aravain -> So I started reading Tarot again... (2/4/2009 4:25:07 PM)

Heh, I got some interesting spreads tonight that complimented each other. It was like having a conversation with two old friends (I used both of my decks)that I haven't seen in a while. Very rewarding advice.

It occurred to me that others have said that they won't read Tarot spreads for themselves, while still others won't read them for friends, and even *others*  (on another site I frequent) won't read them for anyone BUT their self. I'm interested to hear others' "methods" for tarot reading, and their various mythologies/dogmas regarding it (if there are any at all).

Do others (regularly) use multiple decks (either together or separated for the same topics? Why or Why not?

What are your beliefs about tarot (either pro or con) and your thoughts on the type of divination and what it does/predicts (if anything at all)?

I'll update with my in another post to this thread since I accidentally posted this >.< That way people will know it's done

EDIT Ok, Done... Sorry about that >.>

So to answer my own questions!

I'll read for almost anyone who asks. I don't like the idea of being 'paid' for it (though I was, once, just a few coins), but my philosophy and method of reading Tarot is a bit different, so I don't mind reading for those that I know well (in fact I find it easier to stimulate the critical thinking within them, since I know them better).

I have a very laissez-faire approach to Tarot. In my methods, it's typically the 'seeker' (the person who's being read for) who *actually* reads the cards, while I prompt them with questions, maybe a quick explanation of symbolism if they don't understand it, or at the very least asking them what the symbol means to them. I don't really 'handle' the cards, except to lay the spread (unless I'm reading for myself), and the real only active role I take is if I feel a pull between certain cards (which happens more often than I care to admit. Usually I consider it more successful if the 'seeker' feels the pull). As the practicitioner I'm there to facilitate the reading, not lead it (again, unless I'm reading for myself).

It's my beliefs that it's very much influenced by the subconcious (regardless of if you believe it's a 'psychic' subconcious or not) and I'm very strict about the types of shuffling (it must be contact-only, for instance) to help facilitate it. While they shuffle I try to distract them from the activity by talking, sometimes leading a short visualization. The belief in the effect of THEIR subconcious is part of the reason for my 'hands-off' approach... because (effectively) I'm not the reader (unless I am [:D]).

I only have two decks (though as I've said I'm looking to expand a bit more) but I won't use them together. Usually, when reading for myself, however, I will ask the same question/query and do a spread using first one set, then the same spread with the other after I'm done reading the first. I've been told that I couldn't possibly find similar results, and yet I usually do (sometimes one expounding on the other, such as what happened today). I do this, mostly, because of the different symbols in my decks (one is more 'gothic' than the other).

I don't have hardcore beliefs or mythologies about Tarot, myself. I like having a fluid attitude about it, though at one point I was very hard-core with methods and beliefs and such.

I think it's a bunch of cards with goofy pictures on them.  Just like ouija boards, crystal balls, bubbling cauldrons, magic (for the pretentious; Magick, majik, or what ever goofy way you misspell it [:D]), potions, spirit conjuring, and other hocus pocus.....it's theatrical nonsense.  Remember you did ask.

aravain -> RE: So I started reading Tarot again... (2/4/2009 5:32:03 PM)

Yeah, I did :)

I don't exactly know if I'm a skeptic or still consider myself a witch, personally. I know that I believe in force of will *shrug* I'm not sure if I'd really call it 'magick' anymore. I also believe in a whole bunch of other, generally pagany things XD

For those who believe: Tarot, or any divination, can be a great meditative tool to help you look at your life and the lives around you. More of a mirror than any kind of fortune telling thing, really, but very useful.

I have an old deck that I scrounge out once every few years myself. Maybe it's time I dig it out again....

To the OP.  Pretty much what she said.  I don't work with cards, but I believe all the methodologies are making the same sort of connection (whatever that may be).

I will add that I don't do readings for "free."  I want something.  It could be as simple as the favor asked in the right way, to the $50 I bucks I state as a price when they ask too casually.  I need to believe it isn't a dumb game to them.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: So I started reading Tarot again... (2/4/2009 6:38:24 PM)

For those of you looking for a bargain, I will read tea leaves for twenty-five bucks a pop.  Yes of course, they are magical tea leaves.  A leprechaun gave them to me in the forest behind my house after I ate some mystical mushrooms last summer.

Really? No way! Did you find the pot at the end of the rainbow, too?

Lynnxz -> RE: So I started reading Tarot again... (2/4/2009 6:45:10 PM)

Dude, if a little green man gave me a bunch of dried leaves... pretty sure the first thing I'd do with them wouldn't be to dump them in a tea pot.

Juuuust saying. [:D]

Now don't be silly.  Leprechans keep their gold in a bank run by Genies.  He was sitting on a stump with a beaver and some smurfs.  The beaver was wearing a licorice turban and the smurfs were singing Mighty Quinn.

Good response! Now all I gotta do is googlemap the address of this amazing bank, cuz damn, the overdraft charges where I'm at are killing me!

The I Ching is more useful.

Oh well, maybe you can at least pop open a cold American brew.

I still, more or less, think like this. I qualify my statement because I think that, on a deeper level, Tarot?Astrology/I Ching/Runes, etc. are a tool much like the Rorschach cards are a tool, for digging down into a person's psyche.

I'm still examing my beliefs.
