Is anyone on an ocean coastline that knows of how to repair salt water/chlorine damage caused by sea water and pools?

Are there any products specific to this? Regular and salon products are not working (that are sold in Canada). Tried mayonaise n egg in desperation, oh boy, I smell like a sammich now.

Olive oil or mayonnaise, wrap hair in saran wrap or a shower cap, with a towel around it. Keep on for about three hours. The smell will wear off in a few days.

Beyond this if you can get to a store, Hair Mayonnaise or Cholesterol. But you have to keep it in for a few hours, wrapped in plastic so it stays there, and warm so it soaks in faster.

It will probably cost you a few bucks, but salons seem to have hair repair products for every kind of damage imaginable.

Get a hot oil treatment kit. They usually cost less than $10 in the stores. I use these in the wintertime when my hair gets dry and dull.

seems so, hot oil is my only option now.

thanks all, was hoping for some wonder conditioner, hate the feel of oil.

Don't know how any warm weather coasties keep decent hair honestly.

When I was swimming in chlorine a lot I would use the store bought deep conditioning treatments and slather my hair with it, cover it with plastic wrap and then with tin foil, and would leave it on for at least three hours.... I looked like I was waiting to go to Mars but my hair thanked me for it

Seriously...Wanders does what i do. Get a deep conditioner, heat it slightly and cover with a shower cap. Also...use the sun in your favor. Apply a conditioner when you know you will be outside

I have no repair for salt water damage - but as a frequent swimmer - there is a commerical product called "Ultra Swim" shampoo and conditioner that is made to pull the chlorine out of your hair. Beauty supply stores like Sally's carry their own brand that is just as good.

what you want to do is *prevent* damage. next time before swimming, wet your hair and condition it. then put on a swim cap. you do double duty...the conditioner prvents the salt water from damaging it, and it conditions deeply because you're trapping heat in the cap too.

salt water will dull your hair because salt crystals are sharp, even dissolved in water. it also gives a buildup, so a clarifying shampoo should help some, or rinse your hair with diluted apple cider vinegar. if you can find coconut oil, a SMALL amount of that applied to the hair (we're talking about the amount you could scrape under one short fingernail for the entire head of hair) will also help smooth out roughened hair. coconut oil can be found in the cooking oil section of some grocery stores, also at health food stores.

Hair Mayonnaise is a deep conditioner. But once you've damaged the hair you need the three hour thing to help repair it. As we've said, in future you should prevent it by using conditioner liberally and by rinsing off the moment you get out of the pool/ocean.

I'm dealing with the same issue.....too much chlorine from swimming has been drying my hair out, so i've been really interested in reading all the suggestions here...Thank you! My Stylist suggested i start wetting my hair down, then slathering on the cream rinse before i put on a cap.....she also suggested i pick up a bottle of deep conditioner and use it every 3 shapoos....so far so good.

On a related note, anyone ever had trouble with blond hair gaining a greenish hue from too much swimming in the summer? I love to swim but only have access to public and university pools, which are always way too chlorinated. Can I use the same techniques as described above?

For chlorine in hair, definitely look for shampoo for swimmers. Most drug stores carry it. And then, yes as everyone said, slather on the conditioner and put it under one of those oh-so-lovely swimming caps. You'll be such the fashion plate - but it WILL do wonders for your hair.

Got a hot oil treatment at the salon this morning, now that it has dried it seems to have improved somewhat. sigh, she said I should have cut off the ends immediately though, a few days did make a difference in the continued death of hair ends splitting. grrr. oh well, I got my health lol.

Yes. First wet hair with clean water. Then condition. Then cover with a swim cap. Immediately afterwards rinse hair. Doing this should prevent any greening.
Prevention is easier than cure.

Some stores will sell tubes of conditioner that come with hair colouring kits, or buy a colouring kit on sale if necessary check Zehrs of Walmart for discontinued old stock as they sometimes offer them for as little as $3 and thow out the dye and leave that conditioner on for an hour before rinsing. if your hair is short to medium length a 1/3 to a 1/2 of a tube is more than enough and will give you extra to use for a couple rinses later on. they are formulated a lot different than regular hair conditioners so you should notice a considerable difference.

chlorinated pools will mess with your hair.. because its a bunch of chemicals... sea water all it'll do is make your hair kinda icky untill you wash it. i've lived all but two years of my life on an island.. and i've gone swimming every summer.. and the only thing i do is make sure i use conditioner when i wash after going to the beach.. no fancy stuff needed

I used to spend 2 hours a day in the pool and living in northern Canada it gets really dry here in the winter as well.

The best thing I found for my hair was a deep conditioner. Pantene Pro V makes a good one and I used to get a repair conditioner from my salon as well.

I agree the mayo thing works ok but you smell odd after.

Honey and beer works to some degree as well.

my Sir likes to stroke my hair, which was always tangly until i figured these things out:

-Pantene is awesome, but mix it with those little tubes of conditioner they put in bleaching kits. You don't need much each time... one tube goes a long way.
-vary the conditioners you use. I always use Pantene as a "base" and mix it with something else. If i expect my hair will be stroked i sometimes use three at once.
-Rinse you hair with COLD water, after the pool and the shower. i don't know why this works, but it makes a big difference with my hair and skin.

Worked for me...
