time, and 2 weeks after i stopped taking them.

when i told my family doctor of this worrysome side effect, her response was, 'your depressed, your not supposed to have a libido, let alone a orgasm'. Such a twat!

I felt very low at the time, intimacy and love making, soothed me so from what seemed like a very sad, hopeless time.

Twould seem drug companies have negated to state this on the packet, merely referring to 'some people may experience some element of reduced sexual response. Not sod all for 6 months!

After 6 months, compliance became a issue, i missed the intamacy and bonding of orgasming with the person you love too much to continue on them. Hey, i may of gotten over my PND, but id of split with my partner!

Dear Julj,

SSRIs are notorious for killing sexual response. That's why, even though they work remarkably well in treating depression, noncompliance is still high.

The original ones, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil are the worst offenders. The pharmaceutical companies have been working to develop ones with less pronounced sexual side effects.
Some of the newer ones are Wellbutrin, Celexa, Lexapro. I'm not sure if these actually are better but since they all work in a similar manner, your doctor should be willing to keep trying to find one that suits you best. And if you do change, give it a good month or two to REALLY see how your sexual response is affected.

yes, yes, yes and yes.

It sucks.

There are alternatives. For example, lithium doesn't have the same effect for most people. Depending on what you're taking it for, there're other options. Talk to your doctor and explain what you're looking for. Most are willing to work with you around side effects.

now if I could only find a birth controll that didn't destroy my libido.
