President Obama is taking more flack in 2 weeks than any other President that I have
seen in my lifetime.
I have stated I expect to NOT agree with all his decisions.

I am glad and proud of the fact that President Obama came forth and publically said he made a mistake.
[sm=applause.gif]
After years of seeing his predecessor do hundreds of things that he should have apologized for and did not, I think President Obama certainly is on the right track!
The reason Team barry is taking MORE FLACK in 2 weeks then you have ever seen, is simply a monster of his own making. " you will not find one lobbyist in my administration, (16 of them ), We cannot drive our SUV's and have our thermostats set to 72, ( the oval orchid office is set to UBERHEAT) , the most transparent admin ever, then he decreases the size of the google cache by 300 %. Then he nominates 3 tax cheats.  then he tells people to not listen to rush limbaugh.
can you say first ammendment? and every day something new creeps up.
and you wonder why he is taking flack?
He set the playing field, his rules.

I'm also pretty much of a "centrist" like Hippie, a "Lou Dobbs Populist".
President Obama's just taken office so I'm certainly willing to give the guy a chance of course!
And if he's willing to admit he made a mistake then good on him.
Bush or Clinton would never do that!
Lobbyists need to be ostracised.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 8:20:16 AM)

President Obama admitted that nominating Daschle and standing behind Daschle's nomination was a "mistake"; even though good old '59 may still not think it was.

That is the first positive thing I've heard coming out the White House is quite some time.

Good for you Mr. President! (Swear on beth's life - none of that was sarcasm!)

Anyone who has the confidence to point a finger at himself and take the blame for making a mistake gets kudos from me. It's kinda refreshing actually.

Sanity -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 8:37:19 AM)

I'm also relieved that President Obama did the right thing in this case but I'm a bit apprehensive as to the reason why. Initially he came out and said he stood by his man Daschle, knowing full well that Daschle was unethical.

From here, it looks like the decision may have been purely for political expedience - President Obama threw Daschle under the bus because he had become a liability.

Sanity, I don't know how far you have to go back to find an example of one Presidential decision that wasn't made with some big portion of "political expedience". However, going by memory alone, this is the first one where the 'buck stops here' card was played. "I screwed up" should have been on a handy cue card for the Oval office since 1984.

President Obama said exactly that. He said what most of his supporters, especially those on CM, weren't willing to accept. Hell - that's worthy of a kudos right there, isn't it?

Does it make for smooth sailing ahead? Doubtful, especially if he still has some outstanding 'back-room' debt to payoff as indicated by his trial balloon consideration of  Dean for this position. He's already got the wolf-pack from many of his supporting cast of special interests pounding on the door. Now he has to deal with Speaker Pelosi's gaff.

Let's see how that plays out. Do you think in your wildest dream she'll say "I screwed up!"? Maybe in her pontificating, delusional, out of touch, left wing world she's been told there are 500 million people applying for unemployment. I'm sure it will be a 'miss-speak' or a 'miss-representation' or some other thing like it was a metaphor.

I'm not going to attack President Obama or come up with a rationalized reason to be against anything coming out of his administration anymore than I rationalized support of President Bush. Good ideas, like the cap on executive compensation for the next Bush/Obama stimulus package should have been in place the first time around. Let's see what happens - it's two weeks. The "I screwed up" examples have been well documented. So on two weeks and one day - I'm (as valueless as it is) very much in support of this pronouncement.

If if really wants to get me excited; lets see him strip each and every dollar of pork that Nancy Pelosi and her ilk have put into the stimulus Bill. I'll start sending him weekly fruit baskets if he has the courage to make the USA a functional organization, demands results, and cuts employment as part of the budget balancing as any well run operation would under current economic conditions. You don't add 600,000 employees when you are losing money - unless of course you can print it.

Rememberthe President's farewell address?

"There is legitimate debate about many of these decisions, but there can be little debate about the results.

Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks and there are things I would do differently, if given the chance.
Yet, I've always acted with the best interests of our country in mind. I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right. You may not agree with some tough decisions I have made, but I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions. "

not one apology or mention of any wrong doing...I know the guy is gone.  But is it not refreshing to hear someone finally accept some form of responsibility for their actions?

Obama has a long way to go.  he will experience many set backs as well successes. Just seems that if you are going to pick on something, make it something of relevance.  Winter storms and throwing Daschle "under the bus" do not quite make the grade.

That's right Owner, sometimes I forget!
He is a mere mortal, like everyone else.

