what is a switch and how do I know if I am one?

A switch is this really thin stingy piece of tree wood old fashioned parents whooped kids with....

In all seriousness a switch is someone who plays on both sides of the coin Dominant and bottom. And the only way you can really tell is just by experince. I'm not really the most greatest person to explain it though.

Feline Persuasion is correct.

But there are many threads already about it and I think you could learn a lot by checking them out.

Have a look at these threads (for example)

'am i a switch, or something else?'
'Switch types'
'Pretty Sure I'm A Switch... When Do You Know?'
and perhaps even 'Switches Unite!'

I'm sure if you click back through older threads than tese you will find more enlightening opinions.

good luck :)

I agree with Fergus. You should definitely look around the boards. I promise you will find a ton of info on switches.

For me, I consider myself a switch because I enjoy dominating as well as submitting. ( I lean towards the dominant side, however.) I think a switch is someone who enjoys both sides of the spectrum.

To find out if you are a switch you need to look at yourself and ask a few questions such as "what do I like?" and "how do I feel about..." and analyze your attitudes towards both domination and submission.

Good luck.

Who is a switch? pretty much anyone and everyone in some fashion. NO ONE is 24-7 dominant in ALL their relationships in their entire life. At some time in your life, you submit to the will of parents, bosses, teachers, law enforcement, trainers, et-cetera.

And while one CAN be 24-7 submissive for your entire life, it's still quite difficult to never assert any kind of authority over anyone anytime anywhere.

So...what do we define as a switch?

I say someone who is equally comfortable and satisfied in either form of power exchange, and enjoys both.

Some switches are long-term, typically assuming a submissive or dominant position in a relationship so long as the relationship remains essentially unchanged.

Some are always looking to dominate if possible, but happy to submit to those who PROVE capable of topping them...."dom me, or I'll dom you!!!" or "tame me, if you can" Some of these may secretly (or not so secretly) hope for a dynamic power shift where they challenge, or are challenged by their partner, and the tables become turned.

What most people think of first, is a relationship where it's "I dom today, you dom tomorrow" which often works out far better in play relationships or s/m rather than long term full-time d/s.

I feel a wonderful excercise in a d/s relationship that can stand it is one day of the year where the roles ARE reversed, without fear of reprisal the following day, perhaps on the sub's birthday. It may prove to be a wonderful learning experience to walk a mile in the shoes of the other.

Cheers.

I disagree with the assertion that no one can be Dominant at all times, for the simple fact that isolated ACTS of submission do not necessarily make one submissive.

There IS such a day. It's called Boxing Day, although it's not observed in most areas of the world. In fact, I rather doubt it's observed much in England any more, either. I tried to talk Master into observing it here this year, but He wasn't having any part of it.

It is the thing on the wall that turns the light on and off.

Well, do you enjoy both Domming and Subbing, or Topping and Bottoming? That would be a good indicator.

It is a bit like asking "How do I know if I am bisexual?" It is an inner desire.

And yes, I agree with the other posters. . . read up on it.

Best,

LaMalinche

A Switch is the person who stops the Dom in the middle and makes suggestions on how they could be more effective, from his or her own experience. :D
