Having just gotten some new shop toys and a great deal on some furniture-grade mahogony, I am in the process of designing and building some furniture/toys.

The major item I wish to build first is a wooden horse/pony. If anyone on here is from the SE, they may remember my fondness for making things both modular and multi-functional. What I want to do is have it with a box frame up on legs, with a section on top angling up to a rail (less than 2" wide) that can accomodate any number of plugs and other attachments, in addition to just being a place to sit someone. One of those attachments will be an upper piece that comes up to a sharper edge...

The question I have is, what should the angle of the hypothetical triangle (created by running the lines of the slope up to intersection) be? I have seen different angles used, and 45, while easy to do, can present problems both in terms of the stretch/spread and it can keep the person from fully engaging the rail or attachments. 30 seems to be optimal, but just wondered if anyone here had any experience or suggestions. Also, less than 30 seems to problematic in that it can cause damage from too much engagement.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

I delight in building toys also, but I haven't made a horse yet. Too much engagement? Even possible?

Just limit the size of the toy engaged...

I'd be delighted to see your design when it is complete, or even in progress!

Will be glad to share. The too much engagement can happen with the "edgier" top, in that it can cause flesh, nerve, or even bone damage if the angle is too steep. What I may do is work it out using a cardboard model to double check a few things...

Try making one out of cheap 2 x 6 first. You can pick up culls from Home Depot for less the a buck a piece and play with those.

Try a variant of Sartans bench/horse.

Maybe Im miss reading this but the ones Ive used the angle is in many respects irrelevant, because the top edge that makes contact is flat. And should'nt be and narrower that half an inch. The angled sides are mearly such to prevent them scraping the inner thigh. By making the top wider or thinner you vary the pain/numbing effects. Hope that assists you.
