OTC pyridium is a god send! I was given the prescription version years ago when I had a kidney infection, and now I keep the OTC stuff in stock around my place. Not only am I prone to the infection mentioned, but I also have something called dysuria, which is more or less all the symptoms on having one without there being any infection. To save myself the time - and pain - of a trip to the doc, since they have to put in a catheter and do a friggin ultrasound to confirm every time, I have taken to also keeping the home test strips around. I do everything they say, wipe front to back, pee before and after sex...the list goes on and on....and I still get them. That's where the rest of the arsenal comes in - if one truely knows what one is doing, one does not always need anti-biotics. Cranberry juice on it's own will do little, expecially if it is cranberry cocktail. Sugar feeds a UTI, making it worse. Cranberry pills are your best bet, 3 pills 3 times a day, along with high doses of vitamin c to acidify the urine as the bacteria can not live in an acidic enviroment, garlic pills and a non-caffine diuretic with plenty of water. My intake during infection is somewhere in the realm of a liter every hour, and also does wonders for my skin. Sure, all this may be more to remember than just popping an anti-biotic, but in the long run it's better for someone who gets these pesky things on a regular basis.
