RainydayNE -> things you said you wouldn't do again (1/26/2009 7:39:43 PM)

to anyone else with a bad habit --

if you got to a point where you had things under control and then for whatever reason, you slipped back to it, even after several YEARS, how did you get over feeling crappy about it?

Usually by taking control again.  Then I lose it.  Then I take it back again ... bit of a cycle for me with several things - dieting, exercise, keeping organized.

Be kind to yourself while you're trying to get that control back again.  [:)]

Hi Rain
I'll beat myself up over it then take charge again and get over it. We're only human yanno and it's really OK to make little slips now and then.

hugs

Getting pressured into meeting someone too soon.  I have to learn to say no.

I swore I would never ever get the flu (or whatever this fresh hell is) again. Look at me. I swear to god I would rather be dead.

Rainy, everyone falls off of some sort of wagon. This is one instance of, tomorrow is a new day. Just start over and keep trying. It's okay to fail once in awhile.

.forgive yourself for being human. Stop beating yourself up. Promise to remember how badly you feel right now and carry a wee bit of the aftereffect with you as a way to keep it from happening again

In the words of Ozzy Osbourne (in reference to his drug use) : "Sometimes I f*** up.  But you know, I pick myself up and try again."

It's actually been studied psychologically. Generally it's the people who accept that something went wrong and they should move on, try again, whatever, and just learn from their mistakes that are the most successful.  So whatever it was, think about why you might have done it, figure out a way to not make the same decision or whatever, and try again.  Keep trying.  Stay patient.  Try to be more fogiving of yourself.  There are things that everyone wishes they didn't do, or wouldn't do.  There are plenty for me.  I just have to keep trying because some of them would kill me and/or hurt a lot of people along the way.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  Sometimes I get in a funk, usually when I screw something up, and can look back on ten years and say 'WTF was I doing?' and it feels like time has passed and I haven't accomplished anything, etc., etc.  I am able to exaggerate with the best of 'em, going from 'Geez, I screwed that up, let me try again," to the extreme of 'I'm the biggest idiot on the planet.' in nanoseconds.  Then I bounce back again.  Fortunately it doesn't happen that often.

Everyone is human we all make mistakes, the important thing is to forgive ourselves. The only really bad mistake is the one we do not learn and grow from.  My own worst mistake was cured with a divorce !

Cuffkinks -> RE: things you said you wouldn't do again (1/29/2009 7:27:18 AM)

There's an old saying: "The difference between a fool and a wise man is that a wise man learns from his mistakes."
Slipping back into an old bad habit is a mistake, one that we know we shouldn't make. But sometimes we do. We're all human. We all make mistakes. The point is not to dwell on it or beat yourself up over it. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get yourself back on track.

To expand on this, i've also found that with each repeat of the cycle i learn more and find it easier to deal with the next time, if there is one... learn more from your "failures" than you do your successes and view it as such  :)