He is allowed to make mistakes, like every single other President has done!

...oh, i can see the problem. Cory, i know this is a new thing and you may have overlooked it. It's called, "holding your hand up when you make a mistake". Yes, i know.....it's very novel. The last eight years haven't prepared you for such a concept. However, i believe it's actually a traditional thing for presidents to do....it's sometimes referred to as 'the buck stops here'. Unlike the last eight years when the mantra was 'the buck stops there....or there...or Iraq'.

Coldwarrior57 -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 12:13:24 PM)

I dont see how people can say he "threw dasshole under the bus".
Perhaps I am blind but , he (O) said it was his fault.

I know you won't believe me..but I don't think Obama had to hold up his hand and have the buck stop with him on Daschle.  It really is an indictment of his ego ridden staff who think they can and have, in fact, conquered the world...but don't understand vetting in a big boys game.  Daschle is also a smart enough guy and should have warned the President about his tax problems.

On the surface, Obama nominated a guy who was Senate Majority Leader, is an expert at working the Hill, and an expert in Healthcare...although his "lobby affiliations" did raise another question.  Obama is going to have enough reasons to raise his hands but a public relations photo op showing how "he can take it" falls on deaf ears with me as unecessary self deprecation.

maybemaybenot -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 1:29:26 PM)

corey:

President Obama and I have very little in common, ideologicaly, if anything. I expect to be displeased with many things he does. And I will continue to be vocal in my displeasure.  BUT:

If I am going to hold him up and criticize him, which I have, when he  pulls a few boners < ala Geitner and Daschle>, I also have to tip my hat to him when he takes responsibility for his poor decisions. I am fully cognizant of the fact that not everything he does is going to be bad, he is going to have successes, he is going to make some good decisions. Despite my differences with him, I will give kudos when he takes the high road and when he does things that are in sync with my own ideology.

I agree with Sanity, I am not so sure his reasons for the mea culpa were completely pure, but he did the right thing. No matter the reasons why. I, myself, have apologized or said such and such decesion was a mistake, when in my heart, I did not fully believe it. But I took reponsiblity for the decision.

Just some food for thought.

Well, the IRS audited Daschle in 2006 and found no problems. It wasn't until  last Novembe-rish, when Obama said he wanted Daschle on his team, that Mr. Daschle claims he remembered that he forgot to mention the limo and driver he didn't claim and other income he " forgot " to report.

I love this old campaign ad of Dachle's.

corysub -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 2:32:30 PM)

I see our point...but I also don't blame him for everything...A President can't be involved in vetting his cabinet and the 8,000 political jobs the White House is filling with over 300,000 applicants.  He has to have some time to run the country too and think a bit...  I'll sure give him blame when he does something silly..like the cap on executive incomes at financial institutions..but I addressed that on another thread.   Take care... cory

I'm kinda digging this new administration way more than I thought I ever would. This is like shooting fish in a barrel. You just know that Dubya is relaxing with a cold beer back in Texas laughing his ass off.

maybemaybenot -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 2:58:14 PM)

Evility:

I suspect that was a major catalyst in his removing his name. That ad was saturating all the news shows, on both sides and even the most liberal newspapers reported on it and would not support Mr. Daschle's nomination. The Obama vetting team must have been swallowing their own vomit when that was being played. I could be wrong, but I am guessing they were not aware of that ad.

I do not expect any leader or elected representative to be perfect or flawless in their decision making.  But this is the first time some of this stature has admitted making a mistake publically in a long, long time.  Part of learning is being able to learn from your mistakes.  Good for President Obama.

DedicatedDom40 -> RE: Obama does the right thing (2/4/2009 7:10:51 PM)

Obama will have a couple more hurdles to get over in the coming weeks. The stimulus bill was simply throwing money at a problem and hoping enough of it sticks to the wall, and that was stupid.  The list of projects was a "lefty spending wet dream" crafted by democrats way before Obama even won the election, with no analysis as to how and why it would actually stimulate the economy. That doesnt sit too well with the crossover voters who previously voted republican but voted Obama this time.  Also, he will see backlash from his base for stuffing Commerce with lots of pro-Nafta, pro-outsourcing leadership heads.  Both Rahm Emanuel and Judd Gregg are big Nafta supporters, so other than some lame attempt right out of the gate to throw pork at a wall, there's not much hope and change pending on the job front from the working class base that voted him in.  He'll have to answer to that. This country needs a serious discussion on Nafta, in terms of what it has provided and what it has cost this nation. That conversation never happens.
