I always wash clothes before I wear them... because there is always chemical residue that remains from when the fabric was originally treated or dyed. Since I'm sensitive to chemicals my skin will often break out if I don't. More often then not, people never consider whats hanging around in the fibers of their new clothes. Formaldehyde is one of the common one, often found in wrinkle or stain resistant fabrics (including cotton.)

When I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease I talked to the consultant about why the disease appears to be on the increase. His view is that we are becoming too "clean". People are using too many disinfectants and their immune systems can't cope. My Grandmother always said you "have to eat a speck of dirt before you die"

As for the clothes thing I have never washed anything new before I wear them.

Talking of washing things to rid the production chemicals, are you aware what chemicals are actually in cleaning products ?
As it is, most people keep a store of what in industry might be called chemicals hazardous to health in their home, all the cleaning and germ killing products. Chemicals leech off their container,some get through plastic even, and all those household chemicals stored together gassing off, what a cocktail, what could be acceptable safety wise, might be somethingf entirely different when stored with other products.

The sense of smell is your ally, if you can smell a product when sealed in it's container, you are breathing the gas emitted from it, and to know plastic is a chemical compound, it breaks down over time, gassing off whatever is in it's make up ready for us to breath.

Cleaning, despite it's description, might very well be the stealthy harm to us, me, I will take my chances with dander, at least it is organic.

I wash undergarments before wearing them. Most of the cloths I buy are wearable right out of the bag. Depending on the material that is.

Any article of clothing that will be directly touching my skin has to be washed first because otherwise I develop a rash. The exceptions are jackets, coats and shoes. My hands start to sweat after handling new clothing in a store and sometimes I develop headaches, running sinuses and eye irritation from being in clothing stores too long. I use liquid laundry soap free of dyes or scents or colors to wash clothing, bedding and towels. The most likely chemical treatment causing the allergic reations appears to be formaldehyde.

What are the reactions to formaldehyde allergy?
"Reactions to formaldehyde depend on the type of exposure that has occurred. Formaldehyde is not only a sensitiser but also a potent primary irritant. Exposure to formaldehyde gas may cause burning sensations in the eye, nose and throat, skin rashes, tightness of the chest and wheezing, fatigue and headaches. The condition appears to be inhereted as one side of my family frequently has these reactions.

These symptoms may be a result of a primary irritant effect or an allergic sensitisation to formaldehyde.

Frequent or prolonged exposure may cause hypersensitivity, leading to the development of allergic contact dermatitis. This may occur through skin contact with formaldehyde containing products or with clothing made from fabrics containing formaldehyde. Dermatitis caused by clothing tends to affect parts of the body where there is greatest friction between the skin and fabric, for example "trouser dermatitis" is usually apparent on the inner thighs, gluteal folds and backs of the knees. Sweating may also be a factor in causing the allergic dermatitis as sweat or sebum appears to leach free formaldehyde from formaldehyde resins. Individuals sensitive to formaldehyde are not necessarily hypersensitive to formaldehyde resins. Clothing dermatitis appears to affect women more than men."

Until recently, I was not aware that formaldehyde was a problem in new clothing, I was not even aware it was there until searching for a special item of very close fitting clothing recently I came across the statement that no formaldehyde is used in the production of the garment. Now knowing there is that stuff in the fabric, I would err to not buying a certain product from a certain outlet if they could not certify that formaldehyde was not in the fabric, as washing a new item such as this might be difficult and there annoying knowing what I apparently seem to be able to do to laundry.

i dont like the feel of sizing on my skin. sizing=the stuff that makes fabric lie nice and stiff so it can be put nicely on the bolts before its made into clothing. washing it makes the sizing go away and then i am more comfortable.

as some days *all* clothing hurts to wear...i'm not going to push my luck.

I don't like the sizing in new clothes, so those get washed. Otherwise, no big deal to me.

And those of us that go commando, well, we don't worry about those undies ...

It weren't undies I were looking for, but a waspie, and they can get kinda tight.

I wash them first.
On some clothing, there is a funky smell that is offensive to me.
I, too, don't like sizing against my skin.

Mine would be new socks.......

My favourite old, washed a bazillion times items, would be jeans, t-shirts, and sheets!

Sheets NEVER go on the bed until they've been washed a time or two.

I buy 'em and wear 'em. Underwear comes in packages and I presume no one else has tried them on.

Now, how about new plates and glasses? I just rinse them out. My wife insists on putting them through the dishwasher before using. Same considerations, I guess.

Any new plates, glasses or other kitchen appliances are thoroghly washed and air dried before using.
